Motorcyclist who was reported missing found dead in Clarington, Ont., police say

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Doug Ives Durham police say a motorcyclist who was found dead on the side of a Clarington, Ont. roadway Tuesday afternoon was reported missing earlier in the day. In a news release issued Wednesday, police said officers located an unresponsive man near Concession Road 6 and Vickers Road, northeast of Orono, Ont., at 1:20 p.m. Investigators said they believe the man was driving his motorcycle east on Concession Road 6, when he crossed into the westbound lanes and went into a ditch, where he was ejected. The man was reported missing earlier in the day by his family, police said. Police said, at this time, they believe the incident was caused by a medical episode. The 47-year-old motorcyclist has not been identified.

Father and 14-year-old son charged after Orono mosque vandalized, antisemitic pamphlets placed at Bowmanville store

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Doug Ives A man and his 14-year-old son have been charged after allegedly placing antisemitic pamphlets at a Canadian Tire in Bowmanville in January and vandalizing a mosque in Orono last month. Durham Regional Police said the first incident occurred on the afternoon of Jan. 30 at a Canadian Tire store on Green Road. An unknown man entered the store and was caught on camera putting antisemitic pamphlets throughout the building, police said. Employees discovered the pamphlets and reported them to the police. Meanwhile, on the evening of May 24, police were called to a mosque at 111 Church Street North after several vehicles and the front door were vandalized. As a result of their investigation, police executed two search warrants at a home in Orono on Monday and arrested two people without incident. Police said they also seized several items. One suspect, a 34-year-old man, has been charged with mischief to property while his teenage son is facing a charge of mischief relating to religious property. Police said the two were released on an undertaking. 'We recognize the significant impact these incidents have had on our community, particularly among members of the Jewish and Muslim communities,' Durham police said in a news release on Tuesday. 'Acts that target or instill fear in any group are unacceptable and are taken very seriously. We remain committed to ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of everyone in our community.' Father, son charged after alleged hate-motivated incidents east of Toronto
Police say a father and his 14-year-old son have been arrested and charged after an investigation into hate-motivated incidents east of Toronto. Durham Regional Police say a male entered a Canadian Tire store in Bowmanville, Ont., on Jan. 30, and placed antisemitic pamphlets in various places. Officers were also called on May 24 to a mosque in Orono, Ont., where several vehicles and the front door were vandalized. Police say they executed two search warrants on Monday at a residence in Orono, where two males were arrested and several items were seized. A 34-year-old man from Clarington has been charged with mischief to property and a 14-year-old boy from Clarington has been charged with mischief relating to religious property.

‘Deep concern and distress': Police investigating after 7 vehicles were vandalized at mosque
Durham police are investigating what they describe as a 'hate-motivated incident' after seven vehicles and the front door of a mosque in Orono Ont. were vandalized late Saturday night. In a post to social media, officials say officers were called to 111 Church St. North at around 10:30 p.m. for reports of damage to vehicles parked outside the mosque. Police say they are working closely with community leaders and have urged anyone with dashcam, cellphone, or surveillance footage from the area to come forward. 'We understand the fear and anxiety such events can create,' police wrote in a statement, adding that they remain committed to ensuring the safety of all residents. The investigation is ongoing but police are asking anyone with information to contact Det. Const. Chesson of the East Division Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520 at ext. 1613.
