Ricketts gets early ads from group tied to Senate GOP in potential Osborn race
U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., speaks to supporters during his campaign kickoff event Aug. 23, 2023, in Omaha. (Aaron Sanderford/Nebraska Examiner) OMAHA — U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., running for his first full six-year term in 2026, is getting early outside ad support from Senate Republicans that shows he and the party are taking a potential matchup with registered nonpartisan labor leader Dan Osborn seriously. One Nation, the best-known advertising arm of the Senate GOP's Super PAC, the Senate Leadership Fund, is announcing a seven-figure digital ad buy on Ricketts' behalf Friday, the Examiner has learned. It's starting with a positive ad. Chris Gustafson, communications director for One Nation, touted Ricketts' 'long and trusted record' of results in Lincoln and Washington, D.C., where Ricketts is already making waves as a major fundraiser for the Senate GOP. The online ad unveiled this week reminds Republicans and others about the Legislature's push while he was governor to remove income taxes from Social Security income and of his federal push to do the same with President Donald Trump. It's noteworthy in part because it appears aimed at shoring up Ricketts on Social Security, because Osborn, who made Ricketts' senior colleague, U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., sweat in a close 2024 race is mulling a 2026 bid against Ricketts. Osborn relentlessly hammered Fischer and congressional Republicans for doing too little to protect Social Security and has said he would make sure that the benefits were protected from potential budget cuts. He campaigned on the issue. It's also interesting because Fischer drew criticism from national Republicans for waiting too late in the race to spend money attacking and defining Osborn. She eventually sought help from Senate Republicans to beat him back with outside ads. Gustafson and other people familiar with the race agreed that Senate Republicans are willing to be more aggressive sooner in the Osborn race than is typical for a GOP-led state. Political observers saw it as a sign to donors to get and stay engaged. Osborn has shown the ability to raise funds, having raised and spent nearly $15 million against Fischer, according to But Ricketts is a prolific fundraiser, too. His family owns the Chicago Cubs, and his political team has a cut-throat reputation. Ricketts' campaign team had no immediate comment on the ad buy. Osborn is still building his campaign apparatus. But when Fischer needed outside help, Osborn said it was a sign the millionaires and billionaires were paying attention. Fischer and many Republicans have criticized Osborn for taking money from Senate Democrats and major Democratic donors funded through normal PACs and dark money groups — and then calling himself nonpartisan. She called him a Democrat in sheep's clothing. Osborn has denied being part of either party, pointing to his registration and willingness to hear people out. He has said he's more focused on the needs of working people than their political beliefs. Ricketts is known for cutting spending and taxes at the state level. He focused much of his time as governor on remaking processes for applying for government help to boost response times. Critics have said he slashed too much. In Congress, he has been a reliable Republican vote. He has said his goal is to bring the same approach he brought to Lincoln to Washington, D.C., saying that the federal government could be run leaner and more efficiently. In November, Ricketts won a special election to the final two years of former Republican U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse's term after Gov. Jim Pillen appointed him to the office initially. He agreed to run again as part of the appointment process. SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX

Castle Air Museum hosts Open Cockpit Day on May 24. Here's what you need to know
Open Cockpit Day, an opportunity to learn about the history of U.S. aviation, will be held at Castle Air Museum in Atwater on May 24. Attendees can get an up-close view of more than 30 aircraft, some of which saw military use from before World War II to modern day. New this year to the museum is the F-4S Phantom II 'Black Bunny,' a variant of the McDonnell Douglas F-4S Phantom II. First flown in 1969, this aircraft was used for night testing and evaluations of its weapons, radar and navigation systems at the Naval Air Station in Point Mugu. Painted primarily black, the aircraft has the Playboy magazine emblem on its tail in white. The iconic bunny with a bow tie makes the plane kind of part of American pop culture said Joe Pruzzo, executive director of Castle Air Museum. 'You know that's going to receive a lot of attention.' The aircraft will be at the northeast end of the museum. In 2016, the museum inquired with the Navy about obtaining the F-4S variant. It received approval and paid a one-time fee of $65,000 for its use. Pruzzo said it took seven years for the museum to raise the money and for the Navy to demilitarize the plane and prepare it for public view. Admiral Merchant, a Minnesota-based trucking company, picked up the plane at Pima Air & Space in Tuscon, Ariz., in July 2023. Four highway patrol cruisers surrounded the truck during its drive from Arizona to Atwater. The aircraft is being refreshed with a paint job at the museum's enclosed restoration facility after being at Davis-Monthan Air Force base in Arizona for more than 30 years. Pruzzo said the museum can keep the aircraft as long as it's kept in stable condition. Opened to the public in 1981, Castle Air Museum is a nonprofit organization that focuses on preserving military aviation heritage for future generations. The museum's first Open Cockpit Day was in 1996 with a small gathering. From that point, the number of attendees grew with the help of on-air and print media promotion. At one point, upward of 4,500 people attended the event. Attendees 'come from the Bay Area, the Monterey Bay area, Sacramento, Fresno, Visalia, and, of course, up in the foothills in the west Valley,' Pruzzo said. 'It's a well-attended event.' Throughout the museum, volunteers help in various ways. Among them is Alvin Osborn, who served in the Air Force for 26 years. Osborn started in the Reserve Officer Training Corps and later took pilot training. His most memorable moment in the Air Force was being involved in Operation Arc Light, he said. In June 1965, the Air Force deployed a Boeing B-52 Stratofortress to strike locations in South Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and southern North Vietnam. Osborn recalled using the bomber to deliver conventional bombs to Southeast Asia for several years. 'It was a challenge for maintenance to keep the airplanes up. It was a challenge for the crews to adapt to that schedule,' he said. Now as a volunteer, Osborn informs newer generations about the importance of these aircraft and the roles they have served. 'The museum is about the only way that we have now to educate those generations, young and old, that either come here to this country that don't understand how we got where we are or that grew up in this country but were never taught that. And so we find the opportunity here to do that, to teach [and] explain,' Osborn said. Open Cockpit Day will begin at 9 a.m. Attendees can purchase tickets in front of the museum for $25. For an additional fee, helicopter rides are available. There will be two entry gates, the first near the front parking lot and the other close to the Castle Air Family Health Centers' parking lot.

Weight loss, diabetes drugs can cause mood changes: What to know about behavioral side effects
GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), medications that help control type 2 diabetes and obesity, can have a profound impact on physical wellness – but what about mental health? Some examples of these medications include semaglutides, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, and liraglutide, like Victoza and Saxenda. Various studies have pointed toward GLP-1 RAs causing mental health complications, such as anxiety and depression. Weight-loss Drugs' Impact On Cancer Risk Revealed In New Study The National Institutes of Health (NIH) published research in June 2024 that considered the correlation between semaglutide therapy and "exacerbating mood disturbances." The study highlighted the association of negative mood changes in patients with type 2 diabetes with a history of depression, warning healthcare providers to be aware of this "potential risk." Read On The Fox News App But a more recent study, published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, suggested that these mood changes were linked to genetic variations across diverse populations and ancestries within the U.K. Biobank. While GLP-1 RA variants had "consistent cardiometabolic effects" across all groups, the researchers said the negative impacts on mental health were "more varied," concluding that any behavioral changes are "likely not acting directly through [the medications]." Semaglutide Found To Have Shocking Benefit For Liver Disease Patients In New Study Dr. Brett Osborn, a Florida neurosurgeon who often prescribes GLP-1 RAs to his patients, believes that there is "no consistent causal relationship" between these medications and mental illness. "Researchers assayed genetic markers across almost half a million people from different backgrounds in search of a link between the gene behind GLP-1 receptors and mental health problems like depression, anxiety or suicidal ideation — and they didn't find it," he summarized. People who are obese or battling type 2 diabetes are "often already depressed" without the medication, the doctor pointed out. "These conditions take a toll – physically, emotionally and socially," he said. "So, yes, a large portion of patients starting GLP-1 drugs are already dealing with mental health struggles. But that's not because of the drug — that's because of the disease." Here's Why Belly Fat Is More Common As We Age, And 3 Ways To Prevent It Once these individuals begin dropping weight, blood sugar stabilizes and energy improves, which usually lifts their mood as well. "GLP-1 drugs help people reclaim their health," Osborn noted. "They reduce inflammation. They lower blood sugar. They shrink waistlines." "And when people look and feel better, when their bodies finally start working for them instead of against them, they often smile more, not less." Dr. Muhammad Ghanem, a bariatric surgeon at Orlando Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery Institute, shared in a separate interview with Fox News Digital that while some of his patients have reported mood changes, others "don't have that at all." First Glp-1 Pill For Weight Loss, Diabetes Shows Success In Late-phase Trial "Depression or mood changes are very common regardless, especially nowadays, and so it's hard to [determine] whether this is related to the GLP-1 agonist medications, or whether it just happens to be that they started suffering from these after they started that medication," he said. "It's really hard to tell whether it's a personality change that can happen because of weight loss or if it's a side effect because of mood changes," he added. "I don't think we have enough data to reach that conclusion yet." Patients who lose weight with GLP-1 RAs can experience a "big boost" in confidence, as well as a change in personality and even relationships, according to Ghanem. "It really depends on the person and the support system they have," he said. "You need proper, randomized controlled trials to reach a conclusion, and better studies to determine whether this is related to the medication itself or just weight loss." For those who are interested in these medications or are experiencing mood changes while taking them, the surgeon stressed the importance of keeping in close contact with medical providers. "Just like any other medication, they can have potential side effects," he said. Ghanem recommended seeking out professionals and practices who take a "holistic approach" to weight loss, offering mental health support in addition to medication. Dr. Brunilda Nazario, MD, chief physician editor of medical affairs at WebMD, told Fox News Digital that "obesity is complicated." "Obesity specialists … are cautiously excited about how well these drugs work," she said. Click Here To Sign Up For Our Health Newsletter "With current studies showing conflicting results on mood disorders and the use of GLP-1 drugs, it's important for all doctors who prescribe these drugs to be aware and check the patient's history before prescribing [them]." Nazario stressed that it's "vital" for GLP-1 RA users to listen to their bodies, urging them to pay attention to their feelings and know the symptoms of mood disorders. "Don't be afraid to ask for help if you feel something is not right — your health depends on it," he added. For more Health articles, visit Nazario noted that GLP-1 RAs can affect mood in many different ways. "They are not all negative — they have the potential to improve mood as well," she said. "Just seeing great results can boost self-esteem, confidence and body image."Original article source: Weight loss, diabetes drugs can cause mood changes: What to know about behavioral side effects

Willamette Valley Vineyards appoints new CEO
US-based Willamette Valley Vineyards has appointed Michael Osborn, the founder of as its new CEO. The appointment follows the company's founder Jim Bernau's decision in January to step back from the CEO role while continuing as president and chairperson, as part of a planned succession strategy. In a statement published yesterday (12 May), the Oregon-headquartered winery said the appointment is effective immediately. Bernau said: "As the wine market continues to evolve, we need the added horsepower of a new CEO grounded in the industry's business side to accelerate our momentum. 'Mike brings visionary leadership, a deep connection to Oregon, and the sales and marketing experience to invigorate our brand with distributors, retailers, and restaurants across the country and globally.' Osborn founded in Portland and built it into a 'leading online wine retailer' in the US over the past 27 years, Willamette Valley Vineyards said. In the statement, Osborn said he will 'work with the team to elevate the winery's national and global presence while remaining rooted in the people and places that make Oregon wine distinctive'. Founded in 1983, Willamette Valley Vineyards has grown from 15 acres of vines in the Salem Hills of Oregon to more than 1,000, producing over 260,000 cases annually. It manages several estates, including the flagship vineyard in the Salem Hills, Domaine Willamette in the Dundee Hills, Tualatin Estate near Forest Grove and Elton Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills. The winery employs more than 350 staff, including more than 40 managers overseeing operations across ten tasting rooms in Oregon, south-west Washington and California. For the year ending 31 December, Willamette Valley Vineyards posted net sales of $39.8m, up 1.7% from the previous year. The company's net loss narrowed by 90.2% to $117,894 compared to the prior year. It attributed this improvement to higher gross profit, driven by increased sales revenue and improved margins, though higher interest expenses in 2024 partially offset these gains. Gross profit increased by 7.3% year-over-year, reaching $24.2m. "Willamette Valley Vineyards appoints new CEO" was originally created and published by Just Drinks, a GlobalData owned brand.
