Mexico issues warning to citizens about traveling to Florida

By A diplomat from Mexico cautioned residents of the country to reconsider traveling to Florida after the state opened a migrant detention center known as Alligator Alcatraz. Juan Sabines, Mexico's consul in Orlando, issued the dire warning this week in an interview with Talking Points Memo. 'They should take precautions or not come to Florida,' Sabines said. 'You should take extreme precautions when you come to Florida.' Sabines explained that any visitors from Mexico should carry their documents with them at all times and make sure they rent cars from reputable businesses. 'They will detain you here for anything,' he said. 'It's a state that has more risks than other states… including for people with visas,' the diplomat added. Sabines' alarm stems from the detention of Mexican siblings Carlos González, 26, and Óscar González, 30, who were arrested July 7 following a traffic stop. Carlos, who was in the country legally on an active tourism visa, was stopped by a state trooper while driving a car that had tinted windows. He did not have the vehicle's registration on him. Óscar, who is married to a U.S. citizen, arrived on the scene to present the documents and was also arrested. 'And why? I don't know. We don't understand the reason they are still in prison. … It's not the right way to do things.' The consul's comments came as Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called on the Trump administration to release each of the detainees being held at Alligator Alcatraz and to send them back to Mexico. Detainees at Alligator Alcatraz have described harsh conditions at the facility, including dozens of inmates being corralled in cages and disorienting conditions. A Cuban migrant said the lights stay on around the clock, leaving him clueless as to the time of day, and that inmates are only permitted to shower every three to four days.

A diplomat from Mexico cautioned residents of the country to reconsider traveling to Florida after the state opened a migrant detention center known as Alligator Alcatraz. US Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told Reuters that Carlos had not registered his vehicle with the state and had accumulated 212 violations for not paying tolls. The lawyer assigned to represent the brothers has not been permitted to see them since they were sent to Alligator Alcatraz, which is located in Ochopee in the Florida Everglades. Sabines slammed the Trump administration for not providing the González brothers and other detainees 'the right to a fair trial.' 'The two of them don't want to stay in the U.S. These men already want to go to Mexico, but they won't let them,' he told Talking Points Memo. 'And why? I don't know. We don't understand the reason they are still in prison. … It's not the right way to do things.' The consul's comments came as Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called on the Trump administration to release each of the detainees being held at Alligator Alcatraz and to send them back to Mexico. 'The consulate is checking whether there are human rights violations,' Sheinbaum said. 'If so, the protocol that must be followed is followed. But what we have requested is that they be deported immediately, so we can repatriate them.' A total of 73,533 people - including 67,008 Mexican nationals - have been returned to Mexico since Trump took on January 20. An Argentine migrant described the center's conditions as unsanitary while citing extreme temperature swings, mosquito infestations, and a lack of privacy. A spokesperson for the Florida Department of Emergency Management defended the new facility, claiming the allegations against the center are 'completely false.'

Padres release Oscar Gonzalez

The San Diego Padres have given outfielder Oscar Gonzalez his unconditional release to allow him to pursue a job in Japan with the Nippon Professional Baseball organization, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic. With the designation of Yuli Gurriel, the trade of Connor Joe to the Reds and the release of Gonzalez, the Padres have 37 players on their 40-man roster. Advertisement Gonzalez provided 61 plate appearances while hitting .220/.246/.237 with the Padres during the absence of both Jackson Merrill and Brandon Lockridge to injury. His 52% chase rate and 27% whiff rate along with his 21% K rate made it unlikely he would see time with the Padres again except in case of injury. The team is now even thinner in left field options and almost certainly will need to trade for, or sign a free agent, for more depth for the outfield. It is also likely they will entertain the prospect of replacing Jason Heyward and his sub-par offense for the regular left field job. There is plenty of roster space to add the needed help. Padres activate 2B Jake Cronenworth (rib) from IL

May 9 - San Diego Padres standout second baseman Jake Cronenworth was activated off the 10-day injured list prior to Friday night's road game against the Colorado Rockies. Cronenworth missed the past four-plus weeks due to a fractured rib. Cronenworth was hit by a pitch on April 6 during a contest against the Chicago Cubs and attempted to play through the injury. Two days later, he exited a game against the Athletics due to increasing pain in the ribs. San Diego opened a roster spot by optioning outfielder Oscar Gonzalez to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday. Cronenworth, 31, batted .257 with a .409 on-base percentage in nine games this season before going on the IL. He has two homers and five RBIs. The two-time All-Star is in his sixth season with the Padres. He is batting .247 with 71 homers and 315 RBIs in 658 career games. Despite lengthy absences of Cronenworth and All-Star center fielder Jackson Merrill, the Padres possess a 23-13 record that rates fourth in the majors. Merrill returned to the lineup Tuesday after missing 24 games with a right hamstring injury. --Field Level Media
