Four injured after car ploughs into crowd celebrating PSG Champions League win in Grenoble with woman fighting for life
FOUR people have been seriously injured after a car ploughed into a crowd celebrating PSG's win in France. A young woman was left fighting for life after the "high-speed" car smashed into the group of people in Grenoble. The driver of the car allegedly "lost control" of his vehicle before hitting the four people - understood to be a family. Footage from the aftermath shows emergency services working on the scene while crowds gathered on pavements. The driver was allegedly attempting to perform a controlled stunt but lost control of his vehicle, local news outlet Ouest France reports. Local media also reported that the driver surrendered to cops and now remains in police custody. Jubilant PSG supporters started celebrating their first ever Champions League trophy midway through the clash with Inter Milan after easily seeing off the Italian side. Thousands of supporters gathered across the city on Saturday night to watch the game as many packed into the Parc des Princes stadium. But disturbing footage online showed how during the final Paris was plunged into trouble. Dozens of fires broke out across the capital with several intense safety operations launched by French firefighters. Video appeared to show bikes and mattresses set alight near to the football ground with thick black smoke billowing through the night sky. .

Lighting up on a French beach will cost more than £100 under national smoking ban
Tourists looking to light up on the beaches of the French Riviera this summer face being slapped with a fine after nationwide ban on smoking in most outdoor areas comes into force. France is outlawing smoking on all beaches and other public outdoor spaces, and introducing a hefty penalty for those who do not comply with the new rules when they take effect within weeks. 'Tobacco must disappear where there are children,' French health minister Catherine Vautrin told French newspaper Ouest-France on Thursday. "From July 1, beaches, public parks and gardens, school grounds, bus shelters, and sports facilities will be smoke-free throughout France." Those who don't comply with the ban face a fine of €135 (£113.60), Ms Vautrin said, adding that the freedom to smoke "ends where children's right to breathe clean air begins." The ban does not include cafe or bar terraces, and will not apply to e-cigarettes, but Ms Vautrin said she was not ruling out making any changes in the future. One in four French people aged over 15 (25.3 per cent) smoked on a daily basis as of 2021, according to the most recently available figures from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The President of the Alliance Against Tobacco Loic Josseran welcomed the ban, telling Le Parisien he believed the new rules would help 'gradually remove cigarettes from our environment'. "We urgently need to change the image of tobacco, which costs French society €156 billion a year and is a health and environmental disaster,' he said. Lung specialist Frederic Le Guillou told Le Parisien that the ban on smoking in public spaces was about encouraging people to stop smoking. 'The idea is not to make smokers feel guilty, because smoking is a real addiction, but the fact is that the more constraints we put on them, the more it encourages them to stop,' he said. The national ban follows bans already enacted by some local authorities around France. Smoking was banned in Saint-Malo in Brittany in 2015, it was banned in 2018 in Ouistreham in Calvados, Le Figaro reports. The mayor of Saint-Malo, Gilles Lurton, told the publication officials had never had to issue many fines. 'We advocate education above all,' he said. On the Cote d'Azur in the south-east of France, about 10 towns have also already banned smoking on certain beaches, including Menton, Saint-Laurent-du-Var , Villefranche-sur-Mer, and Cannes. Cannes Lord Mayor David Lisnard told Le Figaro: "We made this choice almost ten years ago for reasons of hygiene, the environment and also public health.'

France to ban smoking in public places including at beaches and parks
France will ban smoking in all outdoors areas frequented by children, including beaches, in parks and outside schools from July. The ban, which follows similar measures across an increasingly smoking-averse Europe, will exempt cafe outdoor terraces and will not apply to electronic cigarettes, the government said. "Where there are children, tobacco must disappear," Health and Families Minister Catherine Vautrin said in an interview with the Ouest France newspaper late on Thursday. "From July 1, beaches, public parks and gardens, school areas, bus shelters, and sports facilities will be smoke-free throughout France. Smoking will therefore be prohibited there, to protect our children." Vautrin said smoking kills around 200 people every day in France. Smoking in France is at historic lows, according to a report published this month by the French Observatory for Drugs and Addictive Trends. It found that just under a quarter of people aged 18-75 smoked daily, the lowest since it began keeping records in the late 1990s. Some Spanish regions have banned smoking on beaches, while Sweden has outlawed smoking in outdoor restaurant terraces, bus stops, train platforms and schoolyards since 2019. The UK announced a similar smoking ban last year. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill was introduced to parliament in November 2024, which proposed a ban on smoking outside schools, hospitals and playgrounds. The bill also includes some of the world's strictest anti-smoking rules, including banning children born since 2009 from ever being able to buy cigarettes. At the time, Health Secretary Wes Streeting said: 'Unless we act to help people stay healthy, the rising tide of ill health in our society threatens to overwhelm and bankrupt our NHS. Prevention is better than cure. 'This Government is taking bold action to create the first smoke-free generation, clamp down on kids getting hooked on nicotine through vapes, and protect children and vulnerable people from the harms of secondhand smoke. 'This historic legislation will save thousands of lives and protect the NHS. By building a healthy society, we will also help to build a healthy economy, with fewer people off work sick.'
