Rock Island Arsenal needs help setting out, picking up flags from graves

Memorial Day is fast approaching and every year, the Rock Island Arsenal puts flags on every gravestone in the cemetery there. Dan Baltisberger, administrative officer with the Rock Island Arsenal, spoke with Our Quad Cities News via Zoom to explain how people can help put out the flags. 'We put a flag on every headstone in the cemetery, which takes us about an hour to an hour and a half,' he said. 'That goes down on Thursday, the 22nd at 4 p.m. I always advise people to get here at least 15 to 20 minutes early. That allows time to walk up and beat the traffic a little bit. The earlier, the better, as far as that goes to get better parking. Please be patient, because we've already had meetings with the gate guards, and I think we're ready. The traffic should go very quick, and you do not need a visitor pass. Just your driver's license will suffice, so you do not need a visitor pass.' Baltisberger said that's good advice in general for adults visiting the Arsenal. 'We always advise anybody over the age of 18 to just have your driver's license with you. Typically, they will do the vetting for the driver, but we want everybody to come out, be able to volunteer. It's a great place. It's a great time of year, good weather, so we want to allow everybody to be out here and participate and take care of the vets.'The job is simple, and volunteers can work as much as they like. 'The flags are all bundled, and we have metal pokers. So typically, it's a two-man team, where one person will poke a hole and the other person will put the flag in the ground. You can do it by yourself. We have groups like the Boy Scouts come out, other groups like that, but you don't have to come with a group. You can come all by yourself, you can be matched up with somebody or you can just put out stuff yourself. You can go and put a couple out, or you can put 100 out. It's up to you.'He says volunteers are needed both to put the flags out and take them down. 'On Thursday, we always have had pretty good crowds for that, even back during COVID, when I first started working in '21, a lot of you know it was good turnouts. As far as tearing down, that is going to be on the Tuesday after Memorial Day. That will go down at 7:45 in the morning and then it's just the exact opposite. We pull the flags and we band them up in groups of 25 and we put them back in the totes for the next year.' Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate, even children. 'We welcome everybody; we want to instill that pride in our country, and for them to come out and see that and to ask questions, you know, 'why are we doing this?' There's not a whole lot of danger; we don't have mowing going on during that time. It is strictly the event, which is putting out the flags for our veterans.' Volunteers don't need to register before they arrive, he said. 'You just need to come up. You do not need to sign up. There's no pre-registration. There's none of that. We field calls. So, if you have questions, you can give us a call at 309-784-0000, so feel free to come out and join us. There are veterans' groups that will have hot dogs afterwards and water. I guess that's a little bit of an incentive. It's a good time and it's always a good turnout, and at the end of the day, we're taking care of those who took care of us.' WATCH: Heavy Rock Island, Davenport police presence after incident

At least one person was in custody after an incident Monday afternoon in the area of Howell Street and Rockingham Road, Davenport. Shortly before 2 p.m., the Our Quad Cities News crew saw two Rock Island squad cars head toward Davenport on the Centennial Bridge. Once our crew arrived, we saw technicians take prints from a Rock Island K9 Ford Explorer parked on the 200 block of South Howell Street. Around the corner, on the 1900 block of Dixwell Street, officers were at a house, where they told someone inside to 'Come out with your hands up.' Eventually, one person came out of the house, was handcuffed and placed in a squad car, then was transported from the scene. Police remained on the scene at 3 p.m. We will stay in contact with police to provide details about the incident as soon as they are available. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
