French actor Marion Cotillard and director Guillaume Canet announce split

French actress Marion Cotillard (right) and director Guillaume Canet pose during a photocall for the film "Blood Ties" presented Out of Competition at the 66th edition of the Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, on May 20, 2013.--AFP French movie star Marion Cotillard and director Guillaume Canet have separated after nearly two decades together with 'mutual respect', the star couple announced on Friday. 'After 18 years together, Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet have decided to separate by mutual agreement,' said a statement released by their representatives. 'This decision was made with mutual respect,' it added. Oscar winner Cotillard frequently collaborated on projects with Canet since their relationship began in 2007, including the 2010 comedy-drama 'Little White Lies' (Les Petits Mouchoirs). Cotillard, 49, and Canet, 52, who share two children together, said they hoped to avoid 'speculation, rumour, and misinterpretation' with the announcement. 'By being transparent through this statement, Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet also express their desire for their private lives, and especially that of their two children, to be respected,' the statement said. Cotillard, one of the best-known faces of French cinema, won the Best Actress Academy Award for her role as Edith Piaf in 'La Vie en Rose' in 2008. Canet, who is also an actor, is best known to international audiences for his role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in 2000's 'The Beach'.--AFP

Tom Cruise spotted on roof of London's BFI IMAX ahead of ‘Mission: Impossible' release

Superstar Tom Cruise was photographed on Sunday afternoon standing on the roof of the BFI IMAX building in London. The unexpected sighting comes just a day before he is set to receive the prestigious BFI Fellowship, the British Film Institute's highest honour, on Monday. The actor, in town for the event, appeared to take a moment away from formalities for the unanticipated stunt. The BFI IMAX is currently wrapped in a massive advertisement for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth installment in the long-running action franchise. While it's not confirmed whether Cruise's rooftop moment was part of a publicity stunt, sources close to the actor confirmed it was indeed him. His latest film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, hits theaters in the U.S. on May 23, with an earlier release in India on May 17. The film will also screen Out of Competition at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14, where Cruise and the cast are expected to attend. The upcoming film continues the story from Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023), with Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt. This time, Hunt is up against an artificial intelligence threat known as the Entity. The plot follows his race to retrieve a sunken Russian submarine that holds the key to defeating the AI. The cast includes returning stars Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Angela Bassett, and Henry Czerny.
