SF brings back free downtown concerts featuring Dirtybird and more

Free downtown concerts are coming back this summer. State of play: The concert series — a partnership with Another Planet Entertainment, the producer of Outside Lands Festival — will return to Embarcadero Plaza, Union Square and Civic Center Plaza. Zoom in: The first concert, slated for June 14 at Embarcadero Plaza, will mark the second annual Back 2 Baysics event and feature the city's homegrown electronic music label Dirtybird as host. The DJ line-up is yet to be announced. The big picture: Last year's shows, which included Dirtybird: Back 2 Baysics at Embarcadero Plaza, Portugal. The Man at Civic Center Plaza and Don Louis and Sophia Scott in Union Square, drew tens of thousands of attendees. The concert in Embarcadero Plaza alone nearly tripled foot traffic in the area relative to a typical Sunday. The initiative, a three-year agreement secured by former Mayor London Breed, is aimed at revitalizing the downtown economy and supporting local businesses as well as San Francisco's arts and culture scene.

Free concert series returns to downtown San Francisco this summer

A popular downtown concert series is returning for a second year as part of a broader push to revitalize the city's urban core through free public events and cultural programming, Mayor Daniel Lurie announced Friday, May 2. In partnership with Another Planet Entertainment, the promotion company behind the annual Outside Lands festival in Golden Gate Park, and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, the 2025 series will kick off June 14 at Embarcadero Plaza with the second annual Back 2 Baysics concert, featuring San Francisco electronic music label Dirtybird. The event follows a successful 2024 season that drew tens of thousands to Union Square, Civic Center Plaza and Embarcadero Plaza. 'Last year's shows brought thousands of people to our downtown, and we're building on that momentum,' said Mayor Lurie. 'Our arts and culture are helping to drive San Francisco's comeback, and this is a perfect example of that energy.' The concert series is part of a three-year agreement with Another Planet Entertainment, which also includes two to three ticketed concerts at the Polo Field the weekend following the Outside Lands Festival. 'Last year was such an incredible cross-section of the San Francisco community,' Bryan Duquette, a member of Another Planet Entertainment's core executive team, said in a statement. 'San Francisco feels alive right now!' The deal supports city parks and brings significant foot traffic downtown — last year's Embarcadero concert nearly tripled local attendance on a typical Sunday, according to the mayor's office. The full lineup of events will be announced at a later date. 'Events like these remind us that our public spaces are for everyone,' said Phil Ginsburg, head of the Recreation and Park Department. 'Our downtown plazas are vibrant, joyful places where people can dance, connect, and experience the magic of live music together.'

Chappell Roan's 'Hot to Go' Music Video Costume Sells for $89K in Benefit Auction for L.A. Wildfire Relief

A piece of Chappell Roan's wardrobe was the highest selling item in a benefit auction brimming with items for the pop culture-obsessed! The star's iconic 'Hot to Go' music video 'fit — a vintage sequined marching band unitard and strappy, knee-high boots — sold for a whopping $88,900 in Julien's Auctions' Give a Frock Auction. The auction house announced the winning bid — the highest of the entire auction! — on Tuesday, Feb. 25, following the conclusion of the event, which raised funds for Los Angeles wildfire relief. Ahead of the pop culture-centric benefit auction, the company estimated that glittering blue and gold unitard — which Roan, 27, also wore on stage at Outside Lands Festival last summer — and size 7 Jeffrey Campbell boots would go for $1,000 to $2,000, meaning it earned 88 times the lowest estimated selling price, and 44 times the highest. The sparkling, vintage ensemble — curated by Roan's stylist, Genesis Webb — was just one of the pieces she donated to the wildfire relief fundraiser. The purple set sold for $22,225 — over 22 times more than its estimated selling price of $1,000 — while the platforms raked in a grand total of $6,350. And Roan wasn't the only pop girly whose iconic pieces did numbers in the relief auction. Items worn by Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Hayley Williams, Olivia Rodrigo and the inventor of BRAT herself, Charli xcx, also sold for thousands. The iconic polka-dot co-ord Carpenter, 25, wore in her 'Taste' music video — Blondita's popular Gwen set — sold for $22,225, while the hooded Alaïa minidress she wore in her 'Please Please Please' music video (the pre-Dolly Parton version!) boasted a winning bid of $34,925. (An outfit Jenna Ortega wore in the 'Taste' video alongside the star also sold for $13,000.) Meanwhile, the Rodarte gown Rodrigo, 22, wore at the premiere of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes in 2023 fetched $10,160, and two outfits worn by Charli, 32 — a bridal-inspired ensemble and custom Gucci 'fit she wore during her Sweat Tour — went for $22,225 and $8,890 in the auction, respectively. Ear clips worn by Eilish, 23, fetched $5,715 in the auction, and two outfits worn by Paramore frontwoman Williams — one in the band's "This Is Why" music video and one for an opening performance at Taylor Swift's Eras Tour — raked in $16,250 and $13,000 for wildfire relief. In a statement shared after the auction, Martin Nolan, the executive director and co-founder of Julien's Auctions, said, 'We are thrilled with today's wildly successful auction and beyond grateful and overwhelmed by the support of all of the stars, who unified together to give us their most iconic frocks and pieces to rock for a good cause.'
