2025 Men's College World Series: Coastal Carolina pull off 7-4 win over Arizona
The 2025 Men's College World Series kicked off in full force on Friday, as No. 13 Coastal Carolina earned the first win of the tournament with a 7-4 victory over unseeded Arizona. The Chanticleers, who came into this tournament with the best record in Division 1, overcame a 4-4 tie with a few clutch doubles in the bottom of the eighth to keep their 24-game win streak alive. It was a quiet first inning for both teams. But in the second inning, Coastal Carolina had a huge opportunity, loading the bases off a muffed infield catch by Arizona pitcher Owen Kramkowski. Outfielder Wells Sykes took advantage of the situation, hitting a two-run RBI single to put the Chanticleers on the board first. Advertisement After a slow third inning, Arizona came alive at the top of the fourth, starting with shortstop Mason White getting a solo homer. Then, the Wildcats got two back-to-back doubles, sending catcher Adonys Guzman home to tie the game. Coastal Carolina was able to escape the inning without any further damage. And then, at the bottom of the fifth, the Chanticleers got a few players of their own on base. A well-hit single from right fielder Blagen Pado sent second baseman Blake Barthol home to take a 3-2 lead. Coastal Carolina is known for being hit by pitches — the team has been hit by an NCAA-leading 170 pitches this season. But in the sixth inning, it was Arizona who took advantage of getting hit: Chanticleers reliever Cameron Flukey, who came into the game after four innings, hit three batters in that inning alone, allowing the Wildcats to fill the bases and eventually get a game-tying run before getting an out. Then, a grounder from second baseman Garen Caulfield sent White home to give Arizona the 4-3 lead. But then, in the bottom of the sixth, Chanticleers catcher Caden Bodine hit in a game-tying run to bring things to 4-4. Advertisement The two teams stayed locked in a tie for the next two innings off some strong defensive play, with Flukey finally settling in to easily dispatch the Arizona offense. In the bottom of the eighth, with the Chanticleers sitting on two outs, it looked like the game would come down to the final inning. But Coastal Carolina's offense broke through with a series of doubles. It started with Sykes getting on second off a hit that landed right on the line; left fielder Sebastian Alexander then hit an RBI single to send Sykes home for a 5-4 lead. Another huge double from Barthol sent Alexander and Bodine, who was intentionally walked, home to give the Chanticleers a 7-4 lead heading into the ninth. Arizona wasn't quite done yet, as designated hitter Andrew Cain earned a double with some bold running and first baseman Tommy Splaine got a base hit. But a key double play ended the game and sent Coastal Carolina to the winners' bracket. Advertisement The Chanticleers will play the winner of Oregon St. vs. Louisville, while the Wildcats will try to survive against the loser of that matchup. The tournament is double-elimination, setting up a must-win game for Arizona. The men's College World Series has one of the most entertaining side plots of any of the NCAA championship: The Jell-O shot competition at Rocco's, where patrons compete annually to see which school's fans can eat the most Jell-O shot. LSU, who notoriously consumed 68,888 Jell-O shots in 2023, is off to an early lead, eating 943 shots during the first day of the CWS. However, Coastal Carolina and Murray State are also on a roll, consuming 836 and 805, respectively. All three schools are on pace to break LSU's 2023 record.

College World Series Preview: 3 things to know about the Arizona Wildcats The College World Series returns this week for the 75th anniversary of the CWS in Omaha. LSU baseball is headed to Omaha for the 20th time in program history. The Tigers will be joined by seven other programs looking to make a run at the national title. Just about every pocket of the country is represented in the field of eight. There's a heavy West Coast presence with Arizona, Oregon State, and UCLA. LSU and Arkansas represent the boot, while Murray State and Louisville represent Kentucky. From the Southeast, we have Coastal Carolina. We have a fresh field as none of these teams were in Omaha last year. A few schools are chasing their first national championship while programs like LSU and Arizona look to add to a large trophy case. Ahead of the CWS, we'll examine all eight teams. With only two SEC teams in the field, LSU fans are likely unfamiliar with most of these squads. Here are three things to know about the Arizona Wildcats. 1. Starting pitching is a question mark Owen Kramkowski and Smith Bailey are the two constants in Arizona's starting rotation, but results are a mixed bag. Kramkowski pitched seven innings of one-run baseball in his regional start, but surrendered eight earned runs in just 1.1 innings vs. UNC in the super regional. Bailey's numbers aren't great either, with 4.01 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 83 innings. They've been good enough to get Arizona this far, but it's fair to wonder if they'll hold up against elite lineups in Omaha. 2. Elite options in the bullpen While the starting pitching is questionable, the bullpen should be one of the best in Omaha. Reliever Tony Pluta was All-Big 12 Second Team in 2025 and owns a 1.26 ERA and 0.81 WHIP across 35.2 innings. Pluta is listed at 5-foot-9, but he doesn't pitch like it. For two years, he's been one of the best bullpen arms in the country. Look out for Raul Garayzar, who's made 21 appearances in 2025, seven of them being starts. Garayzar has a 2.81 ERA in 57.2 innings. 3. Don't expect many home runs With 41 homers on the year, Arizona ranks last in the Big 12. Mason White is one of the nation's top sluggers with 19, and Aaron Walton has 14, but those are the only two Wildcats with double-digit homers. Just because it doesn't rely on homers doesn't mean Arizona can't slug, though. The Wildcats rank fourth in the Big 12 with a .486 slugging percentage. Arizona's 36 triples led the conference, too.

Arizona uses three-run second inning to beat Cal Poly 3-2 in opener of Eugene Regional
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Easton Breyfogle homered after Tommy Splaine's RBI triple in a three-run second inning and Owen Kramkowski made it stand up as No. 2 seed Arizona hung on for a 3-2 victory over third-seeded Cal Poly in the opener of the Eugene Regional on Friday. Arizona (40-18) advances to play the winner of the nightcap between No. 1 seed Oregon and No. 4 seed Utah Valley in a Saturday matchup. Cal Poly (41-18) will play an elimination game against the loser earlier Saturday. The Wildcats' rally came with two outs and the bases empty against Mustangs starter Griffin Naess (7-3). Andrew Cain — who batted seventh in the order — walked on a 3-2 pitch and Splain tripled to right-center field. Breyfogle followed with a two-run homer to right-center for a 3-0 lead. Kramkowski (9-5) allowed one run on eight hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts. Tony Pluta pitched a scoreless ninth for his 13th save. Dylan Kordic had an RBI single off Kramkowski in the sixth for Cal Poly's first run. Cam Hoiland homered to left off Wildcats reliever Garrett Hicks in the eighth. Arizona has advanced to the College World Series 18 times. The Wildcats have won four of them — most recently in 2012. They have been runners-up four times — most recently in 2016.
