Wednesday, May 7 forecast: Localized pockets of heavy rain possible into Thursday
On and off showers have been more on to the north and more off to the south throughout the day. It looks like this trend will continue into the overnight with a more persistent area of rain closer to Central Missouri, with areas to the south dealing with the more scattered variety of showers. Download our KOLR 10 weather app The persistent area of rain to the north may become focused enough and heavy enough for some higher rainfall totals in spots and possibly even some localized flooding. Keep the umbrellas close again Thursday with another day of on and off showers throughout the day. There will likely be some breaks in the clouds with peeks of sun pushing temperatures into the upper 60s Thursday afternoon. Showers will finally clear out from north to south Thursday night with clouds on the way out by sunrise. A mix of sun and clouds Friday will make for a nice finish to the week with highs in the low 70s. The weekend looks just as nice with chilly mornings and comfortably warm afternoons. A reborn form of this week's storm will visit us early next week, slinging clouds and a risk of showers our way Monday. Warm and mostly dry weather will follow for Tuesday through Wednesday. Temperatures will climb to early summer levels by Wednesday, and the day is shaping up to be one of the warmest yet this year. The warmth may pave the way to severe weather as we close out the week. At the very least, the overall look of the pattern may support episodes of thunderstorm activity through the following weekend. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Ozarks exempt from massive brood cicada invasion in 2025
After the 'cicada-pocalypse' of 2024, we won't experience a wave as bad as this year. Last year saw the emergence of Brood XIX cicadas with their distinctive red eyes, black bodies, and deafening choruses. This massive brood of cicadas are on a 13-year cycle, meaning entomologists don't expect their return in 2037. 2025 will be considerably quieter for our region. While Brood XIV, a 17-year cicada brood, is beginning to emerge across parts of the Ohio River Valley, the Ozarks are not part of that brood's territory. Now, this doesn't mean we will be completely free of the blaring bugs. Annual cicadas will begin emerging over the coming weeks as soil temperatures start to warm, sending the signal to bugs that it's time to resurface. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Minnesota man finds 3.81-carat brown diamond at Arkansas State Park
MURFREESBORO, Ark. — A visitor of Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas uncovered a 3.81-carat brown diamond in the ground while visiting with his family in April. The man who found the diamond was David DeCook, a regular visitor to the park from Stewartville, Minnesota. The state park says DeCook was visiting with his family on Monday, April 21, when he spotted what he first thought was a candy wrapper south of the park's south wash pavilion. However, once he saw a metallic shine on the object, he realized he had discovered the diamond. The 3.81-carat diamond is described as having a metallic, copper luster with a blocky, triangular shape. DeCook returned to the park a few days later to register the diamond. He decided to name his find The Duke Diamond after his dog and has not yet decided what to do with the diamond. The 3.81-carat diamond is the biggest diamond found at Crater of Diamonds since French visitor Julien Navas found a 7.46-carat Carine Diamond in January 2024. Wednesday, May 7 forecast: Periods of rain today and tomorrow
Rain showers held off until late yesterday, and more rain showers are expected at times today and again on Thursday. This rainy weather stretch is thanks to a slow-moving storm system that will swirl through the region over the next few days. Download our KOLR 10 weather app Scattered rain showers and an isolated thunderstorm will continue off and on this morning. The focus for showery activity should shift to Central and Southeast Missouri this afternoon. A few thunderstorms may be able to develop late in the afternoon across Southwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas. Peaks of sunshine may raise instability enough in these areas to get a storm to produce a little hail and wind. Scattered showers become isolated tonight and will remain thin in coverage on Thursday. A few heavier, brief downpours are possible on Thursday, and like before, the severe weather risk is very low. The heaviest rain totals will fall in Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas through Thursday. Amounts of 1″ or more may be common in these areas. Elsewhere, rainfall amounts will be scattered and lower between 0.25″ and 0.50″. Drier air will work in by Friday, shutting off rain and clearing out clouds. Rain may be slow to clear out south of Hwy. 60 Thursday night, but should gradually shift out of the area Friday morning. This will pave the way to what should be a nice Mother's Day weekend. A reborn form of this week's storm may pay us a visit early next week, slinging clouds and a risk of showers our way Monday. Warm and mostly dry weather will follow for Tuesday through Thursday. Highs will likely be in the 80s, with the overnights also getting warmer. A risk of stronger storms is still on the table for the end of next week. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Local Catholic church prepares for the election of new Pope
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Catholics around the world are getting ready to celebrate the election of a new pope as the conclave begins on Wednesday. All eyes will be on the Sistine Chapel to see white smoke and hear the famous words, 'Habemus papam,' which is Latin for 'We have a pope.' Father Patrick says this conclave will be more in-depth compared to the 2013 conclave after Pope Benedict the Sixteenth stepped down due to health concerns, a first for the catholic church in nearly 600 years. 'The conclave that saw the election of Pope Francis, the church has never experienced what she experienced, especially with Pope Francis, because Pope Francis was different. I mean, he was different, of course. He said the cardinals went to a faraway land to pick a pope,' said Father Patrick Nwokoye. The conclave is an election, but not like traditional elections that we see here in the United States. 'This is not a political affair, but more so is a very sacred moment when each cardinal comes up with their particular vote,' Nwokoye said. '133 cardinals will be voting in this conclave and must be under the age of 80. Starting in the afternoon on May 7th, the cardinals will cast their vote in the first ballot. There must be a two-thirds majority vote in order to select the pope, which can happen after one day or even three years. If a pope is not selected, then the ballots will be burned and black smoke with pile from the chimney. However, this election, we could see white smoke sooner than later.' 'This conclave is going to be very brief, and so I'm not putting any money on this, but I really do believe that the conclave will probably, you know, by Friday, we should have a pope,' said Nwokoye. As for what qualities the next successor to sit on the throne of St. Peter the church hopes to have, the most important one is to embody the teachings of Jesus to help unite people from all over the world. 'A man who truly loves Jesus. I mean, who would help us to know who Jesus is even more a man who we can call father, who understands the heart of his children,' Nwokoye said.
