Vadakadu violence could have been prevented with timely action: CPI(M) State Secretary

Criticising the Pudukkottai district administration for failing to prevent the caste-based violence in Vadakadu village, CPI(M) State secretary P. Shanmugam on Saturday said the incident could have been prevented had proper precautionary steps been taken. Speaking to reporters after visiting affected SC families and others from the Most Backward Class community in Vadakadu, Mr. Shanmugam said the administration was aware of long-standing tensions between the groups and should have ensured additional security during the temple festival on May 5. 'The violence could have been prevented with timely intervention,' he said. He also met those undergoing treatment at Pudukkottai Government Medical College Hospital. Mr. Shanmugam condemned the police statement issued on May 6, calling it premature as it was released before a full inquiry. 'Such unilateral declarations raise concerns about transparency and may undermine public trust,' he said, adding that the case should be transferred to another officer to ensure impartial investigation. He also urged the district administration to expedite court proceedings related to the temple and sports ground in Vadakadu and said both communities must accept the verdict, whatever it may be. Mr. Shanmugam also urged the district administration to assess property damage suffered by Dalit residents and provide relief under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. He also requested that a completely burnt house be rebuilt under the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam scheme. Later, he met Collector M. Aruna and submitted a memorandum urging swift compensation and a peaceful resolution to the ongoing tensions. Meanwhile, police sources said that in connection with the Vadakadu incident, a total of 26 people had been arrested earlier—20 from the MBC community and six from the SC community. On Saturday, two more individuals, one from each community, were arrested, bringing the total number of arrests to 28.

CPI(M) urges Centre to withdraw new Labour Codes

CPI(M) State Secretary P. Shanmugam on Friday urged the Central government to withdraw the four new Labour Codes. He said that these Codes were against the rights and welfare of the workers. Addressing mediapersons before a party meeting in Dindigul district, he said that the new Labour Codes: the Code on Wages, the Industrial Relations Code, the Code on Occupational Safety, Health and Working conditions and the Code on Social Security should be immediately withdrawn He requested Chief Minister M. K. Stalin to take the steps to pass a resolution urging the Centre to withdraw the Labour Codes. Trade unions have already expressed their strong opposition to the Labour Codes, he said, adding that the party backed the decision of the trade union to stage a protest against the Labour Codes. He said that CPI(M) has extended its support for 'Operation Sindoor' by Indian Armed Forces launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. The killing of innocent civilians cannot be tolerated. Necessary action should be taken, he said. However, he criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for being absent at the all party meeting that was held after the terror attack. He urged the Prime Minister to convene a Special Parliament Session to discuss the issue. He said that the party has decided to conduct a 10-day march in Tamil Nadu in June against hate and communal politics practised by BJP-led Central government Mr. Shanmugam urged the State government to recruit people to various posts on a permanent basis and not through contract or outsourcing methods. Steps were being taken to fill these posts on contract basis or through outsourcing. This approach towards recruitment should change, he said. He also urged the State government to recover the panchami lands from encroachers and ensure that it was provided to the real beneficiaries.

CPI(M) State secretary slams BJP for politicising Pahalgam attack

CPI (M) State Secretary P. Shanmugam on Saturday said his party condemned the BJP government at the Centre for using the Pahalgam attack to intensify 'hate politics' against a particular religion. Addressing media persons in Thoothukudi, he said: 'Until now, attacks were predominantly directed against government employees and security personnel. However, for the first time, innocent tourists have been targeted, and such acts are utterly condemnable and cannot be accepted under any circumstances.' He urged the Central government to reconsider and withdraw the decision, made under the pretext of action against terrorists, mandating all Pakistanis who came to India on medical visas for treatment to leave within a specified timeframe. It was unfair to associate innocent patients with terrorism. The decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty was a violation of international laws, he said and questioned the Indian government's plan to store the surplus water. The CPI(M) condemned such inhuman actions. At the same time, the government should take action against terrorists regardless of their identity, without any compromise. 'The BJP has no sense of patriotism, and if they truly cared, the Prime Minister should have visited Jammu and Kashmir immediately, but instead, his focus is on the election campaign. For the past 10 years, their actions have been solely aimed at creating political opportunities out of every incident and the same applies with the Pahalgam attack,' he added. In Tamil Nadu, the Vice-Chancellors of government and private colleges had showed their disapproval of the Governor's illegal actions by not attending the VCs' meeting conducted by him. The Governor had no rights to organise such meetings and he continued to do so even after the Supreme Court's order against such actions. He also condemned the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, stating that the idea of using majority to pass any law, regardless of its nature, was contrary to the principle of the Indian political system, and creating a new law that went against the Indian Constitution was unacceptable. Mr. Shanmugam urged the Tamil Nadu government to disburse crop insurance funds to affected farmers across the State. The government must fulfil the promises made during the election campaign, including government employees, to secure victory in the coming Assembly elections.
