Beam of bridge under construction collapses

Kozhikode: A concrete beam of an under construction Thorayi Kadavu bridge near Koyilandy collapsed at 3.30pm on Thursday. Though there were dozens of labourers at the site when the mishap took place, no one was injured as they were moved away in time. According to Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) officials, the collapse happened during the casting of the bridge's 20th beam. A pipe pumping concrete to the casting area got blocked and when pressure was increased, it jerked violently, destabilizing the temporary girder supporting the wooden block frame, causing it to slip. "The casting had just begun and only 2 cubic metres of concrete had been poured. The engineers got time to move the laborers away," an official said. A person who was managing the pump operations sustained minor injuries after the incident. The Rs 23 crore bridge construction works launched in 2023 was being carried out under the supervision of KRFB by contracting firm PMR Constructions using KIIFB funds. The bridge connects Chemancheri and Atholi panchayats. PWD minister P A Mohamed Riyas said he has sought a report from KRFB and promised stern action against those responsible. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo Locals alleged negligence by both the contractor and supervising officials. Opposition leader V D Satheesan said that the collapse of the bridge was the third under construction bridge to collapse in the state in recent times. He asked whether those who pursued legal action against former PWD minister V K Ebrahim Kunju over the Palarivattom bridge would also seek a case against the current minister in light of repeated failures. Min instructs NH-66 works to be completed on schedule

T'puram: PWD minister P A Mohamed Riyas instructed that works on NH-66 in state should be completed on schedule. Riyas instructed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials during a high-level meeting to review the highway projects on Friday. The minister said a precise timeline should be established for the works and it must be ensured that the projects are completed within this timeframe. However, the construction should be carried out with excellence. NHAI regional officer should pay special attention to areas where the expected progress was not achieved. Actions should be taken on a war footing in these stretches. Even though it is the rainy season, works like precasting can be carried out during this time and should be completed. The minister assured that the state govt will provide all necessary support to complete the works. Riyas said condition of service roads and existing roads in the work areas should be closely monitored. In many places, people are facing difficulties with the service roads. It is imperative to ensure that the existing roads are fully traffic-worthy in all stretches immediately. There should be no negligence in this regard, the minister instructed. Such works should be carried out urgently as the rainy season subsides, he added. The progress of each NH-66 stretch was evaluated in the meeting. NHAI reported that 70% of the works were completed. It was also informed that over 400km were converted into six lanes. Other projects under NHAI's leadership were also reviewed. PWD secretary K Biju, additional secretary A Shibu, district collectors, NHAI regional officer, various project directors and contractors participated in the meeting. SCTL seeks central funding for Chalai heritage project

Thiruvananthapuram: The long-dormant Chalai heritage street project is set to advance as Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (SCTL) has requested seed funds from the Centre's newly announced Urban Challenge Fund. SCTL, the project's implementing agency, submitted a proposal seeking around Rs 60 crore from the Urban Challenge Fund. SCTL estimates indicate that work on the main street of Chalai will commence within three months of fund approval. The preliminary rounds of discussions have already been completed with the ministry of urban affairs. A senior SCTL official said, "Chalai heritage project is a long-cherished vision. We are now in an advanced stage, and with the support of the tourism and public works departments, we expect to move forward once central funding is approved. This redevelopment will transform Chalai into a vibrant heritage street while boosting local commerce and tourism," he said. The project, initially launched in 2018, was modelled on Kozhikode's SM Street and aimed to convert the historic market into a pedestrian-friendly corridor, complete with umbrella-style canopies, uniform heritage arches, tiled footpaths, underground wiring, LED lighting, Wi-Fi, graffiti related to heritage and landscaped seating areas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Phase I, which includes revamping eight feeder roads leading to the market, is nearing completion. With total road-upgrade costs projected at Rs 30 crore, around Rs 15 crore has already been spent for Phase I. Other phases, including the main arterial street and a proposed multi-level car park on corporation land, remain stalled for lack of capital. Tourism department, which earlier pledged funding along with the PWD, has not yet convened the stakeholders' meeting. The meeting, expected to be chaired by minister P A Mohamed Riyas, will determine the final blueprint and inter-departmental coordination. Merchant groups have expressed frustration at stalled work, poor roads and shrinking footfalls. "We have waited for years to see Chalai get the attention it deserves," said Salim P of the Chalai Traders Association. "If done properly, the project will enhance business and attract more visitors," he added. SCTL expects that once seed funding is approved and tourism-PWD coordination is finalised, infrastructure upgrades, including pedestrian corridors, drainage, signage and heritage enhancements, will progress rapidly. SCTL is also advancing other initiatives, including Palayam-Ayyankali Hall nightlife stretch and Connemara Market redevelopment, but has faced delays due to cost escalation and community opposition. At Connemara Market, around 90% of traders have been evicted while the nightlife corridor between Palayam and Ayyankali Hall is scheduled to open in Aug.
