The PATH is acting messy this week—here's how to get free or discounted rides to make up for it
If you commute through Hoboken on the PATH, brace yourself. Following a July 12 derailment blamed on switch problems at Hoboken Terminal, the PATH system is limping through the week with delays, reduced service and a lot of frustrated riders. But to soften the blow, transit officials are offering a slate of alternate travel options, including some that are completely free or steeply discounted. From now through Friday, July 25 at 11:59pm, PATH riders can use NJ Transit rail and light rail without paying extra and hop ferries across the Hudson for just three bucks. You'll need a valid PATH fare card or a digital cross-honoring pass from the RidePATH app to take advantage, but the trade-off might be worth it if it means avoiding the Hoboken chaos. NJ Transit is cross-honoring PATH riders at Hoboken, Secaucus and New York Penn Station, and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail is doing the same at Exchange Place, Newport and Hoboken. Over on the water, NY Waterway is offering $3 ferry tickets during peak hours on routes between Hoboken and Brookfield Place, as well as Hoboken and the Midtown terminal at West 39th Street. Just be sure to ride during the posted time windows—this isn't an all-day free-for-all. Service disruptions stem from ongoing repairs to the complex rail switches that let PATH trains navigate in and out of Hoboken Terminal. Those switches were recently replaced as part of the PATH Forward rehab project but are now being blamed for a derailment that sent the last car of a 33rd Street-bound train off the tracks. The crash didn't cause injuries, but it did cause service to grind to a halt and has forced trains to run less frequently ever since. In the meantime, PATH is urging commuters to use the alternate routes while repairs continue. It's not ideal, but it's not nothing. PATH riders and elected officials call for better service
NEW JERSEY (PIX11) — Members of Hudson County Complete Streets tell PIX11 News that although the population in both Hudson and Essex counties has increased over the years, the PATH is running less frequently. 'I couldn't handle the commute time anymore,' said Stephanie Martinez from North Bergen, who has been riding the path her whole life. More Local News Last year, Martinez decided to move to Newark after getting a job, because she found that taking the PATH was so infuriating. 'I had to wait so long and also anxiety about the rush that the doors won't close, and I had to wait another 30 minutes for the next one,' she added. 'All we are asking is for the governors and Port Authority to come to the table and commit to a plan to bring the system up to modern standards' said one of the more than 5,000 Hudson and Essex Counties residents who signed a petition asking for more frequent train service during off- peak hours on nights and weekends. According to Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla, PATH trains come every two minutes during peak hours compared to 20 to 40 minutes during off-peak hours. 'If the Port Authority is serious about prioritizing people over cars, they would make the necessary investments to get the necessary services during off-peak hours,' said Bhalla. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State Passengers such as Armani Ramsey, who ride the path between New York and New Jersey, also want this. 'We want our trains to be less crowded. You are getting smooshed on like a sardine. Even if you wait for 1, 2, or 3 trains, even those trains are still crowded.' David Ciano from the Better Path campaign is also asking for other changes. 'We are also asking for an extension to Newark Airport on the PATH. The last time the path was extended and a new stop was added was in 1917,' said Ciano. PIX11 News contacted the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, following up on the demands of the riders and to see if they have read the petition. A Port Authority spokesperson sent the following statement: 'Our $430 million PATH Forward program requires work that is scheduled during lower ridership periods on the 24/7 PATH system. This critical work can lead to longer wait times between trains, which can lead to more crowded platforms and trains. The end result of this two-year rehabilitation program will be improved service reliability, faster speeds, and modernized stations. Commuters thrilled after Hoboken PATH station reopens
HOBOKEN, N.J. (PIX11) — It's been a rough 25 days for Hoboken commuters. After a nearly month-long closure for a major makeover, the Hoboken PATH station reopened on Tuesday. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State 'I'm excited about this. This is good for Hoboken. This is good for the people,' said one PATH rider. During the 25-day closure, nearly 20,000 daily commuters were shuttled to other PATH stops or forced onto the bus or ferry. People told us for the most part it was a smooth transition, but they are glad to have the station they know and love back up and running. 'It looks nice. It smells like fresh paint,' said commuter Rodrigo Villa. 'I love that fresh smell. It feels like moving into a new apartment.' More Local News With $31 million worth of improvements, including new tracks, train signals, safer walkways, and new turnstiles. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said the overhaul is a major component of the two-year PATH Forward program aimed at improving ride reliability. But the work isn't entirely finished. Hoboken PATH station reopens after weeks of renovations. Here's a look at the changes.
The Hoboken PATH train station reopened Tuesday morning for the first time in nearly month. The station has been closed for weeks of renovations, including extensive track work. After 25 days of inconvenience and detours, commuters are returning to a newly renovated station that should be more reliable and feature an elevated ambiance. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the nearly month-long closure was needed for critical repairs and major station work to revamp the 116-year-old system. During the first week of the station's closure, crews jackhammered and blasted away old infrastructure, making way for the new, which includes wider staircases, refurbished platforms and thousands of feet of new track. Workers also installed a modern, custom-made switch, allowing trains to move between tracks seamlessly while reducing delays. The improvements are part of a $430 million investment program, known as PATH Forward, to improve the speed, reliability and overall passenger experience on the transit system. For the 30,000 commuters who travel in and out of the station everyday, the upgrades are a welcome sight. "To have it back is so convenient, so much better. We were traveling to Journal Square to get here, which is a little bit inconvenient, because it's cold, it's windy, it's a little bit longer of a walk. So this is way, way better," one woman said Tuesday morning. "It looks better, it's cleaner, the air is better, it's brighter. So yes, very happy to have it back."

Travel alternatives to consider as Hoboken PATH station closes for 25 days
HOBOKEN, N.J. (PIX11) – Extensive renovations at the Hoboken PATH station have forced it to close for nearly a month. The purpose of the 25-day closure is to finish work faster instead of taking a year to complete with interrupted service, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. More Local News The closure is part of a two-year, $430 million PATH Forward program to improve rail service reliability. Thousands of riders will now have to rework their daily commute. Here are some travel alternatives to consider while the station is closed: PATH customers can take the New York Waterway Ferry from Hoboken to New York. A free shuttle bus will operate 24/7 between Hoboken, Newport and Exchange Place stations. NJ Transit will increase the frequency of the 126 bus. Commuters who travel to Exchange Place or Newport stations can connect to PATH, which is adding service. Commuters can also take the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail between Hoboken, Newport and Exchange Place stations to connect to PATH. The station is slated to reopen on Feb. 25.
