PCSH Successfully Performs 180 Knee Surgeries With Robotic-assisted Technology
IPOH, June 23 (Bernama) -- Perak Community Specialist Hospital (PCSH) has performed 180 successful surgeries using the robotic-assisted Total Knee Replacement (TKR) method since the technology's introduction at the hospital in June 2023. PCSH resident orthopaedic surgeon Dr Yeoh Kian Hua said the robotic technology, which utilises the CORI surgical system, assists orthopaedic surgeons by generating 3D simulations for pre-surgical planning and supports more accurate alignment during surgery. CORI is a robotic surgical system designed to assist surgeons in performing minimally invasive orthopaedic procedures, particularly for knee and hip surgeries. 'Traditional surgery relies heavily on the surgeon's manual precision, whereas this system generates a 3D model of the patient's knee before surgery. This helps the surgeon identify the correct alignment, ensuring the procedure is conducted with greater accuracy and effectiveness. 'The method also reduces the risk of complications and bleeding and expedites the recovery process,' he told Bernama at the Orthopaedic Symposium: Latest Developments and Best Practices in Orthopaedics, held yesterday. Dr Yeoh said the surgery takes about one to two hours, and patients typically require between two and six weeks to fully recover. 'After the surgery, patients will need to undergo physiotherapy, and the recommended rehabilitation period is up to three months to achieve optimal results,' he said. He said this method, which is suitable for individuals across all age groups, is recommended particularly for patients with stage four knee osteoarthritis. 'Knee osteoarthritis is a condition in which the cartilage in the knee joint gradually deteriorates. When the cartilage is damaged, the bones within the joint can rub against each other, leading to pain, swelling, stiffness, and restricted knee movement.

Perak targets enforcing vape sales ban in Oct
IPOH: The state government is targeting the banning of electronic cigarettes or vapes sales in October throughout Perak. Perak Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan said a working paper on the matter is being drafted by the Perak State Health Department (JKN). 'We have instructed the Perak JKN led by its director Dr Feisul Idzwan Mustapha to ensure that this working paper can be completed as soon as possible. 'The working paper will also be brought to the State Executive Council (MMK) to decide on its enforcement, which I am targeting around October,' he said. He said this when met after officiating the Orthopedic Symposium Programme: Latest Developments and Best Practices in the Orthopedic Field organised by the Perak Community Specialist Hospital (PCSH) at the Kinta River Front Hotel here, today. On June 4, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad explained that the state government is comprehensively examining the need to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes in Perak. Saarani said the matter had been raised in the MMK but there were several matters that needed to be comprehensively refined. Meanwhile, Sivanesan said that although he admitted that the action would cause uneasiness among vape operators, it would benefit the people overall, especially in terms of health. 'We are ready (for complaints) about this matter and for us what is good for the people we will continue,' he said. In addition, he said more than 90 individuals consisting of orthopedic specialists from all over the country participated in the programme organised by PCSH. He said it should be emulated by other private hospitals in Perak because it aims to provide knowledge and assist in disseminating the latest technology used in the field now.
