PDX carpet reimagined: Habitat for Humanity sells authentic airport squares
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – No other airport carpet has achieved such internet fame as Portland's.
The distinctly 1980s-style turquoise print has inspired shoes, socks, blankets and at least one tattoo. It even served as grand marshal for the Rose Festival's Starlight Parade in 2015.
If you've ever wondered how you can get your hands on an authentic piece of the decades-old wool tapestry, you're in luck.
Habitat for Humanity's Portland Region ReStores is offering squares of the original PDX carpet for sale.
They were selected by the airport, among others, to receive the carpet after it was removed in 2015. The goal was to find sustainable ways to reuse it, to help keep it out of landfills.
ReStore offers the carpet in unframed 12-by-13-inch squares for $70, though custom sizes are also available while supplies last.
According to the ReStore , the geometric design was meant to represent a birds-eye view of the north and south runways of the PDX airport, as seen from the control tower.
