Partnership encourages businesses to come into Wahluke schools

Jun. 3—MATTAWA — The Wahluke School District is inviting businesses in Mattawa, or any business outside of Mattawa that's interested, to participate in a new initiative that will bring volunteers from those businesses to Wahluke classrooms. Wahluke Superintendent Andy Harlow said "Partners in Educating Kids" is a way to increase connections between school and community. People have told him, Harlow said, that sometimes it's difficult to build the kind of relationships between WSD and businesses that can be found in other cities like Othello and Quincy. "I just don't believe it," he said. "I think we have an amazing community. We have different challenges, for sure, but it's taking time to develop these relationships. It might look a little different than Quincy or Othello, but it can be done." The PEAK program will start in the 2025-26 school year. Participating businesses can choose to support one or more of WSD's elementary schools, Wahluke Junior High, Wahluke High School or at the district level. Participants donate to the school they're supporting, $500 for an elementary school or $1,000 for WJHS or WHS. "What makes this partnership different is it requires the PEAK partner to be in the building they're sponsoring three times during the year. And (the sponsor visits) can be all sorts of things," Harlow said. Some businesses have already signed up, including the Columbia Basin Health Association, Umpqua Bank, the real estate agency Generations Home Team NW and Grant County Public Utility District. Harlow said he's had people from other businesses express interest. "We're still looking for partners," he said. The South Grant County Chamber of Commerce is a sponsoring partner with WSD, and Pam Thorsen, secretary to the board of directors, said she thinks it's a good way for students and business owners to learn more about each other. "There's a lot of opportunity to engage the community," she said. The children are the next generation of employees and business owners, she said, whether in Mattawa or elsewhere. It's good for business owners to get to know them and for young people to get a look at the world after graduation. Thorsen said there are a lot of people in and around Mattawa — and elsewhere — who have information and experiences that could and would be beneficial to WSD students. She cited a Desert Aire neighbor who's an airline pilot, and the winery employees at a WHS career education fair who detailed opportunities available in that industry. "You just don't know where you might find resources," she said. Harlow said the PEAK initiative grew out of the effort to strengthen connections between the district and its residents. Sometimes it isn't easy to get volunteers for school activities, but in one case, the 2025 Amazing Shake, almost all the volunteers were from outside the district. Harlow said district officials wanted to find other ways to get out into the community and bring the community to school. "Then, just by chance, I was at a presentation at the Pasco School District," he said. Pasco has been sponsoring a similar program for about 15 years, he said. "I'd never heard of it, and I was totally amazed," he said.

T-Mobile COO shares where the company can ‘do better'

Under longtime CEO John Legere, T-Mobile often seemed like a company engaged in a fight its opponents did not want to be part of. Legere, at least at the start of his tenure, was running the last-place wireless phone carrier. He slowly built his customer base by calling out his rivals for all the terrible things they did to their customers. Related: Comcast hopes to win back fleeing customers with generous offer Prior to T-Mobile becoming an upstart player, AT&T and Verizon essentially shared a monopoly. Neither company wanted to kill the goose that laid the golden eggs, so they were unwilling to do things like drop overage charges or get rid of contracts. T-Mobile essentially had nothing to lose. Legere slowly got rid of all the things consumers did not like about their cell phone provider. He made his company consumer-friendly, and that actually forced AT&T and Verizon to do the same. Legere would likely go down as a member of the CEO Hall of Fame, if such a thing ever existed. When he left the company, it created a bit of a void. T-Mobile had always been a personality-driven business, and current CEO Mike Sievert does not share his predecessor's flair for performance. That doesn't mean he's not a good CEO, but T-Mobile no longer racks up the free publicity it used to earn. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter It also seems to have lost a bit of its identity. The company's new COO, however, might be willing to take up some of that space. He has only been with the company for about a month, and his first statement has a "guns blazing" feel reminiscent of - albeit less bombastic than - Legere's style. Srini Gopalan has only served as T-Mobile (TMUS) COO for about a month, but he represents a major change for the company. Most top-tier T-Mobile executives have come from within the company, but the new COO is an outsider who has to learn the brand. That means learning the T-Mobile culture, something he has thrown himself into. He shared a lengthy LinkedIn post about his early thoughts on the company. "I had the unique opportunity to spend a few days on the ground in Maui at our annual PEAK event - T-Mobile's most prestigious award celebration - where we honored the top .3% of employees. T-Mobile takes recognition seriously (while having a lot of fun!), and it was so inspiring to be a part of it all," he said. The event was also a learning experience for Gopalan. "I left Maui with a huge sense of pride in belonging to a culture that takes the time to reward its top performers in such a big way, but also with some great insights from the connections I made with this exceptional group that is so passionate about driving this business forward and helping identify where we can do better," he added. Retail stories: AT&T quietly issues stern warning to customersSam's Club makes a big change to a beloved membership perkGameStop announces risky move amid store closures His early experiences have been encouraging. "My early observation is that this team has not only a keen ability to address challenges right in front of them, but is also thinking ahead to what's next. That mix of urgency and vision is rare, and it's what sets this team apart. I'm excited to continue learning and, at the same time, already seeing areas where I can be an enabler," he shared. Gopalan believes his job is to keep the focus on customers. "My job is not to simply pull together things that people who report to me do. Instead, I aim to add bandwidth by helping to look left to right across the organization and finding opportunities to bring technology and digital together. That means tapping into our understanding of what customers want to create even better experiences for them. Playing this role is not new to me, and I'm excited to keep digging in," he posted. Gopalan believes that T-Mobile has the right people in place and just needs to build on what it's already doing. "I'm building on a great foundation. I've seen organizations before where the first big focus when coming new into a company needs to be about getting everyone focused on thinking about customers first. Fortunately, this is already deeply embedded in our unique Un-carrier culture. So instead, we can focus on how we take the next steps in this Un-carrier journey. There's so much to accomplish with this incredible team in the months and years ahead, moving from being a challenger to becoming a champion," he added. Related: PepsiCo makes swift move to avoid major boycott from consumers The new COO believes it's important to have big goals and engage in an endless cycle of improvement. He also made it clear that the wireless carrier has to keep pushing industry boundaries. "T-Mobile has massive aspirations - big initiatives that require us to keep rewriting the rules of this industry - and what better time to do that than now, when we're already building on a foundation of success? I'm looking forward to working with this amazing team to unlock what's next for customers across the country and keep pushing the bounds, for them, to make things better. Let's go," he added. NHRA Pomona Results: A Record for Greg Anderson; Clay Millican Denies Tony Stewart

NHRA Pro Stock star Greg Anderson reset the In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip's class elapsed-time record for the second time Sunday at the Lucas Oil Winternationals as he defeated KB Titan Racing teammate Dallas Glenn for the fourth straight time. It made Anderson a 108-time winner, breaking a tie with sportsman greats Dan Fletcher and Frank Manzo and becoming the second-most winning racer ever in the sports 74-year history. Only John Force, with his 157 victories, has more triumphs. Also on the iconic Southern California racetrack in the Mission Foods Drag Racing Series' third of 20 races, Clay Millican denied Tony Stewart his first Top Fuel victory in a second try, and Jack Beckman delivered John Force Racing its 300th Funny Car victory. Clay Millican, the six-time champion and winningest IHRA driver, blew the engine of his Mighty Fire Breaker / Parts Plus Dragster at the finish line—'The Mighty Fire Breaker was on fire,' he said. But he earned his eighth overall victory. After jumping up and down and clapping his hands, Millican said crew chief Jim Oberhofer told him before that final-round run, 'I've got it loaded up. Two things are going to happen: We're going to win and we're going to blow it up, and if we lose, we'll be a footnote in history as the ones to let Tony Stewart win his first race. Thank goodness we ain't that footnote in history. 'Tony Stewart is going to win one of these things very soon. He wins everything. He's won in everything he's ever driven,' Millican said. 'But look who won today. I knew it blowed up, but I kept my foot in it anyway.' Millican's feat came one day after Rick Ware Racing scored its first victories of the season with Progressive America Flat Track Series riders Briar Bauman and Chase Saathoff at the Sanoia Short Track in Georgia. Bauman won the Mission AFT Super Twins race, and Saathoff won the ATF Singles event. At six o'clock Monday morning, Jack Beckman will be back at his job in the Los Angeles area as an elevator repairman, but Sunday he was the toast of the Funny Car class. The PEAK Chevy Camaro driver beat first-time finalist Daniel Wilkerson to record his 36th Funny Car victory. Before the final round, Beckman said of Wilkerson and his SCAG Ford team, 'That's a Cinderella story, and they've done a fantastic job. But that Chevy is hungry. That PEAK squad's on mean right now for Graham Rahal Racing, for After banking a cool $10,000 Saturday for winning the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge bonus race, Beckman earned his second straight victory at Pomona, dating back to his victory in last November's Finals. Beckman has improved in each of the season's three races. He exited in the second round at the season-opening Gatornationals, reached the semifinals at Phoenix last week, and won Sunday to inch closer to his 500th round-win. He's at 488. Greg Anderson, winner of the past two events, said he was humbled by the company he's in after beating Dallas Glenn for the fourth consecutive time. 'Just to be mentioned with John Force is amazing. I'll never catch that record. I'm proud to be second to that man,' the Racing Equipment Camaro owner-driver said. This was Anderson's 186th final round and the fourth straight featuring him and Glenn. That includes the Finals last November here on this same dragstrip. And that was for the first time such a performance happened since 1980, when Bob Glidden and Lee Shepard dominated. The last time Anderson was not in a final round was Sept. 29, 2024, at St. Louis, when Glenn and Aaron Stanfield took the spotlight. Anderson has won the Winternationals seven time as part of his 16-victory history here. Perennial Funny Car championship contender Bob Tasca failed to qualify for the first time since the spring Las Vegas race in 2014. He never got down the track under full power in four qualifying chances. Final finish order (1-16) at the 65th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at In-N-Out Pomona Dragstrip. Inspired NHRA Legend John Force Says He 'Feels Alive Again'

Ron Capps might have spoiled Austin Prock's otherwise-perfect week Saturday, defeating the current NHRA Funny Car champion in the final round of second annual PRO Superstar Shootout at Florida's Bradenton Motorsports Park. But Prock's boss, John Force, was giddy—not for Capps' victory but for his energized cross-country trip from California. It was Force's longest outing since his June 23 accident last season at the Virginia Nationals near Richmond has left him sidelined with what was diagnosed as a traumatic brain injury. But he was on hand for the preseason exhibition to watch Prock top predecessor Robert Hight's official, NHRA-recognized class-best elapsed time by two-thousandths of a second, at 3.791 seconds during qualifying. He was there to cheer on his own substitute, Jack Beckman, who last February was the live-stream analyst at the inaugural PRO Superstar Shootout. And he watched daughter Brittany make what she called "some killer and consistent passes' in testing her Top Fuel dragster, qualify No. 3, and take out Doug Kalitta to declare that her team is "way ahead of ourselves from where we were last season." It all made John Force declare, "To tell you the truth, this is the first time since Richmond I really felt alive again. We didn't win, but I was excited just to be where I need to be, running my teams and supporting Cornwell, PEAK, Monster, and all our other partners. I can't wait to get to Gainesville [for the March 7-9 season-starting Gatornationals]. "My wife, Laurie, told me I needed to get back in the game,' the 157-time winner and 16-time champion said. 'And being here in Bradenton was just good for my heart. Watching everybody work, watching the cars and the teams, and seeing old friends like Capps, it was just special."
