Report: PGA Tour's Barracuda Championship could change dates or even lose title sponsor

The PGA Tour stop in Reno-Tahoe could be gone after this year, or changing dates to earlier in the year. The 2025 PGA Barracuda Championship will be held July 17-20 with live broadcast coverage on Golf Channel. But Josh Carpenter, who covers golf for Sports Business Journal, reported that two sources told him they do not expect the PGA Barracuda Tour stop to renew after this year. The Corrales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic would take its place on the PGA Tour calendar opposite the British Open. The tournament calendar website shows the Corales Puntacana being played July 16-19, 2026. This year, the Puntacana was played in April opposite the RBC Heritage. Carpenter's sources said if the Reno/Tahoe PGA Tour stop finds a sponsor before the schedule is officially released, it likely would move to June opposite the Traveler's Championship, traditionally played the week after the U.S. Open. In 2023, the PGA Tour announced that Barracuda Networks, Inc., had signed a multi-year extension as title sponsor of the Barracuda Championship. The tournament, which is recognized as a FedExCup event on the PGA Tour, has been held at Tahoe Mountain Club's Old Greenwood Golf Course in Truckee since 2020. The PGA Tour event started at Montreux Golf & Country Club in South Reno. The Barracuda Championship is the only PGA Tour event to use a Modified Stableford Scoring format, having done so since 2012. Barracuda Networks, a Silicon Valley based security company, took over as title sponsor in 2014 and extended its support of the tournament through 2025. Barracuda tournament director Chris Hoff did not respond to requests for comment. Rising stars at 2025 PGA Barracuda There are several player commitments for this summer's event, including Full Swing standout Joel Dahmen, who is joining the field after earning a top-10 finish at the PGA Championship. Also committing is Camilo Villegas, a four-time PGA Tour winner who's spent more than 30 weeks in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking. Erik van Rooyen, the 2021 Barracuda champion is back, as is Nick Dunlap, the defending champion. He was named the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year for 2024. Dunlap is the first player in Tour history to win as an amateur and a professional in the same season, and at age 20 was the youngest player to be named PGA Tour Rookie of the Year since Jordan Spieth in 2013. While the full PGA Tour schedule has yet to be released, the Rocket Classic will be moving back in the schedule. The new dates of July 30-Aug. 2 will push that tournament to after the British Open, which is scheduled for July 16-19 at Royal Birkdale in 2026. The PGA Tour typically releases the schedule for the upcoming year in the late summer or early fall. For the 2026 season, this would likely mean a release date sometime in August or September.
