'A noble calling': DeSantis signs law shortening firefighter shifts, praises their service

PALM BEACH GARDENS — Gov. Ron DeSantis praised the work of Florida's firefighters and signed a bill on June 5 that strengthens the state's commitment to them during an appearance at the 81st Annual Convention of the Florida Professional Firefighters at PGA National Resort & Spa. Speaking to firefighters from around the state, DeSantis said his administration has long prioritized honoring firefighters' life-saving work. "We appreciate your service to the state," he said. "We recognize the fact that you have a duty that you discharge to run into the danger to protect others — family members, friends, whatever may be in harm's way. That's a noble calling, and that's very meaningful to the communities that you serve. So thank you for what you do and keep up the good work." DeSantis said House Bill 929, which passed in April, marks a significant step in reinforcing the state's support for its firefighters. Among its main provisions, the bill limits regular shifts to 42 hours per week to reduce burnout and fatigue, and mandates suicide-prevention efforts as part of safety guidelines. "We ask our firefighters to face danger at a moment's notice," DeSantis said. "You have to run into the fire, you have to respond to emergencies, and you obviously are exposed to a lot of really significant trauma. That takes a toll, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. This bill ensures we recognize and respond to those realities." The bill's primary sponsors, Rep. Erika Booth, R–St. Cloud, and Rep. Danny Alvarez, R–Dover, were at PGA National with DeSantis for the bill-signing ceremony, and both reiterated the state's commitment to its fire service personnel. "To every firefighter across the state of Florida, thank you for your service," Booth said. "Thank you for your strength and for your sacrifice. This law is a step forward. Our commitment to you doesn't end here." Alvarez added that the bill sends a clear message that Florida backs its firefighters with policy, not words. "There's a lot of people that give incredible lip service once they get elected to cops and firefighters because they think that's how they're going to get votes," he said. "But when you press those people to find out what they're really made of, they collapse. Do you know why? Because everyone loves cops until it's time to pay for them. Everyone loves firefighters until it's time to fund them. This bill proves to you that's not true." During his address Thursday, DeSantis said he has proposed a 25% pay increase for state firefighters in the state's budget, which has not yet passed. DeSantis noted that, as of now, the House has excluded a pay raise from its proposed budget, while the Senate most likely will include one. While he remains hopeful that the final budget will include the pay raise, he noted that the state already was "flush" with resources. During his tenure as governor, he said, the state has run budget surpluses that are the "biggest" in the state's history while cutting taxes and supporting first responders, environmental restoration, infrastructure and education. "We're showing that this can be done, and done in a really, really good way," he said. "There are people in other states that could take a lesson from that." Rain prompts last minute adjustments for Region Tradition PGA Tournament

GREYSTONE, Ala. (WIAT) – The rain is causing PGA officials and the Greystone Golf and Country Club to make last minute adjustments ahead of the Regions Tradition Golf Tournament. 'The rain we've had recently has certainly impacted the golf course and will impact the competition a little,' Eventive Sports President Gene Hallman said. 'But, for the most part it won't impact the fans.' Parking is paved which allows fans to avoid mud in the area. The tournament will also offer a shuttle from parking lots to the front of the course. The only difference fans might see is how much time it takes for the golfers to finish a full round. One reason is because Wednesday is cart path only Hallman said. Another reason is because the fairways are very saturated, the ball will sit where it lands. 'This place is usually firm and fast where we get a lot of rolls but it's not going to play that way, so it's going to play much longer than years past,' PGA Player Tag Ridings said. The pros tee off on Thursday. It will be Ridings' first time competing in the Regions Tradition Golf Tournament. 'This is awesome for me,' Ridings said. 'This is a major championship on the champions tour.' Bright greens, fresh sand, and scenic water features – it's a PGA wonderland right here in Alabama. While the rain put a damper on the grounds, it's not putting a damper on Ridings' outlook for the tournament. 'I think we've all gone through this before,' Ridings said. 'But Thursday and Friday look beautiful.' As PGA golfers prepare for the tournament, the PGA National Champion Rules Official Joe Terry is making sure the greens are up to par for the Drummond Company Celebrity Pro-Am on Wednesday. Judge resentences Erik and Lyle Menendez to 50 years to life 'We're expecting a big crowd for with the celebrities that are coming to play, we've got to have a way we can route our golf carts through the course without going through the crowds,' Terry said. Typically, the carts would just drive on the green, but because Wednesday will be cart path only – Terry had to think outside the tee box for a solution. He brought in mulch and sand to create temporary cart paths up to the tees. 'We've got to keep the carts on the hard surface, or we'll destroy the Greystone Golf Course, and we don't want to do that,' Terry said. This marks Terry's 30th year as a PGA National Champion Rules Official. 'I cannot remember a tournament we did not have rain, it's just that time of the year,' Terry said. 'But this one has been maybe as severe as I can remember.' Adjustments were also made to hole #13. The par 5 will be slightly shorter for the tournament. 'What we're going to do is use a lot of common sense, and experience in setting up the golf course to where we can give the players the best conditions possible considering what we're dealing with,' Terry said.
