Phil Mickelson snaps back at Fred Couples' LIV comment: 'This is a low-class jerk move'
Phil Mickelson snaps back at Fred Couples' LIV comment: 'This is a low-class jerk move' Phil Mickelson and Fred Couples may need to be seated at opposite ends of the table at the Champions Dinner at Augusta National next month. Mickelson fired a shot on social media at Couples, who was honored last week in his native Seattle with a lifetime achievement award. During the event, Couples did an interview with Sports Radio 93.3 KJR. When asked about the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, Couples initially said he had little to say but then he added that he talks to Brooks Koepka, the five-time major champion and LIV player, regularly and noted that Koepka wants to return to the PGA Tour. 'He wants to come back. I will say that, believe me, he really wants to come back and play the PGA Tour,' Couples said. Golfweek was the first to report those comments on Monday and the story soon took on a life of its own. Mickelson responded to a Golf Digest post on X that asked, 'Do [you] want Brooks back on the PGA Tour? Mickelson replied, 'If it's not true he damaged a relationship which he cares about. If it is true he took away Brook's [sic] control of the timeline and narrative. Either way this is a low class jerk move by Fred.' Mickelson later scrubbed the tweet from his account. It's not the first time these two have been engaged in a war of words during the PGA Tour-LIV Golf spat. Two years ago, Couples called Mickelson a "nut job." Suffice it to say, these past Masters champs and members of the World Golf Hall of Fame won't be singing Kumbaya together any time soon.

Donald Trump's involvement puts PGA Tour-LIV Golf in better spot for deal, says Jay Monahan
Donald Trump's involvement puts PGA Tour-LIV Golf in better spot for deal, says Jay Monahan Show Caption Hide Caption VIDEO: Former President Donald Trump plays pro-am at LIV Golf Miami Former President Donald Trump paired with Palm Beach County's Brooks Koepka and Sergio Garcia for a pro-am round on Thursday at Trump National Doral Miami. Eric J. Wallace, Wochit PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan expressed gratitude for former President Donald Trump's involvement in mediating discussions between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. ORLANDO — PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan praised Donald Trump for his involvement in talks between the Tour and LIV Golf, saying Tuesday he does not believe they would be in position to reunify without the president's assistance. "The dynamic he brings is he's the leader of the free world and he has an active interest in reunifying the game," Monahan said during an informal meeting with selected media two days before the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. "He's in an incredibly strong position to do so and his willingness to do so obviously changes the dynamic. I don't think we would have the cadence and we'd be in the position we're in to get a deal done but for the president." Monahan and Adam Scott, chairman of the PGA Tour's Player Advisory Council, traveled to the White House twice in February to meet with Trump to discuss ways for the Tour and LIV Golf to reach a settlement. Tiger Woods and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the head of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which finances LIV Golf, were present at the most recent meeting. These are the golf courses owned by Donald Trump President Donald Trump says PGA Tour-PIF deal is 'much more complicated' than solving Russia-Ukraine war "(I) was thankful for the president for his leadership, extremely thankful for his willingness to host us in the Oval Office, to help us continue with those conversations," Monahan said Tuesday. Still, Monahan stopped short of saying a deal is imminent. "If you look at his commentary last week, ultimately seeing a deal happening, Yasir Al-Rumayyan's comments about the good meeting that we had, we'll just continue to move forward in those conversations," he said. When Trump was elected in November, he said it would take him "the better part of 15 minutes" to get the two sides to unite once he got into the White House. Nearly two months and two face-to-face meetings later, negotiations that started 21 months ago continue. Donald Trump loves to golf Trump is an avid golfer and golf fan who continues to play even as the sitting president. He has spent several weekends since the inauguration playing at Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach while staying at Mar-a-Lago, his home on Palm Beach. "He's someone that absolutely loves the game of golf, he cares about the game of golf," Monahan said. Trump's allegiance recently has been with LIV, advocating for the league when it started in 2022. LIV has played several of its events at Trump properties, including Doral, which will host a LIV event for the fourth consecutive year in April. Trump has heavily criticized the PGA Tour in recent years, called the Tour "disloyal" and urged its players to "take the money now" and join LIV. He said the PGA Tour was "stupid," and even called for "something to happen" to its leadership, meaning Monahan. "The tour mishandled (LIV's formation) so badly and the people at the top, something should happen with them, they mishandled it so badly," he said during LIV's first event at Doral in 2022. President Donald Trump says PGA Tour-PIF deal is 'much more complicated' than solving Russia-Ukraine war
President Donald Trump says PGA Tour-PIF deal is 'much more complicated' than solving Russia-Ukraine war Before he was re-elected, President Donald Trump said it would take him 15 minutes to reunify men's professional golf. After a month in office, and plenty of meetings with the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund officials, his tone has drastically changed. Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Trump was asked what was going to be more challenging, the PGA Tour-LIV Golf deal or a Russia-Ukraine deal to stop the war in Eastern Europe. "I think the PGA deal is much more complicated," Trump said. Last week, Trump met with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, player directors Tiger Woods and Adam Scott and LIV Golf chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan in the White House, with the sides talking for about 4 hours about reunification and the future of men's professional golf. The PGA Tour put out a statement after the meeting calling it a "constructive working session," though ultimately it appears the sides are no closer to a deal than they were before meeting. Golfweek's Eamon Lynch reported Thursday's meeting at the White House didn't go as well as Tour executives had hoped. Despite recent efforts from the PGA Tour and its players, like Woods and Rory McIlroy playing golf with the President in recent weeks, to have Trump assist them in getting a deal completed, his latest comments about the difficulty in getting to the finish line are a stark contrast of what he said earlier this year and even from the tone those on the PGA Tour has in recent weeks.

PGA Tour-LIV Golf talks expected to heat up again with President Trump on Thursday
PGA Tour-LIV Golf talks expected to heat up again with President Trump on Thursday U.S. President Donald Trump, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and Public Investment Fund governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan are scheduled to meet in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, according to sources at Golfweek. Radar Atlas, which tracks private airplane travel, reported both the Tour's plane and Adam Scott's airplane both had arrived at Washington Dulles Airport on Wednesday evening. The PGA Tour's Monahan and player director Adam Scott went to the White House two weeks ago to meet with Trump and seek his support in striking a deal with the PIF, the sole benefactor of the breakaway LIV league. Woods also recently played a round of golf with Trump. Efforts to hash out a deal have dragged since a framework agreement was hastily announced on June 6, 2023. Woods, a Tour policy board member who is serving on the Transaction Sub-Committee, said on Sunday's broadcast of the Genesis Invitational that another meeting to discuss the reunification of PGA Tour and LIV Golf, as well as a potential investment from the Saudis in the PGA Tour, was imminent. When asked whether the feud could end this year or 'very soon,' Woods replied 'yes and yes,' and predicted that the game will 'heal very quickly.' A deal would enable the world's best players to compete against each other more often. One stumbling block has been whether the Department of Justice would approve such a deal, but Trump has indicated his administration will be more friendly to allowing a deal to be reached. 'I think we're in a very positive place right now. We had a meeting with the president. Unfortunately, I had some other circumstances that came up, but Jay and Adam, they did great during the meeting, and we have another subsequent meeting coming up,' Woods said. He continued: 'I think that things are going to heal quickly. We're going to get this game going in the right direction. It's been heading in the wrong direction for a number of years and the fans want all of us to play together, all the top players playing together and we're going to make that happen.'
