A virus nearly killed him; now, Brett White just shot 59 and won his first Americas title
Make that two 59s in as many days on PGA Tour Americas. This time it led to victory. Brett White began Sunday's final round of the Commissionaires Ottawa Open seven shots behind leader Philip Barbaree Jr., who had carded 13-under 59 a day earlier at Eagle Creek Golf Club. Now it was White's turn to break 60, and while Barbaree closed in 70 to tie for 10th, White rocketed to 23 under, which earned him a spot in a three-man playoff with Danny Fisher and Nathan Franks. White had made 10 birdies on his first 17 holes on Sunday before he drained a 63-foot eagle putt for the third 59 in PGA Tour Americas history. HOW ABOUT THIS FINISH FOR 59!! 🤯 @BWhitey08 drains a 63 foot eagle putt for 59 and has the clubhouse lead @OttawaOpenGolf at 26-under! Then in extras, White birdied the par-5 18th hole twice to seal his first career Americas title and jump to third in points. White, 32, is eight years removed from nearly dying from viral encephalitis, which he contracted while a member of PGA Tour Latinoamerica. He spent three weeks in the hospital and had to relearn basic tasks, including talking and walking. His return to golf came about a year after his hospitalization, and he won the 2019 Nevada Open and 2020 Michigan Open as part of his comeback. He got through Korn Ferry Tour Q-School in 2021 to earn his KFT card for 2022, though he notched just two top-25s in 20 starts to lose his status. 'It's been a wild ride,' White told Golf Channel in 2021. 'Over a long journey, sometimes you go back and go, wow, I gotta be thankful for where I'm at. There was a point in the hospital where it was, hey, let's make sure you can be on your own; and then it was, OK, I want to be able to run around with my kids; then it was, let's play golf for fun; and it just kept on progressing. I've tried to get better every day, and I don't think I've stopped.' The top 10 players at the end of the PGA Tour Americas season receive KFT cards.

Pro sinks long eagle putt to card 59, the second sub-60 round on PGA Tour Americas this week
Prior to Saturday, there had only ever been one 59 carded on the PGA Tour Americas. Now, on Sunday afternoon, there have been three. Brett White rolled in a 63-foot bomb for eagle on the par-5 18th at the aptly named Eagle Creek Golf Club in Ottawa, Ontario, during the final round of the Commissionaires Ottawa Open. The putt capped off a 8-under 28 on the back nine, culminating in the third 59 ever posted on the PGA Tour Americas. It might have been the third ever, but it was the second of the week. On Saturday, Philip Barbaree — who made headlines when he made the cut at the U.S. Open in an emotional moment with his wife, Chloe, on the bag — also fired a 59 at Eagle Creek. He did it in strikingly similar fashion to White, making eagle on the last to finish with a 28 on the inward nine.

Philip Barbaree fires first sub-60 score in PGA Tour Americas history
Philip Barbaree Jr.'s summer just got even better. About a month removed from qualifying for the U.S. Open and eventually finishing 66th at Oakmont, Barbaree fired the first sub-60 score in PGA Tour Americas history, a 13-under 59 Saturday at the Commissionaires Ottawa Open at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Ottawa. There were three sub-60 rounds prior to the merger of PGA Tour Canada and PGA Tour Latinoamerica – 58, Jason Bohn, 2001, Canadian Tour; 59, Greyson Sigg, 2019, PGA Tour Canada; 59, Drew Nesbitt, 2018, PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Barbaree's round included 11 birdies and an eagle, which came on his final hole, the par-5 18th. Barbaree closed birdie-birdie-eagle, and he'll enter Sunday at 20 under, which was good enough for the clubhouse lead. Barbaree entered the week 35th in the Fortinet Cup. There are seven tournaments remaining in the season, and the top 10 players in points at season's end will earn Korn Ferry Tour cards.

Korn Ferry employee receives sponsor exemption, shoots 91 in Korn Ferry Tour debut
A Korn Ferry employee made his Korn Ferry Tour debut on Thursday. Dan Massello, a 42-year-old from Chicago, carded par on his first hole of the NV5 Invitational at The Glen Club in Glenview, Illinois, but he'd record just two more pars the rest of the way, shooting 20-over 91. The tally included 10 bogeys and five double bogeys, though Massello avoided anything of triple or worse. Massello was worst in the morning wave by 17 shots and 29 shots behind leader Davis Chatfield. He was playing alongside fellow sponsor exemptions John Augenstein, a former All-American at Vanderbilt and the 2019 U.S. Amateur runner-up, and Charlie Nikitas, a Miami of Ohio product who has made eight starts on PGA Tour Americas this year. Augenstein and Nikitas shot 70 and 69, respectively. According to his Linkedin, Massello's current role with Korn Ferry is principal, finance and accounting, professional search. Prior to joining the consulting world in 2017, Massello was a PGA golf professional, including most recently the assistant pro at Evanston Golf Club in Skokie, Illinois, his bio stated. He also worked for nearly five years as a golf instructor for Northwestern's Wildcat Golf Academy. He played numerous Illinois Section PGA events from 2007 to 2016. His record shows mostly scores in the high 70s and a low score of 70 at the 2013 Ravinia Green CC Classic, a one-day tournament where Massello tied for first. Korn Ferry's official Instagram account wished Massello good luck on Wednesday: 'Good luck to Korn Ferry colleague Dan Massello as he tees off as our exemption pick on the @kornferrytour this week in Chicago! Just like in business, golf rewards those who seize opportunity, stay focused, and play beyond expectations. 'Go show them what 'Be More Than' looks like!' He tees off in Round 2 at 3:12 p.m. ET.
