Report: PGA Tour's Barracuda Championship could change dates or even lose title sponsor
The PGA Tour stop in Reno-Tahoe could be gone after this year, or changing dates to earlier in the year. The 2025 PGA Barracuda Championship will be held July 17-20 with live broadcast coverage on Golf Channel. But Josh Carpenter, who covers golf for Sports Business Journal, reported that two sources told him they do not expect the PGA Barracuda Tour stop to renew after this year. The Corrales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic would take its place on the PGA Tour calendar opposite the British Open. The tournament calendar website shows the Corales Puntacana being played July 16-19, 2026. This year, the Puntacana was played in April opposite the RBC Heritage. Carpenter's sources said if the Reno/Tahoe PGA Tour stop finds a sponsor before the schedule is officially released, it likely would move to June opposite the Traveler's Championship, traditionally played the week after the U.S. Open. In 2023, the PGA Tour announced that Barracuda Networks, Inc., had signed a multi-year extension as title sponsor of the Barracuda Championship. The tournament, which is recognized as a FedExCup event on the PGA Tour, has been held at Tahoe Mountain Club's Old Greenwood Golf Course in Truckee since 2020. The PGA Tour event started at Montreux Golf & Country Club in South Reno. The Barracuda Championship is the only PGA Tour event to use a Modified Stableford Scoring format, having done so since 2012. Barracuda Networks, a Silicon Valley based security company, took over as title sponsor in 2014 and extended its support of the tournament through 2025. Barracuda tournament director Chris Hoff did not respond to requests for comment. Rising stars at 2025 PGA Barracuda There are several player commitments for this summer's event, including Full Swing standout Joel Dahmen, who is joining the field after earning a top-10 finish at the PGA Championship. Also committing is Camilo Villegas, a four-time PGA Tour winner who's spent more than 30 weeks in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking. Erik van Rooyen, the 2021 Barracuda champion is back, as is Nick Dunlap, the defending champion. He was named the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year for 2024. Dunlap is the first player in Tour history to win as an amateur and a professional in the same season, and at age 20 was the youngest player to be named PGA Tour Rookie of the Year since Jordan Spieth in 2013. While the full PGA Tour schedule has yet to be released, the Rocket Classic will be moving back in the schedule. The new dates of July 30-Aug. 2 will push that tournament to after the British Open, which is scheduled for July 16-19 at Royal Birkdale in 2026. The PGA Tour typically releases the schedule for the upcoming year in the late summer or early fall. For the 2026 season, this would likely mean a release date sometime in August or September.

After Nick Dunlap shot a 90 at the Masters, social media had a field day
After Nick Dunlap shot a 90 at the Masters, social media had a field day Through 18 holes, Dunlap shot a brutal 18 over par at Augusta National Golf Club – bad enough to not only put him squarely in last place on the leaderboard, but 11 strokes away from anyone else. They say a bad day on the links is preferable to a good day at work, but what if golf is your work? Nick Dunlap, whose job is as a professional golfer, had a no-good, very bad day at work Thursday during the opening round of the Masters Tournament. Dunlap shot a brutal 18 over par at Augusta National Golf Club – bad enough to not only put him squarely in last place on the leaderboard, but 11 strokes away from anyone else. The dismal feat helped etch the 2024 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year a regrettable places in Masters history. Dunlap became just the 11th golfer to fail to break 90 in the first round of the famed major tournament and the first player who has failed to break 90 in 10 years. Naturally, social media had jokes. Who is Nick Dunlap? Dunlap, 21, is a two-time winner on the PGA Tour and considered one of the top young players in professional golf. The former University of Alabama golfer turned pro in 2024 after a stunning PGA Tour victory at The American Express. His win in January 2024 made him the first amateur in 33 years – and only the third since 1956 – to win on the PGA Tour, going back to Phil Mickelson in 1991. He was also the youngest amateur to win a PGA Tour event since 1910. The Huntsville, Alabama-native then picked up his second career PGA Tour victory in July 2024 at the Barracuda Championship. What happened during Dunlap's historically bad Masters round? It's a rarity for golfers in the prime of their professional career to fail to break 90 in the first round of the Masters Tournament. Dunlap on Thursday recorded seven bogeys, four doubles and a triple bogey. The highlight of his day came when he holed a 14-foot putt on No. 16 to avoid a triple bogey on an otherwise disastrous day. While Dunlap will tee off again Friday, he faces a near-impossible challenge making the cut to continue playing in the third and fourth round of the Masters. After Friday, only the top 50 players (plus ties) will move on to play again Saturday and Sunday. Heading into Friday's action, Dunlap was 15 strokes behind the projected cut line of +3. Dunlap is now among only four players who have shot 90 or above during a Masters round since 2000. That includes Ben Crenshaw (91, 2015), Tommy Aaron (92, 2000) and Doug Ford (94, 2000). The worst unofficial first-round score in Masters history belongs to Billy Casper, who shot 106 in the opening round of the 2005 Masters, but, perhaps wisely, did not sign his scorecard, excluding it from an official place in the record books. Social media users react to Nick Dunlap's Masters round While a poor round for a professional golfer, Dunlap's Thursday performance was perfectly average for many hobbyist golfers who hit the links on the weekend. For that reason, news of Dunlap's score prompted plenty of "one of us" jokes on social media. pointed out that Dunlap's final score for the opening round was even more surprising considering he never once had to three-putt on 18 holes. But Dylan Dethier, a writer for Golf Magazine, gave Dunlap some credit for finishing the round and not withdrawing. Fore Play, a golf podcast hosted by Barstool Sports, also acknowledged the obvious: "The Masters is hard." Users commenting on a post shared by Ways to Golf had plenty of humorous insights to shared, with one person dubbing Dunlap "The People's Champion," and another noting "this shows you that an average golfer would shoot 180." Nick Dunlap signs one-match deal with Atlanta Drive
February 28 - Nick Dunlap signed a one-match contract with TGL on Friday to fill in for short-handed Atlanta Drive GC. The reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year will compete against Jupiter Links on Tuesday. Atlanta's Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay are both unavailable next week. Palm Beach County is truly living up to its moniker as the Golf Capital of the World in February. The new indoor TGL golf league will feature Rory McIlroy's Boston team playing Monday and Tiger Woods' Jupiter team playing Tuesday. Two days later, PGA Tour's Cognizant Classic returns for its annual four-day extravaganza at the Champion Course at PGA National. Both venues are in Palm Beach Gardens. But before the indoor golf and a PGA Tour events take place next week, a national miniature golf tournament with local athletes, celebrities, media influencers and golfers of all skill levels will be rolled out Thursday evening at the West Palm Beach PopStroke, 2429 Perimeter Road. The PopStroke Invitational will feature a one-night competitive putting championship with a purse of $150,000 that will feature both team and individual categories. Among those who are scheduled to participate: Nick Dunlap: PGA Tour Rookie of the Year (2024) and one of golf's brightest rising stars. The shotgun start on the Black and Blue courses begins at 6:30 p.m. and the champion is expected to be crowned around 9:30 p.m. In the team competition, the top spot earns $100,000 (a $50,000 split) with $30,000 going to the runner-up and $10,000 for third. The new venue, adjacent to Palm Beach International Airport, opened its two 18-hole miniature golf courses in December. Spanning more than 20,000 square feet across two stories, the location also features a full-service restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining and party areas, an ice cream parlor, multiple bars with expansive TVs and jumbotrons throughout the property, an outdoor patio gaming area and beer garden and a fully enclosed children's playground. Officials would like to see the event be an annual occurrence at the West Palm Beach location, which is a signature venue. It is the third time the company has put on the miniature golf tournament. The first one came in 2022 in Sarasota and featured PGA Tour player Rickie Fowler and LPGA Tour player Paula Creamer. The inaugural tournament, which was televised on the Golf Channel, featured two competitions for a combined purse of $125,000. The team championship attracted 200 two-man teams, from as far away Sweden.
