Spencer Horwitz clubs 2 Homers; Pirates fend off Rockies after flirting with another disaster

After Spencer Horwitz's second home run of the game gave the Pirates a seven-run lead on Sunday, the Rockies hit back-to-back-to-back home runs, but Pittsburgh held on this time 9-5 to salvage the series at Coors Field. Nick Gonzales plated the first run of the game with an infield single in the top of the first. Later in the inning, Tommy Pham put the Pirates (48-64) ahead 3-0 with a 446-foot two-run homer to center. In the second inning, Spencer Horwitz extended the lead to 5-0 with a two-run homer, his first of two on the game. Horwitz belted a three-run home run with two outs in the sixth to put Pittsburgh ahead 8-1. Pirates starter Mitch Keller held the Rockies (30-81) to one run through five innings before Mickey Moniak (two-run), Hunter Goodman and Jordan Beck hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the bottom of the sixth. Pittsburgh Pirates trade closer David Bednar to Yankees
This article originally appeared on The Pittsburgh Pirates have swung their first big deal on deadline day, trading closing pitcher David Bednar to the New York Yankees, a source confirmed to Pittsburgh Baseball Now. In return, the Pirates are acquiring a trio of prospects — catcher/first baseman Rafael Flores, catcher/first baseman Edgleen Perez and outfielder Brian Sanchez. The deal is pending medical reviews. Bednar, a Pittsburgh-native, has spent the last five seasons with the Pirates after he was acquired from the San Diego Padres in the 2020-21 offseason. Pirates push winning streak to five, hang on to sweep Giants
This article originally appeared on The Pittsburgh Pirates pushed their winning streak to five games on Wednesday, July 30, sweeping the San Francisco Giants in a 2-1 extra-innings win. Despite playing with a short bullpen after trading left-handed reliever Caleb Ferguson to the Mariners midway through the game, Carmen Mlodzinski and Isaac Mattson each stepped up for two scoreless innings in relief. Mike Burrows got the start, striking out seven batters on 91 pitches and allowing just one run in six innings. Oneil Cruz began the tenth inning on second as the inherited baserunner, taking third and scoring on groundouts from Nick Gonzales and Henry Davis, respectively to put the Pirates in front. Mattson allowed a leadoff base hit on a ball Jack Suwinski missed in left field, but the lead runner didn't advance on a play that seemed destined for an out. A bunt moved the runners over, but Mattson escaped with consecutive strikeouts. Before the late game heroics, San Francisco opened a 1-0 lead against Burrows with three singles in the fourth inning. The advantage lasted all of three pitches, as Isiah Kiner-Falefa singled and Spencer Horwitz doubled to open the fifth.
