Kanlaon Volcano had 4 volcanic quakes —PHIVOLCS
Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island is still under Alert Level 3. PHIVOLCS/File Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island had four volcanic earthquakes on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said. The volcano also emitted 5,324 tonnes of sulfur dioxide in the 24-hour period from 12 a.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Saturday, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin. Voluminous plumes rising up from the crater to 900 meters tall were observed, indicating continuous degassing. The plumes drifted south and southeast. PHIVOLCS said the volcano's edifice remains inflated. Alert Level 3 (Intensified Unrest/Magmatic Unrest) remains in effect at Kanlaon Volcano, which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. The six-kilometer radius from the volcano's summit should remain evacuated, PHIVOLCS said. Flying aircraft close to the volcano should not be allowed, it added. PHIVOLCS said Kanlaon Volcano poses possible hazards: sudden explosive eruption, lava flow or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density current (PDC), rockfall, and lahars during heavy rains. On Friday, PHIVOLCS advised residents near Kanlaon Volcano to be vigilant following social media posts of "cohesive and cement-like lahars" that may have been generated by moderate to heavy rainfall in the area. Netizens and local officials along the Buhangin River and beneath Hacienda 92 Bridge in Barangay Sag-ang and Ibid Creek in Barangay Biak-na-bato, La Castellana, Negros Occidental reported the occurrence of cohesive and cement-like lahars in their areas. The rains brought about by the Southwest Monsoon may generate lahars, muddy steamflows or muddy run-off in the rivers draining the Kanlaon Volcano edifice, particularly areas previous affected by lahars, PHIVOLCS said. "Lahars can threaten communities along the middle and lower slopes with inundation, burial and wash out," it added. "PHIVOLCS thus strongly recommends increased vigilance and readiness of communities along rivers draining southern Kanlaon. These communities and local government units are advised to continually monitor weather conditions and take pre-emptive response measures when heavy rains, the only early-warning for lahars, are expected or have begun over the upper slopes of Kanlaon Volcano, for their safety," the agency said. —KG, GMA Integrated News

PHIVOLCS issues Kanlaon lahar advisory following rainfall in the area
The Philippine Institute of of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) called for vigilance among residents near Kanlaon volcano following social media posts of "cohesive and cement-like lahars" that may have generated by moderate to heavy rainfall in the area. "Based on the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Regional Weather Advisory No. 2, the Negros Island Region has been under the effects of a Low Pressure Area (LPA) and the Southwest Monsoon," the PHIVOLCS said. "Furthermore, based on PAGASA's Heavy Rainfall Warning No. 2 #VISPRSD, moderate to heavy rainfall in the late afternoon to early evening affected portions of Kanlaon Volcano, generating channel-confined volcanic sediment flows or lahars on the southern and southwestern slopes," the agency added. The All-Weather Station of the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory in La Carlota City recorded a total of 45.5 mm of rain over a 3.5-hour period and higher rainfall volume may occurr around the summit of the volcano. The PHIVOLCS said cohesive and cement-like lahars has been reported by netizens and local officials along the Buhangin River and beneath Hacienda 92 Bridge in Barangay Sag-ang and Ibid Creek in Barangay Biak-na-bato, La Castellana, Negros Occidental. The rains brought about by the southwest monsoon may generate lahars, muddy steamflows or muddy run-off in the rivers draining the Kanlaon vocano edifice, particularly areas previous affected by lahars. PHIVOLCS warns, "Lahars can threaten communities along the middle and lower slopes with inundation, burial and wash out." "PHIVOLCS thus strongly recommends increased vigilance and readiness of communities along rivers draining southern Kanlaon. These communities and local government units are advised to continually monitor weather conditions and take pre-emptive response measures when heavy rains, the only early-warning for lahars, are expected or have begun over the upper slopes of Kanlaon Volcano, for their safety," the agency said. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

Ash emission event on Mount Kanlaon recorded anew
An ash emission event was recorded anew on Mount Kanlaon. Based on a footage of an Internet Protocol (IP) camera of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the ash emission event lasted for about 30 minutes on June 2, 2025. The ash emission event generated a grayish plume that reached a height of 1,200 meters. The emission was described by PHIVOLCS to be thin this time, and reached a few barangays in Bago City. 'Sa upper portion ng ating bulkan, meron na namang pag-clog ang ating volcano kung saan dumadaan ang gas na ini-emit ng magma,' said Engr. Mari Andylene Quintia, resident volcanologist at Kanlaon Volcano Observatory. At least 38 volcanic earthquakes were recorded, which makes the possibility of another eruption likely, according to PHIVOLCS. The latest ash emission event happened almost a year after a phreatic eruption on Mount Kanlaon occurred on June 3, 2024 at past 6 p.m. The Office of Civil Defense - Negros Island Region (OCD-NIR) has sent an Incident Management Team to inspect persons getting in and out of the six-kilometer expanded danger zone on Mount Kanlaon. Another situation that the team will look into is the preparation at the evacuation centers for the resumption of classes by June 16, 2025. Based on OCD-NIR data, close to 2,000 students are affected by the volcanic unrest and have continued to stay at evacuation centers in the Province of Negros Occidental. Most of these students are in the Municipality of La Castellana. To pad disruption of classes, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of La Castellana has requested for additional family tents that will serve as temporary classrooms. 'Nagwo-worry na naman sila kung papano ang enrollment ng mga bata. Ang mga LGUs natin naghahanap rin ng pamamaraan upang ma-address ito,' Donato Sermeno III, regional director of OCD-NIR, said. DepEd Negros Occidental has considered alternative learning mode for students and a once-a-week face-to-face classes for students dwelling in evacuation centers. — GMA Regional TV News

PHIVOLCS satisfied with public's earthquake awareness
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) expressed satisfaction that more people are knowledgeable about earthquake response in the wake of the magnitude 4.6 temblor that hit Quezon Province on Tuesday. In Chino Gaston's report on '24 Oras,' MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2 operations were temporarily halted as the earthquake was also felt in some parts of Metro Manila past noon. Train tracks were inspected before the resumption of operations. After the earthquake, employees in the Senate, Malacañang, House of Representatives, Commission on Elections, and the Department of Justice were seen calmly evacuating. According to PHIVOLCS, the earthquake's epicenter was located 25 kilometers from General Nakar, Quezon. It lasted for seconds. There have also been no reported casualties or damaged properties so far. 'Ang source po nito ay tectonic. So, may gumalaw po na fault. (The source is tectonic. A fault moved, but we do not know which fault. We can call this a local fault, meaning it is local to the area. It is not related to the movement of other faults.) PHIVOLCS said it is pleased that more people are aware of what to do during an earthquake. 'Mahalaga po dito ang ating mga paghahanda, lalo na ang pakikilahok po natin sa mga earthquake drills upang at least aware po tayo kung ano ang nararapat natin gawin kung sakaling magkakaroon ng isang malakas na lindol. Kailangan natin masigurado na yung ating mga built structures, halimbawa po bahay, buildings, mga hospitals, ito po ay sound po. Ibig sabihin matibay sumunod po sa building code,' Sevilla said. (It's important to prepare, especially in participating in the earthquake drills to at least be aware of what to do should there be an earthquake. We also need to ensure that our structures are sound, sturdy, and follow the building code.) The Office of Civil Defense has been preparing for a strong earthquake, or the Big One, that may affect the eastern section of Metro Manila once there is a massive movement in the West Valley Fault. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/LDF, GMA Integrated News
