PHIVOLCS: 1 phreatomagmatic eruption, 6 volcanic quakes in Taal Volcano
Photo of the minor phreatomagmatic eruptive events recorded at the Taal Main Crater on Thursday, July 17, 2025. PHIVOLCS A phreatomagmatic eruption event and six volcanic earthquakes, including five volcanic tremors, have been recorded in Taal Volcano on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Friday. In its bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the phreatomagmatic eruption event lasted up to 12 minutes, while the volcanic earthquakes lasted two to six minutes. A weak emission of plumes reaching up to 400 meters tall was also observed from Taal Volcano, drifting southeast. Also, a long-term deflation of the Taal Caldera and short-term inflation of the southeastern flank of the Taal Volcano Island were observed. Taal Volcano emitted 504 tonnes of sulfur dioxide gas on Tuesday. The temperature in the Main Crater Lake was at 68.7 degrees Celsius as of April 15, while the acidity level in the same area was at 0.3 as of February 19. Missing sabungeros Taal Volcano had an eruption on Thursday amid the continuing search and retrieval operations at Taal Lake for the remains of missing cockfight enthusiasts or sabungeros. In a press conference, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said authorities will heed PHIVOLCS' advisory on whether or not it is safe to proceed with the search. Asked if the search operations will be halted due to the minor phreatic eruption at the Taal Volcano, Remulla said, "Well, pag hindi healthy—kung ito ay magiging balakid sa health ng tao tigil muna. PHIVOLCS will advise us kung ano, kung safe or hindi," he said. (Well, if it's not healthy—if this will be detrimental to people's health—then we stop for now. PHIVOLCS will advise us on what to do, whether it's safe or not.) —VAL, GMA Integrated News

No damage from magnitude 5.5 quake in Northern Luzon
No damage has been reported, so far, from the magnitude 5.5 earthquake that shook parts of Northern Luzon late morning on July 15, 2025. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the quake struck at 10:38 a.m. with its epicenter in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte. It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 43 kilometers. Closed circuit television (CCTV) footage from a store in Pasuquin showed products falling off shelves and parked motorcycles swaying during the quake. In another video taken at a construction site in Ilocos Norte, workers were seen climbing down slowly from the upper floors of a building as the tremor hit. In San Juan, Ilocos Sur, store items were also seen shaking slightly during the quake. The quake was felt strongly in several areas, with these reported intensities: Intensity V in Bacarra, Laoag City, Pasuquin, and Vintar (Ilocos Norte); Cabugao, Sinait, and Vigan City (Ilocos Sur) in Bacarra, Laoag City, Pasuquin, and Vintar (Ilocos Norte); Cabugao, Sinait, and Vigan City (Ilocos Sur) Intensity IV in Batac City, Paoay, and San Nicolas (Ilocos Norte); and parts of Ilocos Sur in Batac City, Paoay, and San Nicolas (Ilocos Norte); and parts of Ilocos Sur Weaker intensities were felt in parts of Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Cagayan, and Isabela. No tsunami threat from Davao Occidental quake —PHIVOLCS
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Saturday said there is no tsunami threat following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that occurred offshore Davao Occidental. "No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake," PHIVOLCS said in its Tsunami Information No. 1. "However, earthquakes of this size may generate unusual sea level disturbances that may be observed along coasts near earthquake epicenter of Davao Occidental and nearby provinces," it added. The magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck at 7:07 a.m. in the waters off Sarangani Island in the municipality of Sarangani in Davao Occidental. The quake had a depth of 10 km and was tectonic in origin. Kanlaon Volcano had 4 volcanic quakes —PHIVOLCS
Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island is still under Alert Level 3. PHIVOLCS/File Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island had four volcanic earthquakes on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said. The volcano also emitted 5,324 tonnes of sulfur dioxide in the 24-hour period from 12 a.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Saturday, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin. Voluminous plumes rising up from the crater to 900 meters tall were observed, indicating continuous degassing. The plumes drifted south and southeast. PHIVOLCS said the volcano's edifice remains inflated. Alert Level 3 (Intensified Unrest/Magmatic Unrest) remains in effect at Kanlaon Volcano, which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. The six-kilometer radius from the volcano's summit should remain evacuated, PHIVOLCS said. Flying aircraft close to the volcano should not be allowed, it added. PHIVOLCS said Kanlaon Volcano poses possible hazards: sudden explosive eruption, lava flow or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density current (PDC), rockfall, and lahars during heavy rains. On Friday, PHIVOLCS advised residents near Kanlaon Volcano to be vigilant following social media posts of "cohesive and cement-like lahars" that may have been generated by moderate to heavy rainfall in the area. Netizens and local officials along the Buhangin River and beneath Hacienda 92 Bridge in Barangay Sag-ang and Ibid Creek in Barangay Biak-na-bato, La Castellana, Negros Occidental reported the occurrence of cohesive and cement-like lahars in their areas. The rains brought about by the Southwest Monsoon may generate lahars, muddy steamflows or muddy run-off in the rivers draining the Kanlaon Volcano edifice, particularly areas previous affected by lahars, PHIVOLCS said. "Lahars can threaten communities along the middle and lower slopes with inundation, burial and wash out," it added. "PHIVOLCS thus strongly recommends increased vigilance and readiness of communities along rivers draining southern Kanlaon. These communities and local government units are advised to continually monitor weather conditions and take pre-emptive response measures when heavy rains, the only early-warning for lahars, are expected or have begun over the upper slopes of Kanlaon Volcano, for their safety," the agency said. —KG, GMA Integrated News
