SMK Taman Sri Muda toilets being fixed, says assemblyman
PETALING JAYA: The toilets at SMK Taman Sri Muda are being fixed, says Kota Kemuning assemblyman Preakas Sampunathan. Commenting following a viral social media post by a person claiming to be a 16-year-old student of the school, he said that the repair works will address water supply issues. The student tagged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the post urging action, as the toilets had no water for five to six months. 'I want to report my school toilets; there's no water for at least 5-6 months. It's so smelly I go back home to urinate,' the student wrote on Threads. She also claimed that menstruating female students had to go home as the school toilets were dirty and had no water. When contacted by The Star, Preakas said he had checked with the school. 'I was told the PIBG (Parent-Teacher Association) is repairing and the issue will be resolved by tomorrow (Aug 10),' he said. The school said there is water supply but the pressure is low. 'Further, the district education office inspected the toilets yesterday (Aug 8),' he added. In March, broken toilets at SK Long Jaafar in Kamunting, Perak were fixed within two days following a pupil's complaint to Anwar. The pupil told Anwar during his visit to the Ramadan bazaar in Kamunting that two toilets were broken and two were usable on March 14.

Flag mix-up at PD school was honest mistake by disabled worker, says Lukut rep
SEREMBAN, Aug 5 — A person with a disability (PwD) mistakenly put up the Jalur Gemilang flag upside down at a school in Port Dickson, said Lukut state assemblyman Choo Ken Hwa. Choo said he had personally visited the school on the day of the incident. He clarified that the headmaster had assigned a PwD worker, who had mistakenly used an old flag, put it up, and left. After being informed, the flag was taken down within two hours. 'This was not intentional. Please avoid spreading this incident or accusing the school of lacking patriotism,' Choo said during the Negeri Sembilan state legislative assembly sitting today. He also urged the public not to escalate the matter further, noting that the school management had already issued an apology. Yesterday, the management of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Chung Hua Port Dickson publicly apologised for the incident, which occurred last Friday. In a joint statement, the school administration and the Parents-Teachers Association (PIBG) expressed regret, calling the incident an unintentional mistake. Port Dickson police chief Supt Maslan Udin confirmed that a 30-year-old local man had been identified to assist with the investigation into the case. — Bernama

Anti-bullying must start at home: Redonah
Published on: Sunday, August 03, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 By: Patimang Abdul Ghani Text Size: Redonah (centre) observing the students' activities at the school during the Family Day event. KOTA MARUDU: There should be no excuse for bullying, especially in schools and institutions of higher learning, said Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Datuk Redonah Bahanda. She said the issue cannot be taken lightly, as some victims have committed suicide and even murdered. 'As a mother, in our country, unlike some others with caste systems, we are all equal. There should be no concept of 'who you are' or 'whose child you are.' This is unacceptable.' 'Power isn't meant to oppress anyone. The awareness and education to prevent bullying need to start at home, with parents making sure their kids understand what bullying is, how to avoid bullying others, and how to stay safe from being bullied.' 'All parties must also play a role in working together to ensure that bullying does not occur, strive to create a caring and attentive environment, and report to the authorities if any bullying is observed, especially in schools,' she said at the PIBG Family Day 2025 event at SK Kota Marudi II. 'Every time I visit schools, whether primary, secondary, or institutions of higher learning, I remind them about bullying cases. Early awareness, especially among students and our children, must begin at home.' 'I teach my child to speak up and report any signs, whether words or anything else, even the smallest matters. Bullying often begins with something small that is left unaddressed.' Redonah also reminded parents to focus on religious teaching, teach their kids to be polite, value their friends, and grow up with good values like kindness and care. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
