KDN to probe, mull stern action to erroneous infographic on new IGP

PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry (KDN) will investigate a recent erroneous infographic on the 15th Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, published by a local Malay daily. Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the ministry will look into the matter from all angles, including potential legal action or direct engagement with the media involved. 'If necessary, we will summon them for clarification and take the opportunity to convey how false and irresponsible reporting can have serious implications. 'However, any action taken should not be construed as the government undermining media freedom,' he told reporters after attending the ministry's monthly assembly today. While expressing strong regret over the report, which claimed that the IGP was a member of the PKR Central Leadership Council, Saifuddin also described the mistake as serious, as it involved the reputation of the highest-ranking officer in the country's largest enforcement agency. 'The facts presented were obviously incorrect. The biodata profile included all of Datuk Seri Khalid's past experiences, with an apparent intention to insert misleading information, despite the police having already issued an official and verified profile,' he said. The minister stressed that an established media outlet should understand journalistic discipline, especially the obligation to verify facts, all the more crucial when reporting on a senior police officer with decades of service. 'Surely some effort should have been made to verify the facts. At a time when political divisions and hate sentiments are intensifying, such irresponsible reporting is like wildfire in a dry season,' he said. Saifuddin also criticised the media outlet's casual explanation that the error was unintentional, saying it failed to acknowledge the significant consequences. 'How do they intend to contain a viral wildfire that fuels hatred? What choice do we have? If we take stern action, then our MADANI Government will be accused of being a government that disrespects media freedom. 'But freedom must include the responsibility to report verified facts, not to spread lies that erode public trust in the police institution and tarnish the reputation of the new IGP. The consequences are substantial,' he said. On June 20, the media outlet in question published an infographic linking the IGP to the PKR leadership, which caused widespread public confusion. Following the backlash, the outlet issued an apology and suspended the staff involved in producing the infographic.

Nurul Izzah: Deputy president's role key to supporting Anwar's national agenda

KUALA LUMPUR: The role of PKR deputy president has become more critical as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who also leads the party, shoulders the heavy responsibility of steering the nation through an era of uncertainty. Newly-elected party deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar said Anwar holds this position amid ongoing global power struggles, including the United States-China trade war. "In such a time, the role of deputy president becomes even more critical to strengthen the party and ensure our internal governance remains firmly on track, allowing the president to fully focus on national administration," she said in a Facebook post today. Among her first initiatives, Nurul Izzah said she would introduce a universal programme for all party divisions, a comprehensive effort to empower grassroots machinery. She said the programme would focus on expanding the support base, adopting effective strategies to reach the people, and identifying the best ways to assist communities in their respective constituencies. "We must not let our warriors go into battle without strength. "We will ensure that every general and warrior of the party, from the branches to the central leadership, is equipped with sufficient strength, knowledge, resources and fighting spirit to face the upcoming political battlefield," she said. Nurul Izzah said victory is not a moment for celebration or complacency, but a call to action, and a time to double efforts, go to the ground, listen, and return to the real battleground. "I step forward not with pride, but with a deep sense of responsibility, fully aware that every vote is a trust, and every trust demands real work. "Let us rebuild this strength. If there are cracks, let us mend them. If there is distance, let us close it. "Together, we can bring about genuine reform from the heart, for the people. "I speak on behalf of everyone, whether you voted for me or for Rafizi (Ramli, former PKR deputy president), let us honour this mandate," she said. In the PKR Central Leadership Council race on Friday, Nurul Izzah was elected as the party's new deputy president with 9,803 votes, defeating incumbent Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli.

Dr Zaliha: The PKR Central Leadership Council election results as early as 9pm tomorrow

JOHOR BARU: The results of the PKR Central Leadership Council election are expected to be announced as early as 9pm tomorrow. PKR election committee chairman Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the announcement may be made following the keynote address by party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the 2025 PKR National Congress. "We aim to announce the results shortly after the president's speech, depending on the situation at the time. "If the speech concludes smoothly, we will announce the results as soon as possible, provided all technical issues are resolved," she said during a media briefing held in conjunction with the congress here today. Also present were the party's secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh, information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, and Discipline Board chairman Datuk Ahmad Kasim. Meanwhile, Fuziah said a total of 251 candidates are contesting in the PKR central election for the 2025–2028 term. She said this number includes 104 nominations for the Central Leadership Council, 85 candidates for the Youth Leadership Council, and 62 candidates for the Wanita Leadership Council. "A total of 22,809 delegates will vote to elect the Central Leadership Council, comprising 13,060 online voters and 9,829 physical voters. "Of this number, 6,990 delegates will be present in Johor Baru, while 1,120 and 919 will vote physically in Sabah and Sarawak respectively," she said. She added that physical voting for delegates attending the congress will take place at the Berjaya Waterfront Hotel and the Danga Bay Convention Centre here.
