Mysuru set for major upgrade in healthcare services
Mysuru's medical infrastructure is witnessing a major expansion with new public healthcare facilities being established to benefit not only the residents of Mysuru, but also patients from neighbouring districts. The PKTB campus on KRS Road is emerging as a major healthcare hub, thanks to the availability of land for new establishments. In the last one decade, almost all the new public healthcare facilities have come up on the vast campus. Sri Jayadeva Institute, District Hospital, Super Speciality Hospital, and Trauma Care Centre are operating in the campus. Among the new facilities for which foundation stones were laid recently are the Institute of Nephro-Urology, and a Regional Endocrinology Centre, which are expected to improve healthcare services in the region. While the Institute of Nephro-Urology and Endocrinology Centre are State funded (₹75 crore and ₹50 crore respectively), the Critical Care Block, which is also coming up on the PKTB campus, is a facility with funding from the Centre and State in a 60-40 ratio. The foundation stones for the Nephro-Urology Hospital, which presently functions in the campus of K.R. Hospital in the city, and the Endocrinology Centre were laid by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah here recently. The Urology Institute will be a six-storied facility with 100 beds, while the Critical Care Block will be a three-storied unit. All the new facilities are attached to the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI). MMCRI Director and Dean K.R. Dakshayani said the new facilities will improve public healthcare services and thanked the State government for approving the projects proposed by the institute. The Critical Care Block is coming up at a cost of ₹16 crore. It primarily looks into cases of head injuries, she said, adding that the PKTB campus already has a Trauma Care Centre that mainly handles orthopaedic and neurology-related cases. Mr. Dakshayani said that cases of hormonal imbalances, gland issues, thyroid problems, and diabetes are treated by the Endocrinology Centre. In view of the rise in cases related to endocrinology and diabetes, patients will benefit once the new facility becomes operational. Besides Mysuru, the Regional Endocrinology Centre is also coming up in Kalaburagi at a cost of ₹100 crore. The centre in Mysuru will be established in MMCRI and be part of the DME. Karnataka Institute of Endocrinology and Research, which serves as the main centre in Bengaluru, and the upcoming centres in Mysuru and Kalaburagi can function as its branches, the doctors said here. The MMCRI Dean said the work on the Centenary OPD Complex is expected to start soon once the old special ward building is demolished. The four-storied block is coming up at a cost of ₹75 crore; it is a project approved in memory of the centenary celebrations of the MMCRI, he added. The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for the peripheral cancer care centre on the PKTB campus here recently. It is coming up at a cost of ₹50 crore.

Nephrology unit in Mysuru to get permanent hospital infrastructure
Mysuru: The nephrology unit, established eight years ago by the Institute of Nephro Urology (INU) on the KR Hospital premises, is set to get a dedicated hospital building. The state govt has sanctioned Rs 117.7 crore for the construction of a permanent nephrology hospital on the PKTB hospital premises. With the govt's approval, the building will soon be constructed on a five-acre plot on the PKTB hospital campus on KRS Road in the city. The establishment of this centre will help 69,000 kidney patients avail dialysis, facilitate kidney transplants, and address other health disorders. The unit on the KR Hospital premises was the second state-run, full-fledged nephrology unit set up by the govt, after Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru, for the benefit of kidney patients from Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Madikeri, and other adjoining districts. The aim is to reduce pressure on the nephrology unit of Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru and to provide dialysis and other treatments to patients suffering from kidney-related ailments from Mysuru and adjoining districts. As chief minister Siddaramaiah is keen on establishing a permanent building for the unit, he sanctioned Rs 117.7 crore after making necessary budget announcements in 2025-26. The process of constructing permanent buildings for INU has gained momentum on the PKTB hospital premises adjacent to the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research Institute in Kumbara Koppal on KRS Road in the city. Speaking to TOI, dean and director of Mysuru Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI), Dr KH Daskshayini, said MMCRI has already provided five acres for the establishment of this unit on the PKTB premises. "As the funds were released after necessary administrative and financial approval, the foundation stone was unveiled by the CM at the recently held Sadhana Samavesha at Maharaja's College grounds in Mysuru. The initial stage of construction work for this building has been expedited by the engineering section of the state health and family welfare department," she said. This 100-bed hospital will have 50 beds exclusively to provide dialysis treatment for kidney patients at different timings, 20 ICU beds, four modular surgical treatment blocks, a digital library, parking facilities, restrooms for patients, and several other facilities, she said. Dr JB Narendra, chief of the INU Mysuru unit, said the establishment of this facility will significantly benefit patients in Mysuru and surrounding areas who require dialysis or are dealing with kidney-related issues. With the number of such patients steadily increasing, the new unit will play a vital role in delivering effective and timely treatment.
