Install solar rooftop systems, people urged
Raptadu: MLA Paritala Sunitha and TDP leader Paritala Sriram have urged the people of Chennekothapalli, Ramagiri and Kanaganapalli mandals to take the lead in installing solar rooftop systems on their homes, setting an example for the rest of the state. The awareness event on the 'PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana' and solar rooftop construction was held at Nagasamudram Gate in Chennekothapalli mandal. The event was organised by the Electricity Department at the ADE office, with participation from Sriram, SE Sampath Kumar, solar company representatives, bank officials, TDP leaders and the public. A demonstration was set up to showcase how solar rooftops work, their costs, government subsidies, bank loans and the resulting benefits. Speaking on the occasion, Paritala Sriram said he was proud that the initiative was starting from the Raptadu constituency in Sri Sathya Sai district. He explained that while solar panels were once limited to agricultural projects, now every household can generate its own electricity and even sell surplus power to the government, significantly reducing electricity bills. He praised Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for encouraging such advanced technology, saying the CM not only delivers political speeches but also acts like a responsible head of the family, guiding people toward practical, beneficial solutions. MLA Paritala Sunitha emphasised that the initiative would begin in their constituency, and they were committed to leading any programme that benefits the public. She recalled how rising electricity bills once made even small lighting a concern for the poor. The PM Surya Ghar scheme addresses this by allowing rooftop solar installations, offering up to Rs 60,000 in subsidies, with full coverage for SC/ST households and an additional Rs 20,000 subsidy for BCs from the State government.

50% of India's energy is from non-fossil fuel sources, five years ahead of target: Centre
ia has achieved 50% of its installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, five years ahead of target set in the Nationally Determined Contributions, the government of India announced on July 14. As of June 30, India's total installed electricity capacity was 484.82 gigawatts, comprising 242.04 GW (49.9%) from thermal energy sources and 242.78 GW (50.1%) from non-fossil sources, including renewables, large hydro and nuclear power. At the COP26 climate conference in 2021, India had announced its goal of achieving 50% of its cumulative electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel resources by 2030, under its Nationally Determined Contributions targets. Other goals include installing 500 gigawatts of non-fossil electricity capacity, reducing projected carbon emissions by one billion tonnes, and reducing the emissions intensity of its gross domestic product by 45%, also by 2030. In response to the announcement of achieving 50% capacity through non-fossil fuel sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), 'This illustrates India's commitment and efforts towards building a green and sustainable future.' The press release announcing the achievement lists government schemes that have played a role in achieving the 50% goal. 'This achievement reflects the success of visionary policy design, bold implementation, and the country's deep commitment to equity and climate responsibility. Flagship programmes such as PM-KUSUM, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, solar park development, and the National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy have laid a strong foundation for this transformation,' it said. The press release noted that these initiatives have not only helped in decarbonising energy sector but have also delivered widespread co-benefits which include enhanced energy access, employment generation, reduced air pollution and better public health outcomes. It also underlined India's low per capita energy consumption and its relatively limited contribution to global emissions. 'Despite having one of the lowest per capita emissions globally, India remains among the few G20 countries that are on track to meet – or even exceed – their NDC commitments,' the release said. 'The next phase of India's energy transition must prioritise quality, equity, and resilience in clean energy access. Key focus areas include doubling per capita clean electricity consumption,' according to the press release. India is supposed to submit its new and more ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions in 2025.

Govt tightens cybersecurity norms for inverters used in rooftop solar scheme
Amid cybersecurity threats emanating from China, the Union new and renewable energy ministry has mandated all original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) supplying inverters under the 'PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana' to connect their inverters to the ministry's national servers and software platform. The ministry will notify the date for implementation of the directive. In a notification, the ministry said that the integration of 10 million rooftop solar systems under the scheme would also introduce challenges regarding grid stability and cybersecurity concerns. It added that inverter communication modules that transmit data to servers outside India not only pose risks of unauthorized control but also threaten national energy sovereignty by exposing sensitive power consumption and generation data. 'All OEMs enlisted for supplying inverters under the PMSG: MBY scheme shall mandatorily connect their inverters directly to national servers and software managed by the ministry or any other agency designated by the ministry, with effect from the date to be notified,' it said. Inverters are essential components of solar energy systems, as they convert the direct current (DC) generated by solar panels into alternating current (AC) that can be used by homes and businesses. They also facilitate the interaction between solar energy systems and the electrical grid, allowing the transmission of excess energy back into the grid. The ministry held multiple rounds of deliberations with stakeholders to implement a framework to track the generation benefits of rooftop solar installations. The discussions also deliberated over centralization of rooftop solar data on a national software platform hosted on servers located in India and managed by the ministry or any other government agency, in a bid to ensure effective monitoring of millions of inverters aggregating large capacity and ensure grid security and stability. The government has also mandated that all inverter communication devices, or dongles, or data loggers deployed under the scheme shall have machine-to-machine (M2M) SIM communication protocol to enable a secure and reliable data transmission. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has been under implementation since February 2024, and as of 15 July, over 1,545,000 households have been covered under the scheme. Under the scheme, government plans to install rooftop solar systems on 10 million houses and add 30GW of solar power capacity. The developments come in the backdrop of undocumented communication equipment found inside some Chinese-made inverter devices in May, raising security concerns. In the past few years, the government has taken a number of steps to lower its dependence on Chinese imports in the renewable energy space. In this course, it has increased import duties on solar modules and cells and introduced incentives to boost local manufacturing of these products.
