POWERGRID, PEC join hands to set up training & research centre

Chandigarh: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has partnered with Punjab Engineering College (deemed to be university), Chandigarh, to set up a state-of-the-art POWERGRID Centre of Excellence at PEC. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The centre will offer advanced training and research facilities in power and energy engineering, strengthening hands-on learning and industry-relevant skills for students and faculty. The MoU was signed Friday by POWERGRID ED Tarun Bajaj and PEC director Rajesh Kumar Bhatia in a ceremony attended by Chandigarh chief secretary Rajeev Verma, POWERGRID CMD RK Tyagi, and other senior officials. The centre will be developed at a cost of more than Rs 17 crore. This new facility aims to enhance PEC's electrical engineering curriculum through advanced labs focused on numerical relays, Phasor measurement units (PMUs), inverters, cybersecurity, e-mobility, and real-time simulation tools. It will provide students, researchers, and faculty hands-on experience in cutting-edge power sector technologies. Prof Bhatia thanked POWERGRID for supporting this initiative, which promises to boost research and learning opportunities at PEC. RK Tyagi, recalling his days as a PEC student, described the centre as POWERGRID's contribution to India's vision of a unified and modern power grid. Chief secretary Rajeev Verma said the centre will serve as a hub for innovation and contribute to India's goals for energy security and a sustainable, zero-emission future. POWERGRID, a Maharatna company under the ministry of power, operates a vast transmission network across northern India, including Punjab and Chandigarh, with a focus on technology-driven efficiency and reliability. State-owned Power Grid Corporation of India on Thursday announced the acquisition of MEL Power Transmission , a special purpose vehicle ( SPV ), from PFC Consulting , entailing an investment of Rs 558 crore. PFC Consulting is a subsidiary of the state-owned Power Finance Corporation . The acquisition follows POWERGRID's selection as the successful bidder for the project titled 'Transmission System for evacuation of power from Mahan Energen Limited Generating Station in Madhya Pradesh.' The project involves setting up a 400kV double-circuit transmission line and associated bays at the existing Rewa Powergrid substation. MPTL, incorporated on November 19, 2024, by PFC Consulting Limited, was transferred to POWERGRID on a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) basis. The acquisition includes 10,000 equity shares at par and the company's assets and liabilities, with the price subject to adjustment based on audited accounts. POWERGRID acquired 100% shareholding in MPTL, which aligns with its core business of power transmission. Although MPTL is yet to commence commercial operations, it is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the evacuation infrastructure for power generation in Madhya Pradesh. Further regulatory approvals, such as the grant of a transmission license and adoption of transmission charges, will be secured from the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). Maharatna PSU Powergrid projects capex of over ₹3 lakh crore by 2032

Government-owned Maharatna' Public Sector company, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd ( POWERGRID ) on Wednesday said that the company's estimated capex outlay will reach ₹3,06,600 crore by 2032. The capex outlay refers to the total amount of funds a company spends on projects or investments over a specific period. It also includes all expenses or expenditures related to operations, capital investments, or other financial commitments made by the company. In its investor presentation, filed with the stock exchanges, the energy sector PSU said that its expected transmission business outlay by 2032 will be ₹2,99,100 crore, while other businesses' outlay will be around ₹7,500 crores. Presenting the works currently undertaken by the PSU is ₹1,54,680 crore of work in hand, out of which ₹1,05,094 crore is of Tariff Based Competitive Bidding and ₹37,221 crore is for Real-Time Market (RTM), while the ongoing RTM of the company stands at ₹9,580 and ₹2,785 crore is in the others category. The energy PSU said that capex was ₹28,000 crore in Financial Year 2025-26, while the capex estimation is ₹35,000 crore for FY 2026-27 and ₹45,000 crore for FY 27-28. The company has set a sustainability target of about 50 per cent of electricity consumption from renewable energy sources by 2025. It targets being net water positive by 2030 and aims to achieve zero waste to landfill status, the investor's presentation added. The Maharatna PSU has achieved a 40.61 per cent reduction in Scope-1 emissions and a 5.23 per cent reduction in Scope-2 emissions. Scope 1 emissions represent the direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated from an organisation's owned or controlled sources. According to the sectoral outlook presented by the power transmission giant, the economy will witness a huge expansion of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), reaching 47 gigawatts by 2032. The piped hydro storage will touch the mark of 36 GW by 2032. On the clean energy front, Powergrid says that India is expected to have 600 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2032. As part of this transition, the growing focus on green hydrogen is expected to significantly increase electricity demand, with an estimated additional requirement of around 71 GW by 2032 to support its production.
