Energy prices to increase, including PPL rate hikes starting Jun. 1
LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) – Some Pennsylvania power customers will see their electric bill increase in June as PPL Electric Utilities will raise their generation supply price. The Allentown-based utility is hiking rates by about 15%, from 10.771¢/kWh to 12.490¢/kWh for residential customers effective June 1. This applies to the generation supply price, or 'Price to Compare.' Customers can select a different generation supplier than PPL and potentially find a cheaper price. Close Thanks for signing up! 'We are seeing older power plants that are retiring and going offline and there just isn't enough new generation coming online fast enough to keep up with that demand.' PPL says they directly pass generation supply costs on to the customer without any markup or profit. 'We're always reminding our customers to set a reminder and go back and check on these rates, often because they can and they do change,' Palmer said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. PPL Electric to raise rates 15% in June; how to prepare
ALLENTOWN, Pa. (WHTM) — Some Pennsylvania power customers will see their electric bill rise in January as PPL Electric Utilities will raise their generation supply price. The Allentown-based utility is raising rates by about 15%, from 10.771¢/kWh to 12.490¢/kWh for residential customers effective June 1. The applies to the generation supply price, or 'Price to Compare.' Customers can select a different generation supplier than PPL and potentially find a cheaper price. 'While PPL Electric doesn't generate electricity or control electric generation supply prices, we understand that our customers look to us for guidance and support,' said Christine Martin, president of PPL Electric Utilities. 'That's why we're committed to delivering safe, reliable service — and helping customers better understand their electric bill, reduce energy use and make informed decisions to manage their energy costs.' 'We continue to advocate for long-term policy reforms that can bring more stability to electricity supply and contribute to lower overall electricity prices for our customers, including allowing regulated utilities to invest in electric generation on behalf of our customers,' said Martin. 'We foreshadowed an increase of this nature in multiple and widespread communications following the steep price increases in PJM's July 2024 capacity auction. What we anticipated would happen is now, unfortunately, becoming reality.' PPL says they directly pass generation supply costs on to the customer without any markup or profit. The utility says that if customers are looking for resources to help manage their bills, they are encouraged to look into 'budget billing,' which allows customers to spread their electricity costs throughout the year to make monthly bills more predictable. They also suggest shopping for a competitive energy supplier. You can do so at the Public Utility Commission's website here. PPL non-financial customer data involved in 2023 breach, company says
ALLENTOWN, Pa. (WHTM) — A Pennsylvania electric utility says some of its customer data was part of a data breach. PPL Electric Utilities said a third-party vendor was impacted by a widespread breach of file transfer software they had used. The breach occurred in June 2023 and was resolved later that year. PPL completes sale of Tower Building in Lehigh County In the Midstate, the Allentown-based utility serves much of Lancaster County, the Greater Harrisburg area, and the Route 22 corridor north to Mifflintown. PPL services 29 counties in the state. 'Importantly, data exposed include banking or credit card information, social security numbers or account passwords, as no such information is shared with this vendor,' PPL said in a statement. 'It did not extend beyond basic information such as name, address, phone number, email address and utility account number.' 'This issue is completely unrelated to PPL's systems and critical infrastructure across all our service areas,' PPL continued. PPL reminds customers to stay vigilant for scams and reiterate that they will never demand immediate payment over the phone, through email, or in person; request financial information, require payment through prepaid cards, gift cards, or cryptocurrency; or threaten to shut off service without immediate payment.
