There's a P. Ramlee tribute concert happening this September and here's why it's worth considering

KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 — A tribute concert for the late Malaysian icon Tan Sri P. Ramlee is set to take place this September 20, featuring some of the country's top performers and maestros. The Konsert Legasi P. Ramlee, which will be held at the Mega Star Arena Kuala Lumpur in Sungei Wang Plaza, promises an immersive experience that blends classic, contemporary, and pop elements into a theatrical, cinematic, and emotionally resonant performance. The concert will feature four renowned local music maestros — composers and music directors Datuk Mokhzani Ismail, Datuk Ramli MS, and Helen Yap, along with acclaimed jazz pianist Michael Veerapen, who will conduct a 60-piece orchestra during the show. There will also be performances by a dynamic lineup of legendary and contemporary artists, including Datuk Jamal Abdillah, Datuk Zainal Abidin, Ella, Mimi Fly, Nadeera, and Liza Hanim. Audiences can expect over 30 timeless P. Ramlee songs, reinterpreted through a mix of medleys, duets, and solo performances. Some songs will retain their original arrangements, while others will feature modern musical stylings that stay true to their essence. Additionally, the concert will feature special appearances by three celebrated P. Ramlee tribute performers — P. Radhi, Danie Hasbullah, and Musly Ramlee. Konsert Legasi P. Ramlee is organised by TanahAir Films Sdn Bhd, founded by prominent media figure Datuk Khairul Anwar Salleh and well-known actor-director Adlin Aman Ramlie. The concert is part of their 'Projek Perdana P. Ramlee', an ambitious multi-platform initiative designed to honour the artistic brilliance and cultural legacy of P. Ramlee and his contemporaries. Khairul said the concert marks the second phase of the Projek Perdana P. Ramlee initiative, which began with the launch of their Legasi Podcast in September 2024. 'This concert is more than just entertainment. It is a bridge between generations, a revival of timeless artistic values, and a heartfelt tribute to one of the greatest cultural figures in our nation's history,' said Khairul. Adlin added that the concert is not only a nostalgic homage, but also a bold reinvention: 'This will be an unforgettable evening that transports audiences back to the golden era of Malay music — reimagined through the lens of four brilliant musical minds. 'It will revive the spirit of P. Ramlee not only in melody, but through every scene, every moment, and every emotional beat,' said Adlin. Although ticket prices have yet to be announced, tickets for Konsert Legasi P. Ramlee will go on sale next Friday, June 27, via

P. Ramlee's enduring legacy a beacon of national unity, says deputy minister

GEORGE TOWN, June 14 — The late legendary artiste Tan Sri P. Ramlee was more than just a cultural icon; he was also a symbol of national unity whose legacy continues to unify Malaysians regardless of race, religion, or ethnicity, said Deputy National Unity Minister K. Saraswathy. She said P. Ramlee's lifetime creative works transcended racial and religious boundaries, depicting the lives of ordinary people with profound humanity, including love, mutual respect, looking out for one another and a strong sense of family. 'I believe messages of unity reflected in the works of P. Ramlee, whose real name was Teuku Zakaria Teuku Nyak Puteh, will continue to be remembered, remain relevant and serve as a beacon for the harmony of Malaysia Madani. 'This aligns with the government's aspiration to foster a united Madani society that is respectful of one another, regardless of race, culture, or religion. P. Ramlee has left us with a timeless legacy through his creative works and brilliant ideas,' she said when officiating the closing ceremony of Minggu Kenangan P. Ramlee: 'Satu Dalam Sejuta' and the music forum 'Kisah Di Sebalik Lagu' here today. According to her, messages of harmony, unity, cooperation, and mutual respect were brilliantly captured and highlighted in the artiste's works. Also present were National Archives director-general Datuk Jaafar Sidek Abdul Rahman, Penang Fan Club president Tan Sri Yussof Latiff and renowned lyricist Datuk Habsah Hassan. Various programmes were lined up throughout the event, including a lecture by preacher Datuk Mohamad Kazim Elias, better known as Ustaz Kazim, titled 'Sedangkan Lidah Lagi Tergigit' on May 24 and the 'Satu Dalam Sejuta' run on May 25 at Padang Kota Lama. Saraswathy elaborated that the programme aligns well with the aspirations of Ikhtiar 4 under the National Unity Ministry's 2025 Strategic Plan, particularly within the Socio-Cultural Community Cluster: Semarak Perpaduan, which aims to deepen appreciation for national heritage, instil pride in cultural identity and strengthen bonds among Malaysia's multiracial communities through the arts and shared history. 'Besides that, collaboration and partnership in organising such programmes are crucial in efforts to preserve the nation's cultural heritage. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and corporate bodies to collaborate in forming similar partnerships for the benefit of society and the nation. 'May the National Archives' aspiration to disseminate information and strengthen public understanding of unity through the messages conveyed in P. Ramlee's works be successfully realised. It is hoped that through these efforts, the spirit of cohesion and harmony among the Malaysia Madani society can be preserved,' she added. — Bernama

25,000 devotes expected to participate in Wesak Day float procession

KUALA LUMPUR: Around 25,000 devotees are expected to join the Wesak Day float procession starting at the Buddhist Maha Vihara, Brickfields on Monday (May 12). Joint Wesak Celebration Committee (JWCC) chairman Ng Yong Pau said the procession, featuring about 30 floats, will start at 6 pm from the Buddhist Maha Vihara at Jalan Berhala and pass through Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad, Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Jalan Petaling, Jalan Yap Ah Loy, Jalan Hang Lekiu, Jalan Gereja and Jalan Raja Chulan. The procession will then return to the Maha Vihara via Jalan P Ramlee, Jalan Raja Chulan, Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Jalan Tun Sambanthan and Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad the same night, completing an approximately 12-kilometre journey in four hours. 'The 25,000 devotees are those walking alongside the floats in stages, excluding the thousands more who will be bystanders or waiting to watch the procession. So you can imagine a huge crowd will be waiting. This year's theme is 'Foster True Compassion and Wisdom, Forge True Peace and Harmony' . 'In previous years, we went through Jalan Bukit Bintang, but this year we couldn't use it because of a change in the traffic direction (one-way). We hope that through this parade, we can spread the peace and harmony of Buddhism to all,' he told a press conference here, tonight. According to Ng, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook is scheduled to attend the launching ceremony on Monday evening. Apart from the procession, the Maha Vihara will also organise a blood donation campaign and provide free food. Thousands of devotees are expected to visit the temple with offerings of flowers, candles, and joss sticks. Meanwhile, Buddhist Chief High Priest of Malaysia Datuk Dr K. Sri Dhammaratana expressed concern that modern society is drifting away from its spiritual and familial roots. 'Nowadays, society has changed, the spiritual feeling is fading away and the family feeling is fading away. I humbly would like to appeal to all parents to give their children at least the background and basic teachings of the great masters,' he said. Wesak Day holds paramount importance for Buddhists, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism. The festival is marked by the lighting of incense sticks and lotus-shaped candles, offering flowers, and the symbolic bathing of the Buddha statue.

PKR polls: Anwar breaks into song when asked about big names tumbling

When faced with questions about the recent PKR party elections, Anwar Ibrahim chose to serenade journalists with a classic tune, 'Tunggu Sekejap', by the legendary P Ramlee instead. Quizzed on several big names failing to make the cut, the PKR president quoted a line from the song: 'Tunggu sekejap, jangan dikenang orang jauh, tunggu sekejap…' (Wait a moment, don't reminisce about someone far away, wait a moment…)'.
