MacArthur Memorial artifact a finalist for conservation prize
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The legendary cap of General Douglas MacArthur, a treasured artifact housed at the MacArthur Memorial Museum in Norfolk, is a finalist for the Virginia Association of Museums conservation prize.
This recognition underscores the importance of the historical piece and honors the effort to preserve the legacy of one of America's most influential military figures.
This remarkable piece, housed at the City of Norfolk's MacArthur Memorial Museum, not only represents the legacy of a military icon but also highlights the ongoing commitment to preserving our heritage.
The public can help fund the conservation of MacArthur's cap by voting for it on VAM's website. The artifact with the most votes will receive $1,000 for conservation.
Voting is free and open from Feb. 11 to Feb. 28, and individuals can vote online daily.
MacArthur's distinctive cap is an internationally recognized symbol of America's commitment to keeping promises, civilian control over the military, and the fight against fascism and militarism.
He wore the cap from 1936 to 1961 during many significant moments in American history. In 1942, saltwater exposure caused the cap to shrink as he escaped the besieged island of Corregidor aboard PT-41.
After arriving in Australia during a dark period of World War II, he famously promised, 'I Shall Return.' When he fulfilled that promise in 1944, he wore the cap while wading ashore in the Philippines.
He also wore it while presiding over the surrender of Japan, during the Occupation of Japan, and throughout the Korean War.
Over the past 14 years, VAM's Top 10 Endangered Artifacts program has benefited more than 200 institutions by highlighting the importance of Virginia museums and the conservation efforts required to preserve the history of artifacts and the stories they tell.
Don't miss the chance to celebrate this significant recognition!
