'Using cheap language against CM': TMC hits out at Amit Shah on remarks against Mamata Banerjee

Sankalang Bridge washed away as Teesta River swells amid heavy rainfall in Sikkim; IMD issues red alert for Mangan district
SIKKIM: A section of the under-construction Sankalang Bridge in North Sikkim was swept away by the Teesta River on Sunday, following intense and continuous rainfall in the region. — PTI_News (@PTI_News) The bridge holds critical importance as it serves as the only road link connecting Dzongu, Chungthang, Lachung, and Lachen to the rest of Sikkim. Its damage has severely impacted connectivity to these remote areas. The Teesta River's water level rose sharply due to the heavy downpour in the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mangan district in Sikkim today, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the region. An orange alert has also been issued for Gyalshing, Namchi, Soreng, Gangtok, and Pakyong districts for the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, rescue operations entered the second day in Mangan district as teams continue to search for nine missing persons after a tourist vehicle carrying 11 people plunged nearly 1,000 feet into the Teesta River near Chubombu on May 29. Sonam Detchu Bhutia, superintendent of police, Mangan, confirmed that efforts are ongoing despite challenging weather conditions. In light of the ongoing weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has strongly advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors whenever possible, and keep a safe distance from riverbanks and vulnerable slopes.

Bihar woman gives husband 'watermelon laced with poison' after performing Vat Savitri Puja

Mantu Yadav, reportedly consumed the poisoned fruit on May 26 and soon began feeling unwell. Before collapsing, he managed to inform his sister-in-law that his wife, Lakhia Devi, had given him watermelon laced with poison. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Confirming the arrest, Sanjeet Kumar Prabhat, deputy superintendent of police (Sherghati), said: 'We filed an FIR on May 26 based on a complaint lodged by the deceased's sister-in-law. The victim had told her that he was poisoned by his wife. The accused, Lakhia Devi, has been taken into custody. We are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of death.'

Red alert in Kerala as landslides hit Idukki district; IMD warns of more heavy rain
Kerala's Idukki district reported landslides on Friday even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded a red alert for three districts due to continued heavy rainfall, PTI reported. The landslides come amid intense showers across the state, with the IMD forecasting widespread rainfall under the influence of strong westerly winds in the lower tropospheric levels. The IMD has also warned of "isolated extremely heavy rainfall" in parts of Kerala over the next few days. — PTI_News (@PTI_News) A red alert is in effect for eight districts — Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. Idukki, where landslides were reported, has shut all institutions except residential schools and colleges. Summer coaching is not allowed. Kottayam has closed all educational facilities. MG University has postponed exams scheduled for Friday. Ernakulam, Kasaragod, Wayanad, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur, and Kuttanad Taluk in Alappuzha have issued similar closure orders, though in most cases, scheduled exams will proceed as planned. Night travel and tourism restricted in Idukki With the IMD's red alert for May 29 and 30, the Kerala government has implemented emergency measures in Idukki district under the Disaster Management Act, 2005: Night-time travel in high-range areas is banned from 7 PM to 6 AM, except for emergencies. All tourism-related activities are suspended until further notice. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and avoid travel in vulnerable areas as rainfall is expected to continue through early next week.
