Krafton, Nexon solidify industry-leading standings with upbeat earnings

Struggline NCSoft, Kakao Games pin hope on new titles Krafton and Nexon are solidifying their leadership in the Korean game industry, posting strong earnings in the first quarter to start the year strong on the back of successful new titles and ongoing popularity of the existing intellectual property. Krafton logged record-high first quarter revenue of 874.2 billion won ($625.8 million) and operating profit of 457.3 billion won from the January-to-March period this year, up 31.3 percent and 47.3 percent on year, respectively. Krafton's megahit battle royale shooter PUBG: Battlegrounds continued to attract gamers, with the maximum number of concurrent users reaching 1.4 million in March, according to the company. The game developer's life simulation game inZOI, which became available for early access on global gaming platform Steam in March, sold 1 million copies within a week of its debut to set a new record as the fastest Korean game to reach the milestone. Nexon raked in 1.08 trillion won in revenue and 395.2 billion won in operating profit in the first quarter, up 5 percent and 43 percent respectively from the same period last year. Nexon's two longstanding popular games — Dungeon & Fighter, an online multiplayer side-scrolling action game, and MapleStory, an online side-scrolling massively multiplayer online role-playing game, or MMORPG — led the company's robust sales. With the veterans leading the way, The First Berserker: Khazan, a hardcore action RPG based on Dungeon & Fighter, and Mabinogi Mobile, a multi-access MMORPG, gave a boost as they were newly released in March. Netmarble delivered an earnings surprise as it logged 623.9 billion won in revenue and 49.7 billion won in operating profit, up 6.6 percent and 1243.2 percent on year, respectively. The operating profit, which shot way over the market consensus, was achieved thanks to the stable performances from its diverse lineup of games such as action RPG Solo Leveling:ARISE and fighting action games Marvel Contest of Champions. RF Online Next, a space-themed MMORPG released on March 20, accounted for about 3 percent of the company's quarterly game sales despite having only 10 days of impact on the quarterly earnings, raising optimism for the second quarter results. In contrast to the three aforementioned companies, NCSoft and Kakao Games struggled as they did not have any meaningful new titles. NCSoft earned 360.3 billion won in revenue and 5.2 billion won in operating profit to turn black in the first three months of this year. Although the company launched Journey of Monarch, an MMORPG based on NCSoft's flagship IP Lineage, in December last year, the game could not help the firm's ailing figures greatly. NCSoft plans to roll out seven new titles through 2026 including Aion 2 in the second half of this year, vowing to hit 2 trillion won in annual revenue next year. Kakao Games recorded 211.9 billion won in revenue and 12.4 billion in operating loss in the first quarter. Kakao Games will look to the global market this year including the North American and European regions as the company plans to release games with various genres for different platforms, including open-world action MMORPG Chrono Odyssey, online action RPG ArcheAge Chronicles and mobile side-scrolling action PRG Goddess Order.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered rockets to top of Steam sales

American company Bethesda's upgraded version of 'The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered', a 20-year-old video game, has become one of the most played on Steam (digital distribution platform for PC games) after being released on Tuesday. It has climbed to the top of the platform's sales chart, according to a report by Gadgets360. According to the reviews on Steam, 82 per cent of the 19,291 reviews are positive. Online player reactions are largely positive, with fans applauding the remaster for staying true to the original game. Strong start Gadgets360, while citing data from SteamDB, reported that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered hit a peak of 190,119 concurrent players within just a day of its release on April 22. It quickly climbed the ranks to become one of the most-played titles on Steam, trailing major games like Counter-Strike 2, PUBG: Battlegrounds, Dota 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Apex Legends. The numbers are notable given that the remaster also launched on Game Pass (Xbox Game Pass subscription service) the same day, meaning many players are accessing it through Microsoft's subscription service at no extra cost. With the game also available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the total player base is likely far larger. Bethesda might share more comprehensive figures soon. The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion: What's new The remastered edition of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion brings a full visual and technical overhaul, rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5. The Verge reported that the game includes the Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles expansions and showcases significantly enhanced graphics, lighting, and environmental detail through complete asset recreation. The remaster introduces improved lip-syncing, upgraded audio, and modernised UI elements. Updates also affect encumbrance, passive skills, and other non-combat mechanics to better match current-gen expectations. Other refinements include a redesigned third-person view, a new sprinting mechanic, and polished animations across the board.

Seoul shares snap 3-day rise amid Trump uncertainties

South Korean stocks snapped their three-day rise Tuesday on heightened uncertainties ahead of Seoul's tariff negotiations with Washington later this week. The Korean won was trading higher against the US dollar. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index lost 1.78 points, or 0.07 percent, to close at 2,486.64, ending its three-day losing streak. Trade volume was moderate at 408 million shares worth 6.1 trillion won ($4.3 billion), with winners slightly outnumbering losers 460 to 414. Foreigners unloaded 243 billion won worth of local shares, while retail investors purchased 166.4 billion won. Overnight, Wall Street lost ground as President Donald Trump ramped up criticism of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, saying the US economy could slow down unless the Fed immediately lowers its interest rate. In Seoul, investors remained cautious on lingering uncertainties ahead of South Korea's planned tariff negotiations with the US this week and the beginning of the corporate earnings season, analysts said. South Korea will hold "2+2 trade consultations" with the US, attended by the countries' finance and trade ministers, on Thursday to discuss tariff issues. The Trump administration slapped Seoul with 25 percent reciprocal tariffs earlier this month, though it has paused their implementation for 90 days. Market bellwether Samsung Electronics lost 0.72 percent to 55,000 won, and chip giant SK hynix pulled back 1.59 percent to 173,800 won. Top automaker Hyundai Motor dropped 0.91 percent to 185,600 won and its sister Kia went down 1.36 percent to 86,800 won. Krafton, the developer of hit game PUBG: Battlegrounds, also declined 1.43 percent to 379,000 won. On the other hand, leading shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy jumped 3.27 percent to 363,500 won and its rival Hanwha Ocean gained 1.41 percent to 79,000 won. Internet portal operator Naver soared 3.31 percent to 193,700 won and Kakao, the operator of the country's dominant mobile messenger, went up 0.77 percent to 39,210 won. The local currency was quoted at 1,420.6 won against the US dollar at 3:30 a.m., up 1.5 won from the previous session. (Yonhap)
