Most Karnataka Common Entrance Test toppers eye top medical colleges, await National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test results
Bengaluru/Mangaluru: While candidates and colleges celebrate top ranks in the CET 2025 results announced Saturday, many toppers across streams are now turning their attention to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG), hoping to secure top scores and admission to premier medical colleges. For instance, Akshay M Hegde, from Alva's PU College, Moodbidri, Dakshina Kannada, secured first rank in BSc (Agriculture) and ranked within the top 34 in other streams. He said, "Though I secured top ranks in several CET streams, my focus is solely on NEET. I'm expecting a good rank in NEET, and my dream is to join one of the top medical colleges in the country. For now, I don't plan to opt for any CET seats." For Harishraj DV, a student of Narayana E Techno School, Yelahanka, CET was merely a 'practice exam'. "My preparation was focused entirely on NEET-UG, and I'm not interested in taking up CET seats. I treated CET as a practice exam before NEET," said Harishraj, who secured first rank in nursing and veterinary, third rank in BPharma and DPharma, and sixth in agriculture. Saphal S Shetty, of Expert PU College, Valachil, Mangaluru, secured top rank in various CET streams, including third in BNYS (Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences) and veterinary, and eighth in BPharma and DPharma. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No dark spots, 10 years younger! My parents are in the medical field and I want to follow in their footsteps." Similarly, Nuthan Krishna Bhairavesh D, of Excellent PU College, Moodbidri, who also scored above 99th percentile in JEE, has his eyes set on medical education. "I'm confident of getting a good NEET-UG rank. I aspire to study at All India Institute Of Medical Sciences, Delhi," he said. He secured fourth rank in BNYS, fifth in BPharma and DPharma, and sixth in veterinary and nursing. Having appeared for both NEET-UG and JEE alongside CET, most students have their preferences clear. Narendra L Nayak, chairman of Expert Group of Institutions, pointed out that the courses offered through CET are limited. "All those bright students who dream about medical education will never take any subject other than their passion. Entrance tests like CET, which happen a few weeks before NEET, help them mentally prepare for the medical entrance test, giving real-time experience," he said. Mohammed Sadakath, principal of Alva's PU College, said, "Over the years, I've observed that most students who top CET rarely opt for those seats. Their first priority is always medicine, and they remain committed to that path."

Residency Road white-topping will throw Bengaluru's central business district traffic out of gear
Bengaluru: Traffic in central Bengaluru is expected to be disrupted with BBMP starting its white-topping work on Residency Road. The project — covering the 280-metre stretch from Ashirvadam Junction (near St Joseph's PU College) to Opera Junction (near Brigade Road) — began on May 8 and is expected to continue until May 31. The work is anticipated to cause major congestion in the central business district (CBD), affecting Residency Road, Richmond Road, Convent Road, St Mark's Road, Anil Kumble Circle, Nanjappa Circle, Hosur Road, and surrounding areas. Vehicle users are advised to plan alternative routes and allow for extra travel time. Evidence of the disruption was already seen last weekend when the CBD experienced heavy traffic congestion during rain on Saturday evening, with vehicles stuck for several minutes. Slow-moving traffic continued on Sunday evening as well. BBMP decided to undertake white-topping after the stretch, previously built under the TenderSure project, suffered from waterlogging and developed multiple potholes. Traffic police have issued an advisory about traffic arrangements to ensure smooth vehicular flow in and around the affected areas. A senior police officer explained the timing of the project: "The area has many schools. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo Permission was given to BBMP to carry out work because schools were on summer vacation. The timing was specifically chosen to prevent disruption to students." Allaying concerns about potential delays affecting school-goers and worsening traffic in the area, M Lokesh, chief engineer (projects), said: "We plan to finish the work in 10-15 days. We'll definitely stick to the deadline." Ashok Nagar traffic inspector Seema VS has taken proactive measures to expedite the work. For example, she has asked that cement loads be increased so that work can be completed quickly, giving time for curing and other related activities. The inspector has also arranged for doubling the workforce on the project, ensuring 24x7 operations. Permission was granted only after reviewing the day-to-day work progress plan, with clear terms and conditions documented. One condition stipulates that a BBMP engineer must be present at the workplace at all times. Also, police, quoting IMD, said showers are expected only for the next couple of days, and the project won't face any rain-related delays. In case BBMP requires additional time to complete white-topping work at the junction, police will only permit work from Saturday night through Sunday, with the road to be reopened to traffic by Monday morning.

Govt PU colleges see poor admissions despite early hostel portal opening
Mangaluru: Despite the state govt opening the portal for admission to various govt hostels earlier than usual, the response to govt PU College admissions has been low. Last year, candidates from far-off places, who preferred hostels were inconvenienced since they did not get hostels by the beginning of the academic year. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now They were forced to stay in paying guest accommodations or their relatives' houses, and got admissions to hostels only after a month of the start of the academic year. However, the state govt opened the portal early, and yet there is no positive response to admissions. For example, Government PU College for Women in Balmatta, which gets the highest admission among all PU colleges in the district, has been able to fill only 50% of seats so far. "We are clueless as to why the admissions are dull this time. We have a total intake of 500 seats across three streams—arts, commerce, and science. The majority of our candidates come from other districts and far-off places in the district. Considering the inconvenience caused last year due to the delay in hostel admission, the govt has opened the portal early, and yet there is a poor response," said college principal Vanita Devadiga, adding that admissions are overall poor compared to previous years. The first-year classes will begin on June 2 across the state. The college heads also speculate that the candidates are either opting for diploma or short-term job-oriented courses. If not, they are taking admission in private institutions. "We expected to fill at least 50 seats this academic year, and so far only 25 seats are filled. The scenario across the district is similar this year," said Jayanand Suvarna, principal of Govt PU College, Shaktinagar, and president of the Dakshina Kannada Pre-University Colleges Principals' Association. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Another PU college principal shared that those who are taking the SSLC-2 exam for enhancing their results are not many. As a result, all those candidates must have taken admission by now. "Only science and commerce streams have demand, and there are no takers for arts streams. Even those PU colleges which had good admissions in the arts stream reported poor admissions," said Vittal K, principal, Kittel Memorial PU College.

Computer science courses gain popularity in PU colleges
Mangaluru: Prominent colleges across the district are currently processing I PU admissions and have reported a surge in applications for computer science in both science and commerce streams. Previously, the science stream's PCMB (physics, chemistry, mathematics, and biology) was highly sought after, followed by commerce courses. However, the current trend shows students and parents are seeking programmes that incorporate computer science as one of the core subjects. This shift, which began two years ago, is attributed to the increasing significance of artificial intelligence , robotics, and machine learning in the market, as well as the high competition for medical UG Alva's PU College, approximately 320 seats in commerce and about 600 seats in science are reserved for computer science combinations. College principal Mohammed Sadakath said that there is an equal demand for PCMB and PCMC combinations in their college. This is because they have students interested in pursuing medicine and engineering courses after PU. The demand for the electronics subject shifted to computer science about two years ago. Some students who do not pursue medicine or a related field opt for computer science as an optional subject. Additionally, taking biology involves a lot of work, records, and other responsibilities. Sadakath noted that the demand for computer science combinations is higher in urban areas, while in rural areas, PCMB is still preferred in the science stream. He also mentioned that the electronics subject, which was once in high demand, has no takers L Nayak, chairman, Expert Group of Institutions, explained that the demand for computer science and combinations of non-biology subjects in PU started only after the recent NEET-2025, which was one of the toughest entrances so far. He said that only those with strong determination opt for PCMB with an eye on medical education. However, others who are aware about recent NEET test, which was tough, are reconsidering and exploring engineering as their first choice. Nayak said that there are others who take home science as a combination with physics, chemistry and biology instead of computer science, which is an easy official from St Aloysius PU College explained that the high demand for computer science is due to emerging fields like AI, ML, data science, and data analytics. There are good takers for computer science courses in both science and commerce.
