Govt PU colleges see poor admissions despite early hostel portal opening

Time of India16-05-2025

Mangaluru: Despite the state govt opening the portal for admission to various govt hostels earlier than usual, the response to govt PU College admissions has been low.
Last year, candidates from far-off places, who preferred hostels were inconvenienced since they did not get hostels by the beginning of the academic year.

They were forced to stay in paying guest accommodations or their relatives' houses, and got admissions to hostels only after a month of the start of the academic year.
However, the state govt opened the portal early, and yet there is no positive response to admissions.
For example, Government PU College for Women in Balmatta, which gets the highest admission among all PU colleges in the district, has been able to fill only 50% of seats so far.
"We are clueless as to why the admissions are dull this time. We have a total intake of 500 seats across three streams—arts, commerce, and science. The majority of our candidates come from other districts and far-off places in the district. Considering the inconvenience caused last year due to the delay in hostel admission, the govt has opened the portal early, and yet there is a poor response," said college principal Vanita Devadiga, adding that admissions are overall poor compared to previous years.
The first-year classes will begin on June 2 across the state. The college heads also speculate that the candidates are either opting for diploma or short-term job-oriented courses. If not, they are taking admission in private institutions. "We expected to fill at least 50 seats this academic year, and so far only 25 seats are filled. The scenario across the district is similar this year," said Jayanand Suvarna, principal of Govt PU College, Shaktinagar, and president of the Dakshina Kannada Pre-University Colleges Principals' Association.

Another PU college principal shared that those who are taking the SSLC-2 exam for enhancing their results are not many. As a result, all those candidates must have taken admission by now. "Only science and commerce streams have demand, and there are no takers for arts streams. Even those PU colleges which had good admissions in the arts stream reported poor admissions," said Vittal K, principal, Kittel Memorial PU College.

Derlakatte Govt PU college converted to women's college

Mangaluru: The Govt PU College in Derlakatte, which started three years ago, was converted into an all-women college after it saw a dip in male student admissions. The college has started admitting female students to arts and commerce courses. However, the second year will continue with male students this academic year. According to officials from the department, the decision was made after the college witnessed poor admissions of male students. There was also a demand from locals for an all-female college. With this change, the district now has a total of four all-girls PU govt colleges. The three other colleges are situated in Balmatta, Carstreet in Mangaluru, and one in Puttur. Rajeshwari, DDPU, Dakshina Kannada, said that based on the request of locals and the college development committee, a proposal was submitted to the department. "A week ago, a team, including me, visited the college campus to check facilities and approved the proposal to convert the college into an all-women institution from this academic year. The college is currently functioning in the high school building, and there is a plan to have its own,'' she said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Get Affordable Health Coverage Today Search7 Learn More Undo The college, which started in 2022, receives students from nearby villages such as Pavoor, Harekala, Manjanady, Konaje, Kinya, Belma, and Thokkottu. A year ago, permission was granted to start new govt PU college at Newpadpu, which was demanded by Harekala Hajabba. Satyaprema K, principal of the college, said that currently, the college has about 50 students for arts and commerce courses. Admission are in progress. "We have plans to introduce science in the coming years," she said, adding that from this year, the department granted permission to enrol only female students, making it the first women's govt PU college in Ullal taluk. Sources from the department added that due to the start of the PU college in Newpadpu last year, the expected number of boys did not enrol in the Derlakatte college. Last year, out of 91 students in the arts and commerce streams in the I PU and II PU, only 41 were boys. "With four government PU colleges in Mudipu, Montepadavu, Derlakatte, and Newpadpu, and the low number of boys enrolled in Derlakatte, the college development committee decided to reserve this college for only girls and submitted a request to the MLA, who is also the president of the college," a source added. Currently, the college has a principal, two permanent teachers, two teachers on deputation, and guest lecturers, with five classrooms and a staff room. Delhi's 3rd Ring Road to open by August

The six-lane Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-2), planned as Delhi's third Ring Road, is set to open by August, effectively cutting travel time from Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport to parts of south-west and north-west Delhi — and the Haryana border — by 40–60%, officials aware of the project have said. Over 95% of the construction is complete, with sections passing through Najafgarh, Mundka and Alipur already operational. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is implementing the project, presented its progress status during a recent meeting between Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari and Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta and her cabinet colleagues. According to officials, Delhi-NCR is currently seeing road infrastructure projects worth ₹34,589 crore underway across 594km, while another ₹23,850 crore has been earmarked for 128km of roadworks that are about to begin. Originally conceived under the Delhi Master Plan Road 2021, UER-2 was later notified as a national highway to be readied in five construction packages. Spanning 76km — of which 54.21km lies in Delhi and 21.5km in Haryana — the ₹8,000 crore corridor is being funded by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for its Delhi section and built by NHAI. 'The UER-2 will offer faster connectivity between Chandigarh, Gurugram and IGI Airport. It has also opened up access to previously underserved parts of Delhi such as Najafgarh, Mundka, Karala, Alipur, and Bawana, enhancing links to south Delhi, Noida, Faridabad, and major highways like NH-48,' a report from the Union road ministry, shared with the Delhi government, noted. During the Lok Sabha campaign in January, Gadkari had highlighted the reuse of two million tonnes of legacy waste from Ghazipur landfill in UER-2's construction — a move that reduced the height of the landfill's trash mountain by seven metres. In a related development, the underpass stretch of the Dwarka Expressway near IGI Airport — which connects with UER-2 — is nearing completion and expected to open in the next 15 days. The expressway will serve as a bypass to NH-48 and improve access between the airport, UER-2, Dwarka and Gurugram. It will also offer a direct link to Yashobhoomi in Sector 25, Dwarka. 'The Dwarka Expressway has significantly eased travel from parts of Delhi such as Mahipalpur, Dwarka, Vasant Kunj and Najafgarh to Gurugram and IGI Airport. The Haryana section was opened in March 2024, while the Delhi stretch, which includes a tunnel and underpasses, is likely to be operational by mid-June,' an official said. The 28-km-long Dwarka Expressway, built at a cost of ₹8,611 crore, is now 98% complete. Officials added that NHAI is increasingly using inert material recovered from legacy waste through biomining for road construction — including projects like the DND–Faridabad–Ballabhgarh–Sohna bypass and UER-II. The use of silt, stones, and construction debris is aimed at cutting landfill volume, conserving natural resources, lowering construction costs and reducing emissions. Story of a 17-year-old: From discontinuing studies to later clearing SSLC

Mysuru: Here's a touching narrative of resilience and determination. A student from the city discontinued formal schooling in Class VI, yet four years later achieved first-class results in the 2024-25 SSLC examination as a private candidate. Subsequently, a pre-university college offered comprehensive support to make his dream of pursuing higher education, including free education, uniform, meals, transport, and specialised coaching in CA foundation, AI, and additional skills. This chronicles 17-year-old Rushil's journey. His family's separation during his Class III led to his relocation to Bengaluru with his father, where he enrolled in a public school. Financial constraints forced him to leave after completing Class VI, without obtaining a transfer certificate. He returned to Mysuru to live with his mother at his grandfather's residence. Despite attempts to secure admission in a Mysuru private school, the absence of documentation and substantial fees were barriers. In May 2022, his grandfather contacted Kaliyuva Mane, a free residential alternative school in Kenchalagudu. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Based on the affidavit submitted by his mother, Rushil qualified to appear for the SSLC examination as a private candidate. His dedication yielded success with 71.4% marks. "He wants to pursue higher education in commerce or computer science. So, when we took him to the Vishwaprajna Composite PU College in Dattagalli of the city, the college offered free education, uniform, transport facility, coaching for various courses, etc. He wishes to pursue BCA/BCom," explained Ananth Kumar, founder, Kaliyuva Mane. Sunil Raj HC, managing trustee of the Vishwaprajna Composite PU College, said, "We are running a charitable trust called Samartha Jnanashraya Charitable Trust. The main aim of this trust is offering free education. Last year we offered free education for 20 students in science stream." "This year, we are giving free education for 30 more students. Along with merit, we also consider various challenges faced by the students even if they didn't score good marks, like children of single parents, defence, poor families, etc., to offer free education. We are extending all support for Rushil from spoken English to AI along with free education, transport facilities, etc.," he added.
