Karnataka govt schools reboot today but most teachers caught up with caste census

Bengaluru: On Friday, govt schoolchildren will walk into their new classes but will not see most of their teachers. Reason: Teachers are either busy with the survey of Scheduled Caste (SC) communities or on SSLC-2 exam duty. The caste census overseen by Justice Nagamohan Das aims at counting the Scheduled Caste and has been under way since the first week of May. Govt school teachers have been at the forefront of the census. "On Thursday, teachers were expected to be on campus to prepare the school for students. Students are expected on Friday. We have 10 teachers. Three of them were assigned the caste census work while another four were on SSLC duty. So, we had only three teachers on Thursday. On Friday too, only three are expected," said the headmistress of a govt school in East Bengaluru. "We expect full attendance of students only from Monday as students will return from their native places only over the weekend. So we will manage with the available teachers on Friday. We hope the teachers are back from Monday," said another headmistress. "We have instructed teachers to be present at the school during working hours and continue with the caste census after work. They are overloaded with work," said a representative of another school. Around 8,232 govt school teachers have been assigned the work of house surveys. As per the latest counts, till May 24, 7,895 of them were on the ground. Teachers are likely to have a hectic weekend, as special camps are being organised for three consecutive days from May 30 to June 1, 2025, across all assembly constituencies. As schools and colleges have reopened, the camps are expected to open in the verandas of these buildings, sheltered from rain and wind. "It's disappointing that, repeatedly, year on year, we talk about the importance of enhancing the quality of teaching in govt schools. Yet, we don't have teachers who are ready from the very first day of learning. We are constantly hijacking children's learning opportunities," said Maya Menon, founder, Teacher Foundation. "Teachers are the first choices for the census because they are educated and can clearly speak to households in a respectable manner. However, when the department is even mindful of not taking them out for professional development on working days, how is it that they are being used for something like the caste census," she added. A senior official said the department of school education and literacy has already written to the department of social welfare to release the teachers. "We will follow up again," said the official.

Govt PU colleges see poor admissions despite early hostel portal opening

Mangaluru: Despite the state govt opening the portal for admission to various govt hostels earlier than usual, the response to govt PU College admissions has been low. Last year, candidates from far-off places, who preferred hostels were inconvenienced since they did not get hostels by the beginning of the academic year. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now They were forced to stay in paying guest accommodations or their relatives' houses, and got admissions to hostels only after a month of the start of the academic year. However, the state govt opened the portal early, and yet there is no positive response to admissions. For example, Government PU College for Women in Balmatta, which gets the highest admission among all PU colleges in the district, has been able to fill only 50% of seats so far. "We are clueless as to why the admissions are dull this time. We have a total intake of 500 seats across three streams—arts, commerce, and science. The majority of our candidates come from other districts and far-off places in the district. Considering the inconvenience caused last year due to the delay in hostel admission, the govt has opened the portal early, and yet there is a poor response," said college principal Vanita Devadiga, adding that admissions are overall poor compared to previous years. The first-year classes will begin on June 2 across the state. The college heads also speculate that the candidates are either opting for diploma or short-term job-oriented courses. If not, they are taking admission in private institutions. "We expected to fill at least 50 seats this academic year, and so far only 25 seats are filled. The scenario across the district is similar this year," said Jayanand Suvarna, principal of Govt PU College, Shaktinagar, and president of the Dakshina Kannada Pre-University Colleges Principals' Association. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Another PU college principal shared that those who are taking the SSLC-2 exam for enhancing their results are not many. As a result, all those candidates must have taken admission by now. "Only science and commerce streams have demand, and there are no takers for arts streams. Even those PU colleges which had good admissions in the arts stream reported poor admissions," said Vittal K, principal, Kittel Memorial PU College.

Online SSLC remedial classes

Mangaluru: The school education and literacy department in Dakshina Kannada (DK), which climbed to the top in SSLC results, is leaving no stone unturned to further enhance its pass percentage. It is considering offering online Tired of too many ads? go ad free now remedial classes for candidates who did not complete their SSLC-1 exam on the first attempt. The SSLC-2 exam for those candidates who did not complete their SSLC and those who passed and wish to further enhance their marks will commence on May 26. It secured an overall pass percentage of 91.1%. Govinda Madivala said that a meeting was held on Tuesday with BEOs, and they decided to hold online classes for those candidates preparing for the SSLC exam-2. A total 8% of candidates are yet to clear the SSLC exam in DK this academic year. During the meeting, officials explored various ways to conduct remedial classes for students who failed to clear the exam. There was a suggestion for regular classes. However, it was opposed since each high school has single-digit candidates who didn't clear the SSLC exam. Keeping in mind safety, convenience, summer holidays and ongoing census work, it would be difficult to hold remedial classes. The second suggestion was to hold online classes by teachers, and it was approved. "The officials found that online classes are ideal, since one can access them by sitting anywhere. We will hold them individually or by bringing all students together," he said. Besides online classes, Madivala shared that Vijayibhava, a question paper bank prepared and circulated months before the SSLC exam, had about 80% of the questions that appeared in the SSLC. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "We will again circulate it among the candidates. It is material that has crisp answers to the questions," he said. There is also a plan to conduct cluster-level mass classes a few days before the examination. "It will be conducted subject-wise since candidates have not been able to clear a few subjects only," he said. The department planned a similar exercise last academic year as well; however, it was a regular offline class, and was met with strong opposition from teachers. The reason was that it was planned during summer holidays.

62.3% candidates pass SSLC, 22 score full marks

Bengaluru: Approximately 62.3% of the nearly nine lakh candidates who took the SSLC Exam 1, held in March-April this year, have passed. The results were announced by the department of school education and literacy here on Friday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Last year, only two students had secured 625 out of 625. This time, though, a record 22 students have managed to score the maximum. Two of the highest-scoring students are from govt schools, while the list of 22 toppers includes 16 girl students. Dakshina Kannada emerged the best among districts with 91% students clearing the exam. However, there are 144 schools across the state, including six govt schools, where none of the students have passed. "We will push these schools to ensure they come up a better show in SSLC-2 and 3 exams," education minister Madhu Bangarappa said. The pass rate for this year is less by about 10 percentage points compared to the 73% recorded in 2024. However, to put things in perspective, this 73% was an improvement on the initial pass percentage of 54%, only after 20 grace marks were awarded to students across the board. "The chief minister [Siddaramaiah] had clearly said there would be no grace marks this time. Instead, he directed us to focus on classroom teaching and learning. In view of that, the department drew up a slew of remedial measures – from completing the syllabus by Dec-Jan, to appointing guest teachers, to conducting special evening classes, with zilla panchayat CEOs directly monitoring the work," Bangarappa explained. "Out of the total students who have passed this year, 75% have got first class and distinction, securing more than 69% marks," the minister said, adding that his department was happy with the students' overall performance this year, considering the dismal initial pass percentage of 54% last year.
