HBCU drops tennis programs in re-alignment
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), a leading HBCU located in Texas, has announced the immediate end of its Men's and Women's Tennis programs. The move is part of a larger plan to reshape Panther Athletics for long-term stability and a better student-athlete experience. This decision follows a full review of the university's athletic programs. With college sports changing quickly, PVAMU and many other HBCU athletic departments must make hard choices to remain competitive while staying true to their mission. By realigning its resources, the university aims to focus on sports that serve more student-athletes and better fit its long-term goals. Honoring a Proud Legacy While Planning Ahead For years, PVAMU's tennis teams have reflected the spirit of HBCU pride-on the court and in the classroom. Their success, commitment, and sportsmanship will always be part of the university's history. However, with rising costs and aging facilities, the university saw a need to invest more in its primary sports. University leaders believe this change will help improve athletic facilities, grow student services, and ensure future progress. PVAMU also plans to boost support for women's sports, helping the school meet Title IX requirements and open more doors for female athletes. Student-Athlete Support is a Top Priority PVAMU is working hard to support all tennis student-athletes during this transition. Scholarships will remain in place through graduation for those in good academic standing who choose to stay. Student-athletes who want to continue playing tennis elsewhere will receive help with transfers, academic planning, and personal support. The university will also provide mental health and wellness services to help students stay on track. While this marks the end of an era, PVAMU remains focused on building a strong, modern athletics program. The goal is to reflect the core values of HBCUs-excellence, access, and community. HBCU soccer player gets shot at World Cup Qualifier
Prairie View A&M junior Emely Reyes has earned a call-up to the El Salvador women's national team for the 2025 FIFA Women's World Cup Qualifiers. This marks a major step in her athletic journey and helps to shine a spotlight on HBCU women's soccer. Reyes is a Houston native and a civil engineering major. She plays as a defender for the PVAMU women's soccer team, where she has consistently shown strength, discipline, and tactical awareness. In 2022, she represented El Salvador at the U-20 level. That experience helped lay the foundation for this senior team opportunity. Now, Reyes will compete on the international stage as her country begins its World Cup qualifying campaign. The CONCACAF qualifiers are highly competitive. Teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean will battle for a chance to earn a spot in the 2025 FIFA Women's World Cup. El Salvador will start group play with high stakes and rising expectations. During the 2024 season at PVAMU, Reyes appeared in five matches and started in four. She recorded three shots, including one on goal, while anchoring the Panthers' back line. The Panthers finished 1-11-4 last season, good for 8th place in the 9 team HBCU conference. Her promotion to the senior national team not only highlights her personal growth, but also reflects positively on the Prairie View soccer program. Reyes brings valuable international experience and a high level of professionalism to the squad. She remains an active and important player for the Panthers as they look ahead to the 2025 season. With her leadership and competitive edge, PVAMU will benefit both on and off the pitch. Jackson Bailey, former Prairie View A&M college football player, dead at 22
Former Prairie View A&M football player Jackson Bailey has died, the program announced on Tuesday. The cause of death for the 22-year-old has not been revealed. Bailey joined the football program for the 2023 season but did not appear in any games for the university located in Texas. 4 Jackson Bailey of Prairie View A&M died on Tuesday due to an unknown cause. 'The Prairie View A&M University Department of Athletics extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, teammates and fraternity brothers of Jackson 'Jacks' Bailey, a cherished member of the Panther football program and the PVAMU community,' the university's statement read. 'Jackson joined the football team for the 2023–24 season. Although he did not appear in any official games, his presence and energy were felt deeply within the locker room and across campus. Michael Quintero/Facebook The Red Oak, Texas native began his college football career at Arizona, entering his freshman as a three-star linebacker recruit and went on to redshirt the 2021 season before transferring to Louisiana-Monroe. He played nine games in the 2022 season, tallying 14 total tackles and one quarterback hurry. During his junior year of high school, Red Oak reached the regional finals of the Texas 5A D2 State Playoffs where Bailey led the Hawks with 60 total tackles, along with nine tackles for loss and two quarterback hurries. 4 Jackson Bailey is memorialized in a social media image by Coach Bam Harrison. Bailey, who began his college career at Arizona before transferring to Louisiana-Monroe, was on Prairie View's roster for the 2023-24 season. In a statement on the athletic department's website, the school did not disclose a cause of death for Bailey. 'Jackson joined the football team for the 2023–24 season. Although he did not appear in any official games, his presence and energy were felt deeply within the locker room and across campus. A proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. – Zeta Beta Chapter, Jackson exemplified brotherhood, resilience, and purpose. The statement went on to say that Bailey 'brought a light-hearted and grounded spirit to everything' before touching on his faith. 'His favorite words to live by were: 'God got me.' These words guided his path on and off the field.'
