Nilambur bypoll: Anvar seeks donations for campaign fund

Kozhikode: Former Nilambur MLA and independent candidate PV Anvar, who has declared assets worth Rs 52 crore in his election affidavit, launched a crowd funding campaign seeking donations from voters of Nilambur saying that he was facing a financial crisis. In a Facebook video posted on Friday, Anvar said that despite owning property worth crores, he was unable to sell even a cent as all his assets were entangled in an "excess land" case. "I have not done any election preparation due to the financial crunch. I am now launching a crowdfunding initiative and urge everyone to contribute, even Rs 1 or Rs 10 as a token of moral support," he said, adding that donor details would be kept confidential. Meanwhile, Left councillor in Nilambur municipality and JDS national council member Ismail Eranjikkal joined the All India Trinamool Congress, extending support to independent candidate PV Anvar. He said that Anvar was the only candidate who was raising the genuine issues of the people of the constituency. Ismail said that he was leaving the JDS as the party was in alliance with BJP at the national level while it was part of the LDF in the state with power minister K Krishnankutty representing the party in the cabinet. No Anvar factor in Nilambur, says Swaraj

MALAPPURAM: In fielding its state secretariat member M Swaraj for the Nilambur by-election, the CPM hopes to take on the Congress and the UDF politically. In an interview to TNIE, the 46-year-old candidate says P V Anvar will not be a factor in the bypoll, which he sees as a precursor to the 2026 assembly election. Excerpts: What are the political underpinnings of this election? The Nilambur by-election is a precursor to the 2026 assembly election. Common people want the LDF to win a third term in 2026. That is the sentiment of those who are benefiting from the changes that have taken place in the state over the last nine years. We are interacting with people through development activities and welfare schemes, focusing on the goal of a 'nava (new) Keralam'. Nilambur is an area where farmers face a lot of issues. How are their concerns being addressed? The lives and land of farmers are at risk. One of the most important issues is the applicable legislation, the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, which is a central law. There is strong criticism that it lacks provisions to protect farmers. It should be amended. The environment and wildlife must be protected, but then farmers should receive equal importance. Kerala has submitted a detailed plan to the central government, which has not been approved. There is a problem with all this. The government often says that it is not getting central funds. But it increases the salaries of PSC members while pretending not to see the problems faced by ASHA workers. Wouldn't people see through this? It's propaganda. ASHA workers are part of a central government scheme. States also play a role. The Left's stance is to accept them as workers who should be paid minimum wage. The Centre has not done that. When LDF came to power in 2016, their honorarium was `1,000. We increased it sevenfold, but it is still not enough.

10 candidates in fray for Nilambur bypoll in Kerala

Kozhikode: The stage is set for Nilambur bypoll as the deadline to withdraw nominations ended on Thursday. Of the 14 nominations cleared after scrutiny, four candidates, including a namesake of former MLA PV Anvar, withdrew. This leaves 10 candidates in the fray. Anvar, running as an independent, has been given the scissors symbol. Both UDF and LDF see the election as a key political battle. For UDF, reclaiming its traditional stronghold is crucial for candidate Aryadan Shoukath — son of veteran leader Aryadan Mohammed, who held the seat for 34 years — and opposition leader VD Satheesan ahead of the upcoming local body and assembly elections. LDF aims to retain the seat with M Swaraj, reinforcing its pitch for a third consecutive govt in 2026. UDF has framed the election as a public verdict on what it calls the LDF govt's 'nine-year misrule'. It has also tried to highlight the LDF's alleged 'anti-Malappuram stance', citing past remarks by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, politburo member A Vijayaraghavan and other CPM leaders. LDF, on the other hand, is eager to retain the seat with Swaraj. A win would support its narrative of continued public trust in its development agenda and governance. The LDF also hopes to benefit from internal rifts within the UDF, especially around the Anvar issue. Meanwhile, for Anvar, delivering a strong performance is key to his political survival. Initially, BJP appeared undecided about contesting Nilambur bypoll, calling it inconsequential with the assembly term ending next year. However, the party eventually fielded former Kerala Congress leader Mohan George. The NDA's election campaign was launched by Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi on Thursday. The bypoll will be held on June 19 and the votes will be counted on June 23.

TMC''s P V Anvar declares assets worth over Rs 52 crore in election affidavit

Last Updated: Malappuram(Kerala), Jun 3 (PTI) Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader P V Anvar, who is contesting in the Nilambur assembly bypoll, has declared assets, including both movable and immovable, of over Rs 52 crore and liabilities of Rs 20 crore in the election affidavit filed with his nomination papers on Monday. Anvar has in his affidavit disclosed movable assets of over Rs 18 crore and immovable property worth over Rs 34 crore. In 2021, he had declared assets worth over Rs 64 crore and liabilities of around Rs 17 crore. According to his affidavit, his two wives have total assets, including 1.2 kgs of gold each, worth over Rs 8 crore and Rs 3 crore, respectively. Anvar, who completed his pre-degree (class 11 and 12) education from Kozhikode University in 1985, also has liabilities of around Rs 20 crore, which includes loans of Rs 9 crore from various banks, his affidavit stated. Besides these, he is also facing 10 criminal cases for various offences including destruction of government property, leaking phone calls of government officials, leaking official secrets, defamation and making provocative speeches aimed at inciting violence, according to his affidavit. In none of these cases, mostly initiated between 2024 and 2025, charges have been framed against him, it said. Anvar, whose resignation as a Left-backed independent MLA paved the way for the by-election, filed his nomination after launching a new political front — Janakiya Prathipaksha Prathirodha Munnani (JPPM) — after the Congress-led UDF declined him a spot in the front. He, on Sunday, announced his decision to contest the bypoll, a day after he claimed he does not have the funds for it. PTI HMP HMP ADB First Published: June 03, 2025, 11:15 IST

CPM to name Nilambur bypoll candidate today; party shifts focus to consensus pick

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPM is set to announce its candidate for the Nilambur by-election on Friday. A state secretariat meeting will discuss potential candidates, and after consulting with party leadership in Malappuram, the official candidate will be revealed in Thiruvananthapuram. According to sources within the CPM, the leadership has carefully weighed its options. While there was initial support for nominating a CPM leader, the decision has shifted towards selecting a candidate who can garner broader consensus. This adjustment comes in light of the political upheaval within the UDF following P V Anvar's break from the Congress leadership. Initially, CPM state secretariat member M Swaraj was considered, but the party recognised the necessity of a candidate who appeals not only to leftist supporters but also to non-left and community voters. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the LDF is presently engaged in discussions on finalising its candidate for the Nilambur assembly by-election and the announcement will be made soon. Responding to queries about the bypoll at a press conference on Thursday, Pinarayi said the CPM-led front usually decides its candidates after the election is declared. When asked about Trinamool Congress leader P V Anvar, Pinarayi said the 'less said about him the better' as he has been rejected by all.
