Jeelugulova tribals rejoice on getting electricity for the first time in their hamlets

The tribal people of Jeelugulova hamlet of the Cheemalapadu panchyat in the Anakapalli district were in a jubilant mood as they danced in gay abandon to the tunes of Dhimsa on Sunday (June 1, 2025) night. They had enough reason to cheer as their village got electricity for the first time. The hilltop village, located atop Samalammakonda, has a population of 50 persons, belonging to the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) Kondh tribe. The villagers recall how they used to move with 'kagadalu' (traditional torches with wooden sticks lit at one end) to scare away wild animals apart from helping them in finding their way through the thickets. They used to mostly remain indoors after dark for fear of wild animals. 'There are eight families but electricity meters were installed in only six households, as two families had no Aadhaar card. Two poles were erected on the streets in our hamlet. We have been staying here for the past 16 years, before that our ancestors used to live here (Jajulabandha), some of them had died while others had migrated to other places in the Agency areas,' Korra Mahesh told The Hindu on Monday (June 2, 2025). 'Before coming here, we were living in Sadangi village of the G. Madugula mandal. We are very happy that electricity has finally arrived in our village. The line is being extended to Pasuvulabandha, another hamlet, towards the far end of the hill. The electricity department staff had a tough time in carrying the poles to the hilltop. Each pole had to be carried by six men, and we (tribal people) helped them in the task,' he recalls. 'The lack of a road to our village is a stumbling block in the development of our village. In the absence of drinking water taps, we have to fetch water from the 'voota' (spring), located about half-a-kilometre from our village,' he adds. The villagers had staged protests at the Zilla Parishad in the Visakhapatnam city on several occasions in the past seeking provision of electricity and formation of a road to their hamlet. The news was prominently reported in The Hindu had also other English dailies, apart from Telugu newspapers. The District Collector of Anakapalli visited Jeelugulova village in 2022 and directed the officials concerned to provide basic amenities in the hamlet. Narsipatnam RDO Ronanki Govinda Rao and other Divisional-level officials visited the village and subsequently the Aadhar and the ration cards were issued to the villagers. They were also promised power supply and drinking water facility. They were provided electricity facility under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM JANMAN) scheme. Korra Balaraju of Jeelugulova, and CPI-M district secretariat member K. Govinda Rao thanked the AP EPDCL Engineering officials and the Anakapalli district Collector.

Learning about the woes, he immediately issued the directives. On May 26, team of engineers and officials served the area and prepared a plan of building 1.86km PCC road, which was finally approve before Satyarthi's transfer. Along with the road, residents also demanded water, electricity and irrigation facilities. Engineer Blacius Lakra of rural works department (RWD), which prepared the detailed project report, told TOI, "We have now applied for no objection certificate from the forest department as 700 meters of the project come under it. GUNTUR: A quiet transformation is unfolding in the tribal regions of Palnadu district, as 51 Chenchu tribal habitations are being developed under two major Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs initiatives: Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) and Dharti Abhiyan—Janjatiya Grama Utkarsh Abhiyan (DA-JGUA). In Veldurthi, Macherla, Durgi, Karampudi, Bollapalli, and Rentachintala mandals, the district administration is charting plans to upgrade necessary infrastructure, including housing, roads, clean water supply, electricity, healthcare, Anganwadi centres and facilitating LPG connections to households under the PM-JANMAN scheme. The initiative spans 11 sectors and involves coordination among nine departments. In the second phase, 31 additional tribal habitations outside PVTG (Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group) areas will be covered as well. Parallelly, as many as 17 tribal habitations in Macherla, Durgi, Dachepalli, Achampet, and Bollapalli will gain access to 25 welfare schemes being implemented by 17 departments, under the DA-JGUA scheme. Emphasising a people-first approach, Palnadu District Collector Arun Babu informed that a special outreach drive from June 15 to 30 will allow residents to voice their concerns and access services. Families have been asked to bring Aadhaar cards, bank and employment documents, health and gas cards, utility bills, forest land records and housing documents to the camps. 'These efforts are about restoring dignity, trust, and hope,' the Collector affirmed.

The District Administration of Palnadu, under the guidance of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA), Government of India, will launch an intensive awareness campaign from June 15 to 30, 2025 to educate tribal communities about key welfare schemes, especially aimed at Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), such as the Chenchu population. The District Collector P. According to the 2011 census, there is a total of 7,235 PVTG Chenchu population with 2,143 households in 51 habitations, with a literacy rate of 35.1% in the district. The campaign is part of the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN), launched a couple of years back by MoTA, designed to uplift PVTG tribal communities by ensuring access to essential services. In the first phase, 51 Chenchu habitations in Veldurthi, Macherla, Durgi, Karampudi, Bollapalli, and Rentachintala mandals will be covered. With coordination from nine government departments, awareness sessions will highlight 11 essential schemes, including housing, drinking water, electricity, LPG connections, road connectivity, mobile medical units, and Anganwadi centres. The second phase will extend similar benefits to 31 Chenchu habitations in non-PVTG mandals of the district, following Central Government approval. Additionally, under the Dharati Abh-Janjatiya Grama Utkarsh Abhiyan (DA–JGUA), 17 habitations across five mandals — Macherla, Durgi, Dachepalli, Achampet, and Bollapalli — will be surveyed to identify infrastructure gaps. With coordination from 17 departments, awareness sessions will cover 25 welfare schemes to bridge the development divide. The District Administration, under Collector P. Arun Babu, will conduct these sessions through the respective Municipal Planning and Development Offices (MPDOs). Tribal residents are urged to attend with necessary documents such as Aadhaar, bank passbook, health card, job card, electricity bill, gas connection details, and land-related documents to resolve grievances and avail benefits effectively.
