Taupo Claims A Rising Star In The Culinary-Verse

Taupō is an emerging star in the culinary-verse. Five Taupō restaurants listed in the 2025 Cuisine Good Food Guide. Category awards and Cuisine hats will be announced 18 August. A rising star in the hospitality scene, Taupō has earned five listings in the 2025 edition of the Cuisine Good Food Guide — an independent guide showcasing New Zealand's outstanding talent and hottest venues. Three long-established Taupō restaurants — Brantry Eatery, Plateau Bar & Eatery and The Bistro — and two newer foodie hotspots, Embra (Taupō) and Hare & Copper (Turangi), have listed in the 2025 Cuisine Good Food Guide. Each restaurant is now in line for the prized Cuisine hats and Category awards due to be announced next week. It's the second consecutive year that Taupō has scored five nominations in the Guide, and Love Taupō General Manager Patrick Dault says 'this is clear confirmation that Taupō has what it takes to attract serious foodies.' 'Our thriving Taupō hospitality scene is on a roll, there's so much great food happening in town and around the region. Inclusion in the Cuisine Good Food Guide is not only a confirmation of excellence for these individual owners but also good news for our whole hospitality scene as it speaks to the high standards of the cuisine that our kitchens are serving up,' Dault says. 'Locals are definitely in the know but it's exciting to see out-of-towners and international visitors increasingly discovering the top notch quality of our fine dining destinations. The busy year-round schedule of weekend events in Taupō is a significant driver for local hospitality businesses. The secret is getting out.' Brantry Eatery is an iconic Taupō dining experience offering an inventive and beautifully plated seasonal menu. This family affair, operated by super talented sisters Prue and Felicity Campbell, has regularly featured in the Cuisine Guide over the last few years. Embra, in the talented Michelin-trained hands of owner-operators Phill and Nora Blackburne, serves up delicately-styled, contemporary fine dining. Opened in 2023, Embra has earned a two-hat rating and made three appearances in the Guide. Turangi local Hare & Copper is the creation of Andrew Wood and Liliana Calva who moved to Turangi in 2019 with a dream of owning their own restaurant. Opened in 2020, this welcoming eatery does thoughtful seasonal shared plates, and listed in the Cuisine Guide for the first time in 2024. Plateau Bar & Eatery — now in its 21st year — specialises in small plates inspired by the Pacific Ring of Fire, a fusion of fresh vibrant flavours from Polynesia and beyond. Owners Frankie and Kate Walker are thrilled to be included in the Guide for the second year running. The Bistro, behind its unassuming exterior and catch-cry 'simple but nice', has been featuring in the Cuisine Guide since first opening in December 2012. Owner chef Jude Messenger, whose CV includes stints at Huka Lodge and time abroad, has earned a one-hat rating for fine European-style dining executed with considerable flair. Cuisine Good Food Guide 2025 More than 300 establishments have been named to feature in the Cuisine Good Food Guide 2025 which is New Zealand's only national and independent restaurant guide. The restaurants span the length of the country and showcase the top hospitality establishments, from fine dining and regional destinations to metropolitan and neighbourhood favourites. Kelli Brett, editor and owner of Cuisine Magazine, says: "At Cuisine, we fully embrace the responsibility that comes with being a national media platform that speaks to a global audience, and it's always exciting to present these inspiring awards and the accompanying restaurant guide each year. We are passionate about recognizing excellence and also creating a supportive network within our hospitality industry. It has never been so important to effectively showcase New Zealand as a premium dining destination and entice the rest of the world to visit." The 20 category winners and more than 95 hatted restaurants – including the American Express Restaurant of the Year and Cuisine Chef of the Year – will be announced at the highly anticipated Cuisine Good Food Awards event, presented on 18 August. Curated by a national panel of 30 judges, comprising food-and-drink writers, critics, chefs and hospitality professionals and led by food and drink expert Kerry Tyack, the Cuisine Good Food Awards and Guide for 2025 is designed to showcase the country's outstanding talent and hottest venues, with the aim of encouraging patronage and showcasing New Zealand cuisine to local and international audiences.

Top 5 strongest earthquakes since 1900: Where does Russia's 8.8‑Magnitude terrifying quake rank in the all-time list?

A powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake rocked Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on July 30 2025, triggering tsunami alerts across the Pacific. It sent waves that reached Japan, Hawaii, and the U.S. West Coast, though thankfully, damage and injuries have been limited so far. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, this quake is the most powerful to hit since Japan's devastating 2011 Tohoku event. Since seismographs have been used (starting around 1900), only a handful of earthquakes have been measured higher. Here's how the top five stack up, and where today's quake ranks among the strongest ever recorded. Top 5 most powerful earthquakes since 1900 According to USGS data and multiple expert sources (FactMonster, Guardian), here are the five largest recorded quakes by magnitude: 1. Valdivia, Chile (May 22, 1960) – Magnitude 9.5 perfect storm. The strongest recorded quake ever, it triggered an enormous tsunami that killed over 1,600 and devastated coastal towns across the Pacific. 2. Prince William Sound, Alaska (March 27, 1964) – Magnitude 9.2–9.3. Known as the Good Friday Earthquake. Caused massive landslides and tsunami waves up to 67 m high, killing over 130 people and causing huge flooding. 3. Sumatra, Indonesia (Dec 26, 2004) – Magnitude 9.1–9.3. The deadly Indian Ocean quake triggered a tsunami responsible for around 230,000 deaths across countries, including Thailand, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. 4. Tohoku, Japan (March 11, 2011) – Magnitude 9.0–9.1. One of the most devastating in recent memory. It caused a massive tsunami and triggered meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, killing over 18,000 people. 5. Severo‑Kurilsk, Kamchatka, Russia (Nov 4, 1952) – Magnitude 9.0. A major tsunami hit local settlements and even reached Hawaii, though fatalities were reportedly low compared to the scale. Where does today's Russia 8.8 earthquake rank among them? Today's 8.8‑magnitude quake off Kamchatka now ranks just outside the all‑time top five (at 6th position), tying with two other notable events: the 2010 Chile Maule quake (8.8) and the 1906 Ecuador–Colombia quake (also around 8.8). 🚨HOLY SH*T! 6TH STRONGEST EARTHQUAKE EVER JUST HIT THE PLANET!Upgraded to Magnitude 8.8, the quake in Petropavlovsk, Russia now ties with Chile (2010) and Ecuador (1906).This is a once-in-a-generation alerts are active across Hawaii, Japan, Alaska, and the… It is the strongest recorded since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, underscoring its rarity. Experts emphasise that only a handful of quakes have ever measured above 9.0, and today's event marks a rare and significant seismic milestone. Why do these horrific earthquakes matter? All of these top earthquakes occurred along tectonic subduction zones, the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where one crustal plate dives beneath another, leading to powerful megathrust quakes. Events like the 1960 Chile and 2011 Japan earthquakes reshaped global standards for tsunami warning systems and building codes, saving lives in subsequent disasters. 3. The earthquake that occurred in Japan with a magnitude of 9.1 was on March 11, 2011. This devastating event, also known as the Great East Japan Earthquake or the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, caused widespread damage and triggered a massive tsunami that led to a nuclear disaster at… The new Russia earthquake serves as a reminder of the ongoing seismic hazard in these active zones and highlights the importance of preparation and rapid forecasting.

‘You rarely see a panicking Russian': Surgeons continue critical surgery during 8.8 earthquake

A powerful 8.8 earthquake hit near Russia's Pacific coast on July 30. It caused tsunami warnings in Hawaii and along the U.S. West Coast. In Kamchatka, a Russian peninsula, doctors kept performing surgery during the quake. A video shows how doctors calmly handled the situation and continued the critical surgery without stopping. 'Doctors in Kamchatka kept calm during the powerful quake — and never stopped the surgery. They stayed with the patient until the end. The patient is doing well, according to the Health Ministry,' RT posted on Twitter (now X) while sharing the viral video. The earthquake, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire activity, caused 3–4 metre waves along Russia's eastern coast. Evacuations were ordered in several coastal areas. Social media users hailed the effort. One of them called the doctors 'brave dear people'. 'You rarely see a panicking Russian,' came from another. 'Imagine waking up from surgery and learning that you were just unconscious through the 6th largest earthquake in recorded history,' wrote a social media user. 'This is such a relief from the repetitive "Oh My God!" of Americans! Quick, reasonable action without a word,' wrote another who praised the calmness of the Russian doctors. Another wrote, 'Praying right now for the Russian people near the Tsunami. Praying also for all the other people in/near the vicinity of the Tsunami. May no one get hurt!' 'In the US they would have stopped the surgery. because there is no insurance code number for earthquakes,' commented another. After tsunami waves hit Hawaii and parts of the US West Coast, the alert level in Hawaii was lowered to a tsunami advisory. People in Oahu who had moved to higher ground were told they could return. However, Alaska, Oregon, Washington and parts of California still remain under tsunami advisories, according to the ABC News. A warning was in place for the coastline between Cape Mendocino and the Oregon border. Waves were seen in Monterey and San Francisco. According to officials, a tsunami warning means dangerous flooding and strong currents are expected. A tsunami watch means a tsunami might happen. Hawaii Governor Josh Green said no damage had been reported, but more waves could come. "So far, though, at the moment, so good," ABC News quoted Green as saying.

Russia's Far East Suffers Damage From Earthquake and Tsunami

The extent of damage in Russia from the powerful earthquake and tsunami off the Kamchatka peninsula was still unclear as of Wednesday morning. The undersea earthquake struck at 11:24 a.m. local time on Tuesday, 78 miles from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchastky, the administrative seat of Kamchatka Oblast, according to the United States Geological Survey. Minutes later, Gov. Vladimir Solodov placed Kamchatka under a tsunami warning. Gov. Valery Limarenko of Sakhalin Oblast declared an emergency in the Severo-Kurilsk district, south of Kamchatka. Videos showed seawater inundating coastal buildings in Severo-Kurilsk on Paramushir island. Paramushir and Shumshu, both part of the Kuril Islands, were placed under a tsunami warning soon after the quake. There were no casualties reported from the tsunami, and all 2,400 residents of Severo-Kurilsk had been evacuated, Mr. Limarenko said on Telegram. A port and a fish factory had been flooded by the tsunami, Mr. Limarenko said. In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the facade of a kindergarten was among the infrastructure damaged by the quake. Sergey Lebedev, Kamchatka's minister for emergency situations, said that no one was injured as the kindergarten was empty when the earthquake hit. Kamchatka authorities advised businesses to close from 1 p.m. local time, an hour and a half after the earthquake struck. They also closed volcanic parks and trekking routes in the peninsula's southern tip for the next five days, warning of seismological activity. Kamchatka has more than 100 active volcanoes that are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

'We can't forget 2021': Indonesia's West Sulawesi prepares for the next big quake

Activities which included a tabletop exercise and a command post simulation, were designed to strengthen coordination between agencies within the emergency command system. 17 Jun 2025 02:45pm This aerial picture shows motorists waiting in a queue to pass through a section of road affected by a landslide caused by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Majene, West Sulawesi on Jan 19, 2021. - (Photo by ADEK BERRY / AFP) JAKARTA - The devastation of Jan 16, 2021, still lingers in West Sulawesi, when a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck before dawn, killing 105 people, injuring thousands, and causing widespread destruction across the province. Four years later, local officials, emergency responders and community members returned to the epicentre on Monday not to mourn the tragedy of the past, but to prepare for the possibility of it happening again. In a large-scale simulation, the province tested its emergency response to a modelled 7.5-magnitude earthquake striking the coastal districts of Majene and Mamuju, with a scenario projecting over 1,000 fatalities and 200,000 displaced residents. Coordinated by Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the exercise brought together government officials, military and police units, humanitarian organisations, and local communities in a test of speed, coordination and resilience. BNPB senior trainer Apriyuanda G. Bayu Pradana stated that the activities, which included a tabletop exercise and a command post simulation, were designed to strengthen coordination between agencies within the emergency command system. West Sulawesi lies along the seismically active Mamuju thrust fault and remains at high risk of major earthquakes and tsunamis. Acting provincial secretary Herdin Ismail said the drill reflected the joint commitment of BNPB and the provincial government to cultivate a culture of disaster awareness and strengthen local preparedness as the frontline in disaster management. "We hope this helps all sectors understand their responsibilities, respond swiftly, and coordinate effectively during real emergencies," he said. As Indonesia sits atop the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire, simulations like these are becoming not just routine but essential. - BERNAMA More Like This
