Amyl and The Sniffers, Troye Sivan, Kevin Parker Win Big at 2025 APRA Music Awards
Australian punks Amyl and The Sniffers have taken out the song of the year at the 2025 APRA Music Awards, held Wednesday (April 30) at Melbourne Town Hall. The Melbourne group received the coveted peer-voted award for their track 'U Should Not Be Doing That,' which was released as the lead single for their 2024 album Cartoon Darkness. The record itself became the group's second consecutive release to hit No. 2 on the ARIA charts, while the single received a nomination for best video at the 2024 ARIA Awards. Troye Sivan, meanwhile, was named songwriter of the year, just shy of the one-year anniversary of 'Rush' being named song of the year at the 2024 ceremony. 'Songwriting is my favorite thing that I get to do. I think it'll be something that I do for the rest of my life,' Sivan said of his win. 'I feel like it's, one of the greatest gifts that I was born with. Not even the ability to write a good song, just the ability to create at all.' While Otis Pavlovic and Royel Maddell of Royel Otis received the emerging songwriter of the year award just months after winning four trophies at the ARIA Awards, Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker emerged as the night's big winner, being honored in the categories of most performed Australian work and most performed pop work. In both instances, Parker's win was for Dua Lipa's 'Houdini,' which he co-wrote alongside Lipa and international writers Caroline Ailin, Danny Harle and Tobias Jesso Jr. Released in November 2023, the single topped the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, and reached a respectable No. 11 on the Hot 100. Sia's 'Unstoppable' was named most performed Australian work overseas, while Tate McRae's 'Greedy' took out most performed international work. King Stingray, Ziggy Alberts, Make Them Suffer, Kaiit, Lithe, and Dom Dolla also emerged victorious in their respective genre categories, while Kylie Minogue took out the previously-announced Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music. The 2025 edition of the APRAs cemented 'another huge year for Australian music, both at home and overseas,' comments APRA AMCOS CEO Dean Ormston. 'It's heartwarming to see so many first-time winners this year, showcasing the incredible breadth of talent Australia produces, and it's a testament to the opportunity of Australia becoming a global songwriting powerhouse,' he added. 'With an election just days away, we hope that both sides of government can see the immense talent we have here, and the opportunities to build a stronger, fairer, more vibrant future for Australian music, recognising our music as the global cultural powerhouse and valuable export that it so clearly is.' Established in 1982, the Australasian Performing Right Association's annual songwriters' ceremony is one of the Australian music industry's most treasured events, a worthy counterpart to Britain's Ivor Novello Awards. Massive Attack Throw Their Support Behind Kneecap: ‘Gaza Is the Story'
English trip-hop outfit Massive Attack have shared their support for Belfast hip-hop trio Kneecap in response the controversy that has followed their pro-Palestinian messaging. Massive Attack shared their comments on Instagram on Wednesday (April 30), criticizing the disproportionate amount of condemnation that Kneecap have received when compared to the attention received by pertinent matters in Gaza. More from Billboard CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso: The Duo Disrupting Latin Music's Boundaries With Flair, Friendship and Fearlessness Don Toliver & Doja Cat Hit the Fast Lane for New Song 'Lose My Mind': Watch the Music Video Turnstile Shares New Video & Songs Featuring Vocals From Dev Hynes & Paramore's Hayley Williams: Listen 'If senior politicians can find neither the time, nor the words to condemn, say, the murder of fifteen voluntary aid workers in Gaza, or the illegal starvation of a civilian population as a method of warfare, or the killing of thousands & thousands of children in the same territory, by a state in possession of the highest precision weapons on earth; how much notice should a music festival take of their moral advice on booking performing acts?' the band wrote. 'As a band that has spoken publicly for more than 30 years about the illegal occupation, apartheid system and killing with impunity of thousands of Palestinians, we are hyper aware of the both the human cost of abject political silence, and the commercial implications of publicly expressing solidarity with an oppressed people.' Kneecap's overtly political messaging made global headlines following their appearance at the Coachella festival in April, where they projected strong anti-Israel sentiments during their set – sentiments which they had claimed were censored during their first weekend appearance. 'Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people,' the projected messages read. 'It is being enabled by the U.S. government who arm and fund Israel despite their war crimes. F–k Israel; free Palestine.' The backlash to Kneecap's comments were swift and varied, with Sharon Osbourne calling for the band's work visas to be revoked ahead of another North American tour later in the year, while the trio would soon split with their booking agent, Independent Artist Group. More recently, Kneecap issued an apology for archival footage which showed the group allegedly calling for the death of British MPs (members of parliament). Filmed at a London gig in November 2023, it appears to show one member of the band saying: 'The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP.' At the time, the Conservative Party – also known as the Tories – were in government with a large majority. 'Language matters of course. The hideous murders of elected politicians Jo Cox and David Amess means there's no scope for flippancy or recklessness,' Massive Attack continued. 'But do politicians and right-wing journalists strategically concocting moral outrage over the stage utterings of a young punk band, while simultaneously obfuscating or even ignoring a genocide happening in real time (including the killing of journalists in unprecedented numbers) have any right to intimidate festival events into acts of political censorship? 'Kneecap are not the story,' they concluded. 'Gaza is the story. Genocide is the story. And the silence, acquiescence and support of those crimes against humanity by the elected British government is the real story. Solidarity with all artists with the moral courage to speak out against Israeli war crimes, and the ongoing persecution and slaughter of the Palestinian people.' Soon after Massive Attack's message, London-based independent label Heavenly Recordings also shared a statement which was signed by Massive Attack alongside Fontaines D.C., Pulp, The Pogues, Thin Lizzy, Sleaford Mods, Paul Weller, and myriad others. 'This past week has seen a clear, concerted attempt to censor and ultimately deplatform the band Kneecap,' the statement read. 'In Westminster and the British media, senior political figures have been openly engaged in a campaign to remove Kneecap from the public eye, with veiled threats being made over their scheduled performances at gigs, outdoor events and music festivals, including Glastonbury.' 'In a democracy, no political figures or political parties should have the right to dictate who does and does not play at music festivals or gigs that will be enjoyed by thousands of people,' it continued. 'The question of agreeing with Kneecap's political views is irrelevant: it is in the key interests of every artist that all creative expression be protected in a society that values culture, and that this interference campaign is condemned and ridiculed. 'Furthermore, it is also the duty of key leadership figures in the music industry to actively defend artistic freedom of expression — rather than seek to silence views which oppose their own.' Argentina's Ca7riel and Paco Amoroso Bring Their Explosive Live Show to New York's Bowery Ballroom: Concert Review
Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso are a Latin/hip-hop/multi-genre duo who are superstars in their native Argentina and much of Latin America, but until recently were little known in the U.S. outside the Latin music genre. That began changing first with their NPR Tiny Desk Concert last fall, then with their incendiary appearances at Coachella earlier this month. The duo's 2024 debut album, 'Baño María,' featured their strong singing and rapping over largely electronic instrumentation, and although their new EP 'Papota' has live instrumentation from their band, it does not prepare you for what an explosive and exciting live band it is — and not only because the group brought the same set to New York's 575-capacity Bowery Ballroom that they played at Coachella and in stadiums on the recently completed Lollapalooza South America tour. On Tuesday night, they practically erupted off of the Bowery stage. The duo — who have comic, antic stage presence that belies their serious musical chops — are accompanied by nine top-flight musicians: a three-piece horn section, two backing singers, a keyboardist, percussionist, bassist and a powerhouse drummer (who, astonishingly, has a tattoo of the logo for '70s progressive rockers Emerson Lake & Palmer on his arm) — while Ca7riel played guitar on several songs. All of the musicians' formidable skills are on full display in their live set, which finds them changing direction in a head-spinning but still fluid manner: They'll be playing a Latin-flavored song and then make a hard left into hip-hop and then serve up a smooth '80s R&B-flavored number that actually had my companion saying, 'This reminds me of Bone Thugs N Harmony'; a couple of others veered into cool-jazz territory found the horn section evoking mid-'70s Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind & Fire (and featured a stinging jazzy solo from keyboardist Javier Burin). In just one example of the group's versatility, Ca7riel — who happens to be a blazing guitarist — peeled off some tasteful, jazzy licks on one song, even scat-singing along with his solo a la George Benson, and on the next was rapping loudly while pulling elastic faces and jumping up and down. Even though the joyfully enthusiastic audience knew the words to all of band's songs — nearly all of which were from the album and EP — and sang along passionately, you truly never knew what was coming next. But for all of their musical expertise and undeniable chops, most of all Ca7riel and Paco are fun, playing with the audience, making faces, doing a comical exercise routine to their latest single 'El Dia Del Amigo' (which they took to even more comical ends on 'Jimmy Fallon' earlier this week). And the musicians all looked like they were having a great time too: Clad in more or less matching outfits — white shirts with black shorts, which bassist Felipe Brandy customized with hilarious oversized sunglasses and sock garters — they were laughing, goofing around and cheering each other throughout the set, all without missing a single beat. There were even lasers. Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso will be on tour in North America for most of the spring, and come back in the summer for Lollapalooza in Chicago and presumably more dates. Even if you don't speak Spanish or have little familiarity with Latin music, you'd be hard pressed to find a more entertaining live show.
