Nashville Zoo's pudu welcomes baby just in time for Mother's Day. Meet the 1.5 pound baby

Mother's Day came a bit early at the Nashville Zoo by welcoming its newest fawn, a male southern pudu. The young fawn was introduced to the world over Mother's Day weekend, but the newest resident came into the world on April 28 at a whopping 1.7 pounds, and became the first southern pudu born at the Nashville Zoo. He's also the first for his mom, Bosa, and dad, Pacu. Zoo veterinarian Dr. Louden Wright said first-time mom Bosa was 'doing a great job.' 'We see a lot of animals struggle with their first offspring, but Bosa is taking to it naturally. Both her and the fawn are thriving,' Wright said. The zoo posted a Mother's Day tribute to the newly minted pudu mom on May 11. "Happy Mother's Day from first-time mom, Bosa, her adorable new fawn and all of us at the Zoo! 💝" Here are some facts about pudus and what makes them special. Pudus are the smallest species of deer in the world, with the southern pudu being native in southern Chili and southwestern Argentina and are often found in humid rainforest areas, according to the University of Michigan School of Zoology. The deer consists on a mainly vegetarian diet. The current population of the deer is unknown, but experts believe that it is around 10,000. The small number of the pudus has it on a Species Survival Plan. 'Southern pudus are on an Association of Zoos and Aquariums provisional Species Survival Plan, which means every animal is crucial to the North American population,' Nashville Zoo said in a statement. The Nashville Zoo has not released a name for the latest addition. This article originally appeared on Nashville Tennessean: Nashville Zoo welcomes fawn of the world's smallest deer. Meet the pudu

Boost for development, economy: Nizam

Published on: Sunday, May 11, 2025 Published on: Sun, May 11, 2025 Text Size: Assistant Minister to the Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan THE 2025 Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) serves as a development catalyst and has the potential to boost the local economy, said Assistant Minister to the Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan. The Apas Assemblyman said the initiative delivers government services to the people to help them raise their living standards. 'When large-scale programmes like this are brought to Tawau, we get upgrades in many aspects — particularly in street lighting... roads and other infrastructure. It also creates business opportunities for local entrepreneurs in the district and surrounding areas to set up stalls to promote their products. 'Although PMR runs for only three days (May 9 to 11), the benefits to the people do not end when the programme concludes. I hope all ministries and agencies involved will continue to serve and support those needing various guidance,' he said. He thanked the Performance Acceleration and Coordination Unit (Pacu), the Prime Minister's Office and the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry (Kuskop) for choosing Tawau to host the programme this year. 'The programme was held in Kota Kinabalu last year. Many people from the east coast of Sabah could not attend due to the distance (about 450km),' he said, urging Tawau residents to take the opportunity to attend the event and get information on the services offered by federal and state agencies. 'PMR significantly benefits urban and rural communities by providing the public direct access to government agency services. This programme serves as a platform for interaction between the people and the Government while directly conveying the principles of the Madani policies,' he added. Meanwhile, over 100 products specially flown from Perlis are featured at the 2025 Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) here, including garam belacan (fruit dip), belacan madu (shrimp paste), fermented fish and cordial made from Harumanis mango. Administrative Assistant for the Entrepreneurship Portfolio at the Perlis State Secretary's Office, Syazana Afiqah Nahar, said the Sabah PMR is an ideal platform to showcase Perlis's products and heritage to Sabahans and promote the State's tourism industry in conjunction with Visit Perlis 2024–2025 campaign. 'Among the products are various types of belacan…and Harumanis cordial, produced by the Koperasi Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti Anak Istimewa Perlis, a cooperative which plays an active role in supporting the development of children with special needs and disabilities in Perlis,' she said. Syazana Afiqah said they are also promoting tourist attractions in Perlis through various souvenirs, including fridge magnets that highlight the unique features of these locations. 'We hope programmes like this can provide an opportunity for the people of Sabah to get to know Perlis better,' she said. A visitor, Nuri Juliana Majuntis, 45, said she bought the fermented lampam fish, which brought back the nostalgia that reminds her of the visit to the State two years ago. 'I love Perlis fermented lampam fish. The taste is unique and unlike other fermented fish. I'm so happy to be able to buy it here again. I've purchased a lot to keep and share with my family,' she added. Irmawati Abdul Kadir, 38, said she was interested in the Harumanis cordial, which she claimed had the authentic taste of the state's famous Harumanis mango. 'When I heard that it's made from the famous Harumanis mango from Perlis, I immediately wanted to buy it. Unfortunately, the stock is limited. I'll try to order it online,' she said. The booth, managed by the Perlis Economic Planning Division, is in the sales section of PMR 2025. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Speaking at the 'Program Bakti Madani Subis' at Dewan Sepupok, Niah today, the federal Deputy Health Minister said Subis' rich natural assets, including pristine beaches, cultural events, and heritage sites, had made it an ideal future hub for agro-tourism and eco-tourism in northern Sarawak. He noted that the district is already well-known for its oil agricultural output, particularly oil palm cultivation and local products such as 'kelulut' (stingless bee) honey from Bekenu and 'belacan' (shrimp paste) from the Bekenu-Niah area. 'Subis also serves as a strategic stop-over point for travellers heading to Suai, Niah and Bintulu,' he said. 'Destinations such as Tanjung Bungai Beach, Peliau Beach, Tusan Beach, the Miri-SIbuti Coral Reef, as well as Lambir National Park, offer strong tourism potential.' ‘Baby boom' continues at Nashville Zoo with birth of southern pudu

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – With Mother's Day coming up this weekend, the Nashville Zoo is celebrating its first birth of a southern pudu, the world's smallest deer species. The male fawn was born on April 28 to first-time parents, Bosa and Pacu. According to officials, he weighs 1.7 pounds, 'about the size of a small bag of sugar, making it the sweetest gift for Nashville Zoo this Mother's Day.' The zoo said southern pudus are on an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) provisional Species Survival Plan (SSP), which means every animal is crucial to the North American population. The couple was introduced as a breeding pair in 2024 to help bolster the population of southern pudus at AZA accredited facilities. Williamson County agriculture from Gov. Bill Lee's family farm Historically, officials said this species has been difficult to breed successfully, so the addition of this fawn marks a major win for conservation. 'As a first-time mom, Bosa is doing a great job taking care of the fawn,' said Nashville Zoo Veterinarian Dr. Louden Wright. 'We see a lot of animals struggle with their first offspring, but Bosa is taking to it naturally. Both her and the fawn are thriving!' According to the zoo, the fawn will stay with his mother for at least the next year, but when he starts to near sexual maturity, he'll be placed at another AZA facility and paired for breeding to help maintain the North American population. The Southern pudu eats a variety of vegetation, including leaves from shrubs and small trees, fruits, vegetables, bark, bamboo, ferns, vines, grass, flowers, nuts, fungi, and succulent sprouts. Vital to their habitat, Southern pudus make up 50% of Chilean pumas' diets. Additionally, Southern pudus can modify the abundance, composition, and growth of plants in their habitat, and aid in seed dispersal. Protecting this species ensures their natural habitat remains a functional ecosystem. According to the IUCN Red List, Southern pudus are listed as near threatened with its population decreasing. The main conservation threats to pudus, particularly the southern pudu, are habitat loss due to deforestation and fragmentation, predation by domestic dogs, and poaching. Other threats include competition with introduced species like red deer and wild boar, and potential disease transmission from domestic animals. Nashville Zoo ⏩ Officials said the southern pudu's birth was part of a continuing 'baby boom.' Since the fall, the zoo has welcomed two Komodo dragons hatchlings; a clouded leopard cub, even though she died a month later; and a red river hog piglet. 'Additionally, Pocket Talk sessions will feature discussions on various important topics including health, education, cybersecurity, and current issues closely related to public interest. 'At the pavilion, there will be booths by the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), Recoda, and other agencies, which will provide information on the Sarawak and Madani government's numerous programmes and initiatives that have been carried out for the benefit of the people,' he said. Moreover, there will be a Rahmah Sale by two major supermarkets in Miri offering daily necessities at affordable prices to the local community, as well as a Recoda Entrepreneur Carnival where entrepreneurs can market their businesses and products, he added. Other activities lined-up are the People's Concert to be held on May 10 outside the Miri Indoor Stadium, featuring performances from artistes like Baby Shima, Ricky Andrewson, and Alleycats; 'Battle of the Bands'; zumba sessions; children's colouring competition; and various family-friendly attractions.
