Perlis cops intercept 365kg of syabu in RM13m bust, suspect linked to drug network

KANGAR, June 2 — Perlis police seized over 365 kilogrammes (kg) of syabu (methamphetamine) estimated to be worth RM13.14 million and detained a 40-year-old man at Kampung Belat Batu, Beseri near Padang Besar yesterday. Its police chief, Datuk Muhammad Abdul Halim said the drug seizure and arrest, based on information received, were carried out by a police team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN), of the Perlis contingent police headquarters (IPK) at 3.30am. He said before the arrest, the suspect was seen alighting from a Proton Waja car and heading towards another car, a Toyota Vios. 'The results of an inspection on the Toyota Vios car found 17 stitched bags containing drugs suspected to be methamphetamine, believed to have originated from Thailand,' he said at a press conference at the Perlis IPK here today. Muhammad said initial investigations found that the suspect is believed to have used a forest area in the Padang Besar district as a transit point before the drugs were sent to the southern part of the country, with the amount of the illicit substance being enough for 3.6 million addicts. He said the initial urine screening of the man found him positive for methamphetamine and he possessed past criminal records related to drug cases. 'The suspect has been remanded for seven days starting June 1 (yesterday) and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Police are tracking down another suspect who fled to assist in the investigation,' he said. Meanwhile, Muhammad also said that a 30-year-old Thai man was arrested by the police along with the seizure of two packages of compressed ganja (cannabis), weighing two kilogrammes, hidden in a garbage bin in the Taman Singgah Sana area, Padang Besar at 2.15am yesterday. 'The drugs are estimated to be worth RM6,200 and can be used by around 20,000 addicts The suspect was also found to be positive for methamphetamine. The man was also remanded for seven days starting yesterday, and the investigation is being conducted under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,' he added. — Bernama

PADANG BESAR, May 28 — The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) of Perlis seized various undeclared goods, frozen chicken and motorcycle tyres, worth a total of RM645,832.52 recently. Perlis Customs director Ismail Hashim said the seizures, made between May 5 and May 20, included cigarettes, liquor and tyres totalling RM379,756.52 while the frozen chicken seized was valued at RM266,076. 'The estimated tax and duties from the seizure is RM196,173.50,' he told a media conference at the enforcement store here today, adding that the 28,008 kilogrammes (kg) of frozen chicken was seized during an inspection of a container at the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) Complex here on May 5. The seizure of 7,526 motorcycle tyres worth RM345,009 was discovered during an inspection of two containers at Port Klang, Selangor on May 20. Both cases are being investigated under Section 133(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967 for making incorrect declarations or falsifying documents. On May 17, Perlis Customs carried out two raids, one on a premises in Taiping, Perak where they seized 24,210 sticks of cigarettes and 113.25 litres of liquor worth a total of RM11,173.52; and the other in Sungai Petani where they seized 73,040 sticks of cigarettes worth RM23,574. Ismail said investigations into these two seizures are being carried out under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 possessing, importing or exporting goods that are subject to duty or prohibited without proper authorisation. — Bernama

Padang Besar fishing outing ends in tragedy as 25-year-old engineer drowns in lake

KANGAR, May 10 — A 25-year-old engineer drowned yesterday in the Timah Tasoh Freshwater Lake near Beseri, Padang Besar, after he reportedly failed to climb back onto a boat while in deep water following a fishing trip with a friend. Padang Besar deputy police chief Supt Sarih Salleh said the victim, Muhammad Zamhareer Zulkifli, was found by firefighters during a search and rescue operation at 2.45 pm, about five metres from where he was believed to have fallen into the lake. 'Initial investigations revealed that the victim and his 24-year-old friend had gone fishing on a boat at the lake around 7 am. After they finished fishing, their boat became stuck in shallow water,' he said in a statement today. The two attempted to push the boat into deeper water, but the victim was unable to climb back aboard and is believed to have fallen in and drowned. His friend's attempt to rescue him failed and the police received a distress call at 11.40 am. The body has been sent to Tuanku Fauziah Hospital (HTF) in Kangar for a post-mortem and further investigations are ongoing. — Bernama
