A wise bear always keeps a marmalade sandwich in his hat in case of emergency, according to Paddington.
A wise beer lover may consider this Paddington Marmalade IPA from Holgate Brewhouse instead.
The Paddington Marmalade IPA made its first appearance last year in kegs only as part of the brewer's 25 Years of Beers anniversary celebrations but, like the sequel in the film series, is returning to improve on the original.
This traditional English-style IPA takes you on a journey, not from Peru to London, but though old-school bitterness, jammy citrus and touch of toffee-sweet malt from the English Crystal.
It mixes all-Englilsh Admiral, First Gold, Golding and Target hops, the first two well known for their citrus character and orange aromas, the latter countering this with sweet floral and spice notes. There's also a hint of Mandarina Bavaria to drive home the beer's breakfast spread theme, as well as some additional orange peel.
But it's the English hops that are the star of this show.
It pours a deep gold, almost orange, as one would expect, with a frothy head and citrus notes on the nose.
There's a strong bitterness up front before the the orange peel, spiced citrus rind and jammy orange flavour kick in, though the marmalade never overwhelms, while the malt delivers a rich, toffee undertone.
It balances out for a smoother than expected finish.
It's nice having a bear around the house.
With an ABV of 5.7 per cent, it's best to wait until after breakfast and perhaps share it with mates.
