PETER HITCHENS: The march of facial recognition cameras is so sinister. Police say they get results... but they send a shiver down my spine and they should yours too

Hurrying into London 's Paddington Station the other evening, late for my train, I was amazed to see a large white van with odd-shaped devices and aerials on its roof, guarded by long, white, sinister cameras on heavy black tripods and adorned with a prominent label declaring 'Live facial recognition in operation'. It had an alien, disturbing appearance, though nobody bothered me when I snatched a quick picture of it as part of my own perpetual surveillance of modern Britain. A relaxed young woman in jeans was (as I recall) munching a sandwich in its open side door, and did not look either as if she had just been captured or as if she was part of a snatch squad, but who knows, these days?

I moved to the 'new Cotswolds' after nearly 40 years in the city. But I can't help feeling bitter about losing my old life... this is the brutal truth about rural living: KATE SPICER

For nearly 40 years visiting my friends and relatives in the West Country was lovely, but returning to London 's Paddington Station, past walls covered in graffiti and tower blocks, always gave me a comforting thrill. It's home and where my life is. Or was. I felt a sort of grief leaving the North Kensington neighbourhood I had spent 35 years getting to know and moving to Somerset 100 miles west.

Rise of 'Lime bike leg': That's the epidemic of shattered limbs and mangled knees caused by the 86lb bikes. Now doctors and victims reveal the danger and say: 'I'm NEVER going on one of those again'

On a warm Saturday afternoon in west London, Theo thought he had found the perfect shortcut home to avoid waiting for the bus from Paddington station. Minutes later, he was lying on the pavement in agony – not a victim of a traffic accident but of the electric bike he'd hired for £1.

Watch: Robert Jenrick confronts TfL ‘fare dodgers' in social media video

Robert Jenrick has released a video of himself confronting alleged fare dodgers on the London Underground, as he claimed lawbreakers are 'chipping away at society'. The shadow justice secretary visited Paddington Station where he filmed several alleged fare dodgers appearing to break the law. The former Conservative leadership contender is also seen reporting a suspected fare dodger to officials, telling him: 'You're on camera, mate, you're bang to rights'. Mr Jenrick adds: 'The state needs to reassert itself, and go after lawbreakers.'
