An American family that recently relocated to Shela, on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, is finding it difficult to settle into daily life, just a month into their year-long stay in India.
Sharing his experience on Reddit, the man said he shifted to Ahmedabad on behalf of his employer for about a year. He said, 'We are enjoying the food (I enjoy the Pan :-))," adding that his family is starting to feel bored and somewhat isolated.
'We would like to get engaged a bit more with the community," he wrote, adding that while he has some coworkers to bond with, his family has yet to find meaningful connections.
They Are Seeking Help
Seeking help from the local community, he asked if it's possible to find a private teacher or tutor to help with Gujarati. 'I would also like to know if there are some social activities in which foreigners would be welcome, sometimes I suspect we are so unusual here that people are afraid to approach us," he shared.
Did Internet Offer Help?
The post quickly garnered attention, with several social media users chiming in to offer helpful suggestions.
One person commented, 'Navratri is coming up, maybe learn garba and you will have a good chance of making a lot of friends in Navratri."
Another wrote, 'We play pickleball a few times a week if you would like to join."
'You can join PaddlePlay, the Pickleball community. They're very welcoming and it's friendly," wrote the next.
'Just ask them to join any garba classes, and they will make new friends, learn Gujarati and also garba, people will invite you guys for other activities and everything is set. Your family will be as busy as a bee after the Navratri," another commented.
Another wrote, 'You can join an art workshop. Wabi sabi has a good environment for art and craft activities. They can join the nearest garba classes! They're super fun."
A few days ago, a US influencer took to Instagram, where she revealed that Indian dinner parties frequently include a more laid-back and social gathering before the food is served, in contrast to the US, where meals are usually served as soon as guests arrive.
