Tata Sons Sets Up Dedicated Trust For Air India Crash Victims' Families
Last Updated: Tata Sons established 'The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust' to support Air India AI-171 crash victims, pledging Rs 500 crores for the Trust's initiatives Tata Sons on Friday announced that the group has set up a public charitable trust for the victims of the Air India AI-171 plane crash. In a statement, Tata Sons said it has formalised and completed the registration of a public charitable trust in Mumbai. Tata Sons said that the trust will be called 'The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust' and it will provide both immediate and continuing support to the dependents/next-of-kin of the deceased, to those who were injured, and to all others who are directly or collaterally affected by the accident. The crash in Ahmedabad, India, killed 241 of the 242 people aboard, as well as 19 people on the ground. The Trust will also provide aid and assistance for the alleviation of any trauma or distress suffered by the first responders, medical and disaster relief professionals, social workers and governmental staff who provided invaluable institutional support and service in the aftermath of the accident. 'Tata Sons and Tata Trusts have together pledged to contribute Rs. 500 crores (with both committing Rs. 250 crores each) for the Trust's philanthropic objects, which will include ex-gratia payment of Rs. 1 crore for those deceased, medical treatment of those who suffered serious injuries, and support for rebuilding the B.J. Medical College Hostel infrastructure which was damaged in the accident," read the statement. The Trust will be managed and administered by a 5-member Board of Trustees. The initial two trustees appointed to the Board are: S. Padmanabhan, a former Tata veteran and Sidharth Sharma, Tata Sons' General Counsel. Other trustees will be appointed soon. The Trust will be funded and will commence its work in all earnestness after necessary registration with the Tax authorities and other operational formalities, currently underway, are completed. Air India Says Probe Into Crash Raises Questions The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau report has said the fuel supply to both engines of flight AI171 was cut off within a second of each other, causing confusion in the cockpit and the airplane plummeting back to the ground almost immediately after taking off. The 15-page report also said in the cockpit voice recording, an unidentified pilot asked the other why he had cut off the fuel, which the other denied. Air India Chief Executive Officer Campbell Wilson has said that the preliminary report into the crash of Air India flight AI171 last month has raised more questions. He said that the probe was far from over and it is unwise to jump to any premature conclusions. 'The release of the preliminary report marked the point at which we, along with the world, began receiving additional details about what took place. Unsurprisingly, it provided both greater clarity and opened additional questions," he said in an internal memo to airline staff. He said there were no issues with fuel quality or takeoff roll and that the pilots had passed mandatory pre-fight breathalyser tests. Amid speculation in various quarters about the reasons for the fatal crash that killed 260 people on June 12, the Air India chief said the preliminary report identified no cause nor made any recommendations and urged everyone to avoid drawing premature conclusions as the investigation is far from over. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Saturday released its preliminary report on the crash of Air India's Boeing 787-8 plane. The aircraft, which was operating the flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed into a building soon after takeoff. First interdisciplinary workshop on ‘Geophysical Data Analysis' at Fergusson College
A unique five-day interdisciplinary workshop, 'Lessons and Challenges in Geophysical Data Analysis' was organised by the Department of Mathematics along with the Department of Geology, Fergusson College, Pune from June 23 to 27, which opened opportunities in the evolving landscape of higher education and research. This was the first such interdisciplinary workshop being organised under the title of Geophysics in the country. Fergusson College's Mathematics department alumnus Hamsa Padmanabhan, a physicist and former Principal Investigator of a Swiss National Foundation Ambizione Grant at the University of Geneva, Switzerland has always maintained a strong interest in Geophysics since early childhood. 'I have been particularly interested in the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, the deadliest extinction in Earth's history which took place nearly 252 million years ago and wiped out nearly 96% of marine and 70% of all terrestrial life. Relating this extinction to the current greenhouse effect and global warming scenario promises invaluable lessons for the tackling of our climate crisis,' Padmanabhan told The Indian Express. The physicist along with the faculty of the Mathematics and Geology departments started thinking about how one might build an interdisciplinary initiative to tackle 'down-to-earth' problems by the use of sophisticated statistical and mathematical tools. Gradually, this idea evolved into a conference hosting a truly diverse group of speakers representing geology, mathematics, statistics and economics, and coming from Savitribai Phule Pune University, IMDR Pune, the IISERs Pune and Bhopal, and the newly founded Green Concept institute. Set up by Rohan Shetti, Aboli Kulkarni and Girish Kulkarni, the Green Concept is an organisation based in Pune and Berlin, comprising environmental scientists, ecologists, botanists and data scientists—-that specialises in applied ecology, carbon assessments and ecosystem restoration. 'Several sessions were held during the workshop which highlighted how different disciplines intersect and contribute to addressing complex societal challenges across various domains. It promotes an environment where students learn to think critically, adaptively and collaboratively,' Padmanabhan said.

Pregnant Woman, Her Father Killed In Collision With Car Driven By Drunk Driver
Chennai: A family's moments of happiness turned into heartbreak when a head-on collision involving a drunk driver claimed the lives of a seven-months pregnant woman, her unborn baby and her father near Chennai early on Tuesday morning. The accident occurred on the Maduravoyal-Tambaram Bypass near Anakaputhur. The dead have been identified as Deepika (23), her unborn baby and her father Padmanabhan (60), both natives of Madurai district. Deepika had been living in Kotturpuram, Chennai, with her husband for the past two years. The family had gathered in the city for Deepika's traditional baby shower just days earlier. Following the ceremony, Deepika's parents had planned to take her back to Madurai for her upcoming delivery. On Monday evening, they attended the birthday party of a relative's child in Chennai and stayed overnight. The family set out for Madurai early on Tuesday morning by car. Around dawn, as their vehicle proceeded along the Maduravoyal Bypass, tragedy struck. A car exiting a nearby petrol station reportedly entered the wrong lane at high speed and collided head-on with their vehicle. The impact was devastating, killing Deepika and Padmanabhan instantly. Deepika, who was in her final trimester, could not be revived and the unborn baby died in the mother's womb. Deepika's mother, who was also in the car, sustained critical head injuries and was rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai. The driver of their car was injured and is undergoing treatment at the Chromepet Government Hospital. The Chromepet Traffic Investigation Police were quick to reach the scene and launched an enquiry. Initial findings revealed that the driver of the oncoming vehicle, identified as Manikandan, was under the influence of alcohol. He had been speeding and driving against the flow of traffic. Manikandan was arrested at the scene, and a case has been registered under relevant Sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those pertaining to rash and negligent driving causing death. Police confirmed that his reckless actions led directly to the fatal crash. The bodies of Deepika and Padmanabhan were sent to the Chromepet Government Hospital for autopsy. The tragic accident has triggered widespread outrage, with calls for stricter enforcement of laws against drunk driving and reckless road behaviour.
