Annual float festival ‘Theppotsavam' organised at Sri Padmavathi temple tank at Tiruchanur

The 'Padma Pushkarini' or 'Padma Sarovaram', the temple tank attached to Tiruchanur Sri Padmavati Ammavari temple, came alive with resplendent flowers and serial lighting of various hues for the annual float festival 'Theppotsavam'. It is during this part of the year that the festival is observed in the tank, which is also meant to be a divine outing for the Goddess to beat the summer heat. As part of the morning itinerary, the processional deity is given a celestial bath using milk, yogurt, honey, sandal paste and other aromatic substances. In the evening, the deity is brought in a colourful procession around the temple to the tank for the grand event. Mythology has it that it was in this very 'Padma Sarovaram' that the Goddess appeared in a golden lotus and hence the little village is identified with anything related to Padmavati. Devotees who had gathered around the tank and seated on the steps leading to the water body had an eyeful of the dazzling deity taken out on the thoroughly-illuminated flotilla.
