Shamrock Rovers seize chance to claim win away to Waterford

Waterford FC 1 Shamrock Rovers 3 Adrian Flanagan reports from the RSC SHAMROCK ROVERS WERE handed three points on a plate by a battling Waterford FC side as Stephen Bradley's side capitalised on two huge errors that gave the league leaders all three points from this SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division clash at the RSC. After a brilliant Padraig Amond header had put the hosts in front inside ten minutes, the home side were the cause of their own downfall as they were undone by goals from Rory Gaffney, Michael Noonan, and Graham Burke – the latter two goals were defensive errors It was a header of quality that gave the hosts the lead on ten minutes. Ryan Burke found space for himself out on the left before putting in a wonderful ball that saw Padraig Amond get in front of his marker to flick an unstoppable header to the roof of the net from 12 yards. Ken Sutton / INPHO Ken Sutton / INPHO / INPHO Stephen McMullan denied the Hoops a certain equalising goal on 23 minutes when Josh Honohan played a super ball over the top that sent Aaron Greene clear straight on goal, but the netminder saved at the feet of the attacker as he tried to take the ball around him. Rovers were celebrating a leveller just two minutes later. Adam Matthews played a long throw into the right-hand corner that saw Greene send in a first-time cross for Rory Gaffney, and he applied a neat right-footed finish past the helpless McMullan. It took some more heroic goalkeeping from McMullan to deny the visitors the lead goal on 36 minutes when Jack Byrne swung over a right-wing cross that picked out the run of Josh Honohan, and after his header was superbly kept out, Rory Gaffney struck the outside of the post with the rebound. Rovers were gifted the lead on 76 minutes. Blues keeper Stephen McMullan, who was having a top display for the hosts up to his point, played a clearance straight to Michael Noonan, who was only on the field seven minutes, and with his first touch, he couldn't believe his luck as he guided the ball to an empty net from outside the penalty area. A third goal followed for the tabletoppers deep into second-half injury-time when Josh Honohan, on the week that he was called up to the Ireland senior squad, dispossessed Navajo Bakboord before releasing Graham Burke, who beat the offside trap, to finish past McMullan. Waterford FC: McMullan; Horton, Radkowski (Bakbooard 60), Leahy, Burke; Olayinka (Pouwels 90), McMenamy (McDonald 60), White, Glenfield; Lonergan, Amond. Leahy header sees Waterford beat Galway to extend winning run

Waterford FC 1 Galway United 0 Adrian Flanagan reports from The RSC. WATERFORD FC'S INCREDIBLE run of form in the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division continued as John Coleman's first game as manager received a standing ovation as his side stretched their winning run to four games with a 1-0 win over Galway United at a rocking RSC. Advertisement Coleman was celebrating his first goal as new Waterford boss on 27 minutes. Conan Noonan's left-wing corner hit defender Darragh Leahy, and his flicked header found the far corner of Brendan Clarke's net. Less than a minute after coming on as a half-time substitute, Ed McCarthy went close to levelling the tie, reacting quickest to a knockdown from Moses Dyer inside the six-yard box, but his first-time shot was straight down the throat of keeper Stephen McMullan. It took a tremendous save from Galway's Brendan Clarke to deny the home side a second goal on 53 minutes when Padraig Amond latched onto a brilliant through ball from Grant Horton, but his first-time shot was superbly saved by the netminder. Waterford's Padraig Amond and Galway's Patrick Hickey. Ken Sutton / INPHO Ken Sutton / INPHO / INPHO Clarke pulled off an incredible save to keep his side in the game on 75 minutes. James Olayinka won possession in a tackle that saw the ball fall nicely for Tommy Lonergan, but his stunning strike that looked destined for the top corner was superbly turned around the posts. Skipper Padraig Amond beat the offside trap down the right to race onto a Ryan Burke ball out of defence before crossing to the back post for Conan Noonan, but his left-footed strike was superbly saved, with Kyle White clearing the crossbar with the rebound. It was the turn of Stephen McMullan to produce a stunning stop to deny Galway an unlikely goal two minutes later when David Hurley sent in a dangerous free-kick that was met by Patrick Hickey, but somehow the Blues' netminder kept his effort out to the shock of the 1,937 crowd. Tommy Lonergan had a chance to put the game beyond any doubt two minutes into added time when a neat move involving Noonan and Amond saw the latter put the ball on the plate for the former, but somehow he fired wide in front of an open goal from close-range after he had started the move. WATERFORD FC: McMullan; Horton, Radkowski, Leahy, Burke; White, Glenfield, Olayinka, Noonan; Lonergan, Amond. GALWAY UNITED: Clarke; Byrne, Slevin, Brouder, Donelon (Horgan 63); Esua, Hurley, McCormack (Kerrigan 63), Hickey; Dyer (Walsh 76), Tollett (McCarthy 46). Referee: Paul Norton (Dublin).

Derry City beaten by Waterford despite Boyce goal

Derry City fell to a 2-1 defeat in the Premier Division away to Waterford at the RSC. Darragh Leahy bundled home the opener minutes before the break to send the hosts in 1-0 ahead at half-time. The host's talisman Padraig Amond doubled their lead just past the hour. City replied late on through Liam Boyce, but Tiernan Lynch's side stay sixth in the table as their two-game winning run ground to a halt. The Candystripes side were also beaten 2-1 when these sides met at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium back in February but both teams have been in contrasting form since. Waterford came into tonight's game off the back of seven straight defeats in a run that cost manager Kevin Long his job and saw the Blues plummet into the relegation play-off place. The Foylesiders, meanwhile, had lost just two of their eight fixtures since that February encounter. Michael Duffy almost set them on their way to a third consecutive victory getting on the end of a Dom Thomas pullback on 14 minutes. Last ditch defending was needed to prevent Waterford's Ryan Burke from opening the scoring moments later with his header cleared off the line. The breakthrough did come shortly before the break as City failed to clear their lines and Leahy forced the ball into the net. The home side had lost four of their five matches at the Regional Sports Centre prior to entertaining Derry but they took full control of the contest just after the hour when Amond's effort, aided by a deflection, flew past Brian Maher. Sean Patton went close to reducing City's arrears on 81 minutes before Boyce eventually grabbed a consolation deep into stoppage time. Next for Derry is a double header at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium, first hosting Shelbourne next Friday before welcoming St. Patrick's to Foyleside three days later.
