Four nabbed, excavator and 'lori hantu' seized in Pahang illegal earth-moving raid
PEKAN: Enforcement officers conducting surveillance along Jalan Kuantan-Segamat near Paloh Hinai today uncovered illegal earth-moving activities after deploying a drone for an aerial view of the area. The Pahang Enforcement Unit's (UPNP) elite team arrested four men, including an Indonesian national, and seized an excavator along with two lori hantu (unlicensed lorries) at the site. UPNP elite team head Saifullah Muhammad Ali said 11 enforcement officers were deployed to the Jalan Kuantan-Segamat stretch for routine monitoring and surveillance at around 9am. "About 10.15am, the drone operator spotted earth being dug and moved at a site in Paloh Hinai. An excavator and two tipper lorries were seen operating at the location. "Roughly 15 minutes later, the enforcement team arrived at the site. They ordered the Indonesian national who was operating the excavator, along with the two tipper lorry drivers, to cease their activities for inspection," he told the Pahang Media news portal. Saifullah said a fourth suspect arrived at the site around 11.30am, claiming to be in charge of the operations, but failed to produce any documentation or approvals related to the activities. He said the four men were detained and are being investigated for the unlawful extraction or removal of rock minerals or sand. They were taken to the Pekan police headquarters for further questioning.

Thousands of trees cleared in Op Sekat 3.0 crackdown on illegal durian farms
RAUB: Thousands of trees over an area measuring 202.34 hectares were cleared when the authorities carried out the Op Sekat 3.0 crackdown on the illegal durian farms on state-controlled land here last month. Pahang Enforcement Unit (UPNP) elite team head, Saifullah Muhammad Ali, said most of the illegal farmers were not present at their plantations while only their workers, mostly foreigners, occupied the huts at the farms. "UPNP proposes that all the huts be destroyed and all farming equipment in government land and forest reserves to be seized, especially in areas where no decisions have been made yet. "Majority of the illegal farmers never paid taxes because they do not have legal land ownership. "They have reaped profits from illegally grown durians for a long time so we suggest the Inland Revenue Board to conduct detailed investigations on all the farmers," he said when briefing the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah here today. The briefing today was on the recent Op Sekat 3.0 enforcement operation against illegal durian farmers at Batu 3 Jalan Sungai Ruan-Sungai Klau here today. Also present was the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, Pahang State Secretary Datuk Nazri Abu Bakar and Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman. Meanwhile, Saifullah said that due to the vast size of the encroached land, they have proposed to use real-time satellite imaging services to conduct monitoring. "The illegal farms are too huge to be physically patrolled so we propose real-time satellite imaging services through subscriptions," he said. The Op Sekat special operation

Pahang ruler concerned over land clearing activities in Cameron Highlands
RAUB: The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, has likened the rampant land encroachment in Cameron Highlands to the Malay proverb "nasi sudah menjadi bubur" (the rice has become broth). He said that despite carrying out Op Gading, an operation to combat illegal land encroachment in the highlands, unlicensed land clearing and occupation continue to occur. "One district I am particularly concerned about is Cameron Highlands. I am saddened to see the hilly areas being cleared indiscriminately, and this must be stopped. "From my observations during a helicopter flight over Bertam Valley, I no longer saw lush green forests. "Instead, the landscape is now covered with what I call a 'plastic forest' (plastic-covered structures used for farming)... it has turned into a 'plastic jungle' in Bertam Valley. 'Nasi sudah menjadi bubur'(the damage may already be irreversible). Perhaps the Pahang government can explore new methods and implement them in Cameron Highlands," he SAID. The ruler was speaking to reporters after attending a briefing on the recent Op Sekat 3.0 enforcement operation at Batu 3, Jalan Sungai Ruan–Sungai Klau, today. Also present were Tengku Mahkota Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, State Secretary Datuk Nazri Abu Bakar, Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman and Pahang Enforcement Unit elite team head Saifullah Muhammad Ali. Al-Sultan Abdullah said land clearing activities must be stopped immediately. Launched in 2018, Op Gading was part of the government's effort to curb illegal encroachment while supporting flood mitigation and river-cleaning initiatives, aimed at preventing mud floods and landslides.

Sultan of Pahang shocked by 10,521ha land encroachment in Raub
RAUB: The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, expressed shock upon learning that approximately 10,521ha of land in Raub had been illegally encroached. The ruler was astonished by the vast scale of the encroachment, which is equivalent to approximately 14,700 football fields. "I was surprised during the briefing by the UPNP (Pahang Enforcement Unit elite team), as around 26,000 acres of land have been encroached upon for decades in Raub. "This encroachment must be stopped through the most effective methods. "If this is allowed to continue, it would appear as though there is no enforcement from the Forestry Department, District and Land Office, or the Menteri Besar's Office. "Those planning to apply for government land must go through the proper channels and procedures," he told reporters after attending a briefing on the recent Op Sekat 3.0 enforcement operation at Batu 3, Jalan Sungai Ruan–Sungai Klau today.

60 nabbed in Pahang for land encroachment since August last year
KUANTAN: Sixty individuals, including foreigners, were detained during integrated operations against land encroachment across Pahang since August last year. The suspects were apprehended during joint operations conducted with the Pahang Enforcement Unit (UPNP) elite team, the Forestry Department, and other agencies throughout the state. Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said 59 investigation papers had been opened during the operation, including cases involving obstruction of civil servants from carrying out their duties. "Since August last year, a total of 105 vehicles, including motorcycles, pick-up trucks and lorries, have been seized during the enforcement operations. "The authorities have also confiscated 622 units of farming equipment, including grass cutters and pesticide sprayers," he told reporters at the police logistics complex in Alor Akar today. Earlier, Yahaya met with some 145 scrap traders from across Pahang during a high-profile policing programme aimed at raising awareness about the possession and sale of stolen telecommunications cables or equipment. Meanwhile, Yahaya said that despite the statewide enforcement efforts, certain parties were still attempting to encroach on government land. "On April 30, five men, including four foreigners, were detained for encroaching into a forest reserve in Raub. They were handed over to the district forestry office and have been remanded until May 4. "Joint enforcement operations against land encroachment will be carried out across all 11 districts, not only in Raub. Those found trespassing into forest reserves or government land will face legal action, so it is best to refrain from committing such offences," he said. On April 24, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail announced that the state government had launched a crackdown on land encroachment throughout Pahang, classifying it as a criminal offence. On April 30, Raub police arrested five men, including four Indonesian nationals, for allegedly encroaching into the Batu Talam Forest Reserve at about 5pm. Meanwhile, on a separate matter, Yahaya said cable theft cases in Pahang had risen from 211 cases in 2022 to 414 cases in 2023. He added that 100 individuals were arrested last year, compared to only 31 the year before. "We have observed a significant increase in cases, which prompted police to engage with scrap traders to raise awareness and ensure they do not purchase stolen copper cables. Traders must verify their sources and avoid dealing with individuals involved in cable theft," he said.
