NADRA upgrades non-chip CNIC with new smart features

The update aims to provide citizens with digital features, that were earlier limited to chip-based identity cards, while maintaining a lower cost than the SMART NICs. Other updates includes: Bilingual Information: Details on the card are provided in both English and Urdu for consistency with passports and official documents. QR Code Integration: The card includes a QR code, enabling users to access their digital identity via the Pak ID mobile app. In comparison a chip-based CNIC holds relevant data of the holder, while could be used for various purposes, without an internet connection. Special Benefits for Organ Donors: Registered organ donors will have a unique symbol on their card and enjoy lifetime validity. Exclusive Features for Persons with Disabilities: Cards for individuals with disabilities include distinct markers and lifetime validity. The new card is available for renewal, data modification, or replacement in case of loss. The pricing for the upgraded non-chip ID is as follows: Normal: Rs400 (31-day delivery) Urgent: Rs1,150 (15-day delivery) Executive: Rs2,150 (9-day delivery) First-time applicants aged 18: Free (normal category) Separately, NADRA also revised the Smart CNIC fee structure for 2025. New Smart CNICs now cost Rs750 for normal, Rs1,500 for urgent, and Rs2,500 for executive processing. These updates are part of NADRA's ongoing efforts to modernise national ID systems and support digital governance in Pakistan.

NADRA revises age guidelines for NICOP holders

The updated rules allow applicants to request changes through the Pak ID mobile app, at NADRA offices, or via Pakistani embassies abroad. Eligibility and Documentation The eligibility for age changes depends on the degree of modification and supporting documents: Up to five years (first time only) — Requires a Pakistani passport, matriculation certificate, recent mark sheet, or service book. Second-time changes (up to 366 days) — Needs a Pakistani or foreign passport, resident permit, or matric certificate. Age changes based on birth certificates — Permitted up to one year using inland or foreign birth records. Unnatural sibling age difference (under seven months) — Up to one year change allowed without documents. Fee Structure NADRA has set varying fees based on the requested age difference: Up to 1 year: USD 5 1 to 2 years: USD 25 2 to 3 years: USD 40 Over 3 years: USD 65 Second modification attempt: USD 125 NADRA stated that the process ensures transparency and accessibility for overseas applicants. Earlier Notice Previously, NADRA clarified that birth, death, and marriage registrations are governed by provincial laws and handled by Union Councils.

NADRA rolls out new digital security feature for overseas Pakistanis
Pakistan's National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced biometric verification to its Pak ID mobile app, aiming to bolster security for overseas Pakistanis, particularly those living in the United Arab Emirates. The app, which allows users to apply for a range of identity documents, including the Smart National ID Card for Overseas Pakistanis, will now require biometric verification when logging in from a new device, NADRA said in a statement. 'This new security feature is designed to protect citizens' information and prevent unauthorised access, identity theft, and misuse of Pak ID accounts,' the authority added. The Pak ID app streamlines the application and renewal process for identity documents, enabling Pakistanis at home and abroad to manage their ID-related tasks directly from their smartphones, without needing to visit NADRA service centres. NADRA said the added layer of biometric authentication will help safeguard sensitive data, offering users more secure access to its digital ID services.

The system will soon incorporate digital verification processes to further enhance the authentication of services. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi highlighted the extensive reach of NADRA's identity services, ensuring accessibility even in Pakistan's remotest regions and for overseas Pakistanis. He also acknowledged NADRA's role in supporting governance, law enforcement, and national security efforts. Digital identity card marks a significant step in the country's digital future, aiming to streamline services and improve security for millions of citizens, Naqvi added. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised NADRA's efforts to empower citizens and foster economic growth through data integration and artificial intelligence. He emphasised that these digital solutions are crucial in promoting inclusivity and driving Pakistan's economic development.

Dematerialised digital identity card launched
NADRA has announced the launch of Pakistan's first "dematerialised digital identity card" during its Silver Jubilee ceremony on Monday. In his message, Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control, Mohsin Raza Naqvi, termed the launch of Pakistan's first dematerialised digital identity card as a significant step toward digital identity transformation. He announced that after integrating this feature into the Pak ID mobile app, citizens will be able to store their identity cards on their smartphones. Additionally, a digital verification system will be introduced soon, facilitating secure and instant verification for various services under the World Bank-backed Digital Economy Project.
